Amused

Chapter 8: The Brother Hidden From Everyone

I couldn’t move.

Not because I was afraid.

Because my mind refused to accept what I had just heard.

The person standing outside my apartment was Marcus Reed.

The man who had blackmailed me.

The man who had helped me uncover the truth.

The man who had spent the last few days telling me his brother was innocent.

And now he was saying the impossible.

*Noah isn’t your brother.*

*He’s mine.*

I stared at the door.

“Say that again.””

Silence.

Then Reed’s voice came through.

“He’s my brother.””

My hand tightened around my weapon.

“Noah Brooks.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did my father’s video tell me to find him?””

A pause.

“Because your father knew.””

The answer made my stomach drop.

“Knew what?””

“That Noah was alive.””

The hallway light flickered beneath the door.

I could see his shadow.

Standing there.

Waiting.

“You have ten seconds to explain why I shouldn’t arrest you.””

His voice softened.

“Tiana.””

“Ten.””

“I know this sounds impossible.””

“Nine.””

“But you need to hear me.””

“Eight.””

“Your father wasn’t your only family member who disappeared that night.””

“Seven.””

“You think you lost a brother.””

“Six.””

“But I lost one too.””

“Five.””

The anger inside me burned.

“You’re telling me you knew this entire time?””

“Four.””

“Yes.””

“Three.””

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

“Two.””

“Tiana—”

“One.””

I opened the door.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I needed answers.

Reed stood outside with his hands visible.

No weapon.

No badge.

Just exhaustion.

He looked like a man who hadn’t slept in days.

“Come in,” I said.

He stepped inside slowly.

I locked the door behind him.

The apartment was dark except for the flashlight on my phone.

The flash drive sat on the table.

Reed looked at it.

“You opened it.””

“Yes.””

“What did you see?””

“My father.””

His expression changed.

A strange mixture of pain and relief.

“He finally left you something.””

I stared at him.

“You knew about the video?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because I helped him make it.””

The silence that followed was unbearable.

I looked at him.

“You were there?””

Reed nodded.

“Not the night he died.””

“Then when?””

He sat down.

“Three days before.””

I felt my anger rising again.

“You keep finding new ways to surprise me.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t know what it feels like to discover your entire life was built on secrets.””

Reed looked down.

“You’re right.””

The simple answer caught me off guard.

“I don’t.””

He looked at the photograph on the table.

The one showing Noah.

“My life was built on secrets too.””

I crossed my arms.

“Start talking.””

Reed took a slow breath.

“Your father and my father worked together.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Before I became a detective, before you became an officer, our families were connected.””

“How?””

“Your father was investigating Derek Vale.””

I nodded.

“You already told me that.””

“No.””

Reed looked at me.

“He wasn’t investigating alone.””

The room went quiet.

“He worked with my father.””

I stared at him.

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

“Who was your father?””

Reed hesitated.

Then:

“Officer Daniel Reed.””

The name meant nothing.

Until I saw his face.

The same name hidden in the old reports.

The same name attached to a witness statement.

“The second file.””

Reed nodded.

“You found it.””

I felt cold.

“Your father was involved too.””

“Yes.””

“How do you know?””

“Because he left me the same thing your father left you.””

He pulled out a small envelope.

Different from Ward’s.

Different from the one my father had hidden.

But the same kind of paper.

The same handwriting.

My father’s handwriting.

I stared.

“Why does my father have messages for you?””

“Because he trusted my father.””

I looked at him.

“And you?””

Reed gave a sad smile.

“He trusted me too.””

That answer hurt.

Because I didn’t know if I believed it.

“Then explain Noah.””

Reed looked at the photograph.

“When Derek Vale discovered your father was investigating him, he started looking for everyone connected to the case.””

“Your family.””

“Yes.””

“And Noah?””

Reed nodded.

“Noah was a child.””

“So was I.””

“Yes.””

I waited.

Reed continued.

“Your father had information that could destroy Vale. But he knew keeping it with him would get people killed.””

“The flash drive.””

“Yes.””

“He hid it.””

“Yes.””

“Inside my necklace.””

Reed nodded.

“But there was another problem.””

“What?””

“The person who knew where it was.””

I felt a chill.

“Me.””

“Yes.””

“And Noah?””

Reed looked at me.

“Your father realized Vale would come after anyone connected to him.””

“So he separated us.””

“Exactly.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Reed watched me.

“He made everyone believe Noah was gone.””

“Why?””

“Because Noah knew something.””

“What?””

Reed’s face became serious.

“He saw who killed your father.””

The room went silent.

I felt sick.

“You’re saying Noah was a witness?””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide him?””

“Because the killer knew.””

I looked toward the window.

The dark street outside.

The feeling of being watched.

“Who raised him?””

Reed looked away.

“That’s the part I never understood.””

“What do you mean?””

“My father disappeared after helping your father.””

“And Noah?””

“Someone took him.””

“Who?””

Reed looked at me.

“The same person who changed Caleb’s file.””

My heart stopped.

“Derek Vale.””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“Not Vale.””

“Then who?””

Reed opened the envelope.

Inside was a single document.

He placed it on the table.

I read the first line.

My blood went cold.

PERSON OF INTEREST: ELIAS WARD.

I looked up.

“No.””

Reed didn’t speak.

“You think Ward took Noah?””

“I think Ward knows where Noah went.””

“You told me he was afraid.””

“He is.””

“Then why?””

“Because fear doesn’t mean innocence.””

The words hurt because they sounded like something I had said before.

I picked up the paper.

“What is this?””

“A record my father kept.””

“Why didn’t you show me before?””

“Because I wasn’t sure.””

“About what?””

“About who to trust.””

The answer was honest.

And somehow that made it worse.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

Both of us froze.

Unknown number.

A picture appeared.

My breath stopped.

It was a recent photo.

Taken outside my apartment.

Reed and me.

Together.

The message underneath:

*YOU FOUND EACH OTHER TOO LATE.*

Then another message appeared.

*NOAH IS ALREADY HERE.*

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Reed stood immediately.

“Where is your bedroom?””

I stared.

“What?””

“Where?””

“Why?””

“Because if Noah is here—”

A sound interrupted him.

A floorboard.

From the hallway.

Inside my apartment.

Neither of us moved.

Slowly, Reed reached for his weapon.

I did the same.

The apartment was silent.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

A young voice.

Shaking.

Scared.

“I’m not here to hurt you.””

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that voice.

Not because I had heard it before.

Because I had heard it in my dreams.

A voice that sounded like my father.

A voice that carried something familiar.

Reed whispered:

“Noah.””

The figure stepped into the light.

A young man.

Around twenty-five.

Holding an old photograph.

His eyes moved to me.

Then to the necklace around my neck.

And his expression broke.

“I thought I would never find you.””

I couldn’t speak.

The stranger looked at Reed.

Then back at me.

“My whole life, I was told you were dead.””

My breath caught.

“Who are you?””

His eyes filled with tears.

And then he answered.

“I’m Noah.””

A pause.

“But I’m not your brother.””

I froze.

He looked at Reed.

“I’m his.””

The room went silent.

Because suddenly the impossible became real.

There were two brothers.

Two families.

Two secrets.

And everyone had been lying.

Noah stepped closer.

“The person who killed your father…”

His voice trembled.

“He wasn’t trying to hide the flash drive.””

I stared at him.

“What was he trying to hide?””

Noah looked directly at me.

“The fact that your father discovered who I really was.””

I felt the world tilt.

“Who are you?””

Noah looked down.

Then whispered:

“The boy everyone thought died that night…”

He lifted his eyes.

“Was never me.””

And behind him, a shadow moved near the doorway.

Someone else was inside.

Someone who had followed him.

Someone who had been listening.

Then a familiar voice spoke.

“Finally.””

We all turned.

Captain Elias Ward stood in the doorway.

And he said the one sentence none of us expected.

“Now that all three of you are together…”

May you like

His eyes locked onto me.

“I can finally tell you what your father did.””
