Chapter 8: The Truth My Family Buried
The drive to my father’s house felt endless.
Every red light.
Every car in front of me.
Every second.
It all felt like something was standing between me and the truth.
When I arrived, police cars filled the driveway.
The same driveway where I learned to drive.
The same driveway where Ethan and I played football as kids.
The same driveway where my father used to tell us:
“Family protects family.””
Now it looked like a crime scene.
An officer stopped me.
“Mr. Carter.””
“What happened?””
“Your father is alive.””
I exhaled.
“Where is he?””
“Inside. Paramedics are treating him.””
“And Ethan?””
The officer’s expression changed.
“He’s inside too.””
“Is he under arrest?””
“Not yet.””
Not yet.
Those words stayed with me.
I walked inside.
My childhood home suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Photos still hung on the walls.
Birthday pictures.
Family vacations.
Christmas mornings.
A lifetime of memories.
But now I wondered how much of that lifetime had been built on secrets.
I found my father sitting on the couch.
A bandage wrapped around his forehead.
He looked older.
Much older.
When he saw me, his eyes filled with regret.
“Daniel.””
I walked closer.
“What happened?””
He looked away.
“Ethan came here.””
“Why?””
“He wanted answers.””
I looked toward the kitchen.
Ethan was standing there with an officer.
His face was pale.
“What happened between you two?””
Ethan stepped forward.
“I didn’t hurt him.””
My father looked at him.
“You followed me.””
“I followed you because you lied.””
The officer raised a hand.
“Everyone needs to calm down.””
I looked at my father.
“Tell me the truth.””
He closed his eyes.
“I made mistakes.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked at me.
“I knew Rachel was struggling.””
“With what?””
“With pressure.””
I waited.
He continued.
“She was being manipulated.””
“By who?””
My father’s face changed.
Like he hated saying the name.
“Thomas.””
I froze.
Rachel’s coworker.
The man with the black watch.
The man who had been inside our house.
“What does Thomas have to do with this?””
My father looked at Ethan.
Then back at me.
“He targeted Rachel.””
“Why?””
“Because she was vulnerable.””
I felt anger rising.
“Explain.””
My father leaned forward.
“Thomas knew Rachel felt like she was failing as a mother.””
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“He convinced her that everyone was judging her.””
My jaw tightened.
“And you knew?””
“I suspected.””
“Dad.””
“I was trying to collect evidence.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice broke.
“Everyone was collecting evidence while my daughter was living through it.””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could argue.
My father looked down.
“I’m sorry.””
I wanted to accept that apology.
But I couldn’t.
Not yet.
“Where is Thomas now?””
No one answered.
That was the answer.
The officer stepped forward.
“We have been looking for him.””
“Why?””
“Because he disappeared.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
The officer continued.
“His apartment is empty.””
I looked at Ethan.
“Why would he run?””
Ethan’s face changed.
“Because he knows we found out.””
“Found out what?””
Ethan looked at my father.
Then at me.
“The reason he wanted Rachel to destroy her marriage.””
I waited.
Ethan swallowed.
“Thomas wasn’t trying to help Rachel.””
“Then what was he doing?””
My father answered.
“He wanted control.””
The room went silent.
“He wanted Daniel to lose everyone.””
I stared.
“Why?””
My father looked at me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Because Thomas blamed you.””
“For what?””
My father’s voice dropped.
“His sister.””
I frowned.
“I don’t know his sister.””
“Yes, you do.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My father looked at me.
“You met her eight years ago.””
The memory hit slowly.
A hospital.
A woman crying.
A lawsuit.
A mistake.
My blood turned cold.
“Wait.””
My father nodded.
“Her name was Laura.””
I stopped breathing.
Because Laura wasn’t a stranger.
She was my old coworker.
The woman whose accident I testified about years ago.
The accident that ruined her life.
The accident I always believed wasn’t my fault.
But Thomas believed it was.
And now he had spent months destroying my family for revenge.
Then Ethan’s phone buzzed.
He looked down.
His face changed.
“What?””
He handed me the phone.
A message.
From Thomas.
Only one sentence.
You finally understand what losing everything feels like.
Then another message arrived.
A photo.
My heart stopped.
It was Emily.
May you like
Standing outside our house.
And Thomas was behind her.
