Amused

Chapter 9: The Last Person I Expected

I don’t remember leaving my father’s house.

I don’t remember getting into my truck.

I only remember one thing.

My daughter.

A picture of Emily standing beside Thomas.

Alive.

Terrified.

And alone.

“Call the police,” I said.

Ethan was already dialing.

“He has her.””

My hands gripped the steering wheel.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

“He won’t.””

Ethan looked at me.

“What?””

I stared at the road.

“He wants me angry.””

The pattern was clear now.

Every message.

Every secret.

Every moment of chaos.

Thomas wanted me to react.

He wanted me to make mistakes.

But he didn’t understand one thing.

I wasn’t the same man who ignored the signs anymore.

I was Emily’s father.

And I would do anything to bring her home.

The police tracked the photo.

The location data led us to an abandoned warehouse outside town.

The same place where old construction equipment was stored.

The drive there felt like the longest drive of my life.

When we arrived, officers surrounded the building.

I stood behind the line.

Waiting.

Unable to breathe.

Then I heard it.

A small voice.

“Daddy?””

My entire body moved before my brain did.

“Emily!””

The officers rushed inside.

Seconds later, they brought her out.

She ran straight into my arms.

I held her so tightly she complained.

“Daddy, too tight.””

I immediately loosened my grip.

“I’m sorry.””

She buried her face against me.

“I knew you’d come.””

Those words broke me.

Because she shouldn’t have had to wonder.

A few minutes later, Thomas was brought outside.

He looked nothing like the confident man who used to smile at family dinners.

He looked empty.

Angry.

Broken.

He stared at me.

“You still don’t understand.””

I stepped forward.

“You kidnapped my daughter.””

“I saved her.””

My face hardened.

“From what?””

“From all of you.””

The officers held him back.

Thomas laughed.

“Rachel was weak.””

I froze.

“She wanted someone to blame.””

“Shut up.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“She hated herself.””

I stared.

“And you used that.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“You admit it?””

“I gave her what she wanted.””

“What?””

“A reason.””

My hands curled into fists.

“A reason to believe everyone was against her.””

Thomas smiled slightly.

“She was already halfway there.””

I hated that part.

Because it was true.

Rachel had made choices.

But Thomas had pushed her toward the worst ones.

“Why Emily?””

His expression changed.

“Because you loved her.””

The answer was simple.

Cruel.

“You took the thing I cared about most.””

Thomas looked away.

“You took mine.””

I understood then.

This was never about justice.

It was about pain.

He wanted me to hurt the way he hurt.

Later that night, after Emily was examined and cleared, I sat beside her hospital bed.

She was sleeping.

Finally.

Peacefully.

The police had enough evidence.

Thomas would be charged.

Rachel would face consequences for what she did.

And my family would never be the same.

But there was still one thing I needed to understand.

Why did Rachel hide the truth?

Why did she protect Thomas?

The answer came the next morning.

When Rachel asked to speak with me.

She looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just broken.

“I’m sorry.””

I sat across from her.

“I need the truth.””

She nodded.

“I knew Thomas was involved.””

My heart sank.

“When?””

“Before the patio incident.””

I looked away.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She started crying.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Of what?””

She wiped her face.

“Because he knew things about me.””

“What things?””

Rachel swallowed.

“He knew I was struggling.””

“That’s not a crime.””

“No.””

She looked down.

“He knew I had thoughts I was scared of.””

I frowned.

“What thoughts?””

She whispered:

“That maybe Emily deserved a better mother.””

The words hurt.

But I listened.

“He convinced me those thoughts made me a bad person.””

She shook her head.

“He made me believe I was dangerous.””

I stayed silent.

“Then he started telling me you would leave me.””

Rachel looked up.

“He said if you knew how overwhelmed I was, you’d take Emily away.””

My chest tightened.

“So you trusted him.””

“I was scared.””

She covered her face.

“I didn’t know what was real anymore.””

For the first time, I saw the full picture.

Rachel had been manipulated.

But she had also failed our daughter.

Both things were true.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“There’s one thing Thomas never knew.””

I waited.

“The night Emily got hurt…”

Rachel looked terrified.

“He wasn’t the one who told me to use the hose.””

I froze.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“He wanted me to scare her.””

“Then who?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.””

My heart started pounding.

“Rachel.””

She looked toward the door.

“Because before Thomas came into my life…”

She whispered:

“Someone else had already been teaching me how to punish Emily.””

I stood.

“Who?””

Rachel looked at me.

And the answer made no sense.

Because it was the last person I ever expected.

“The person who raised me.””

May you like

She swallowed.

“My mother.””
