Chapter 8: The Sister Who Came Back
For five years, I had imagined the moment I would see Emily again.
I imagined a phone call.
A knock at the door.
A stranger recognizing her somewhere and telling me she was alive.
I imagined running toward her.
I imagined holding her so tightly that neither of us would ever disappear again.
I never imagined this.
Not in my worst nightmare.
My sister stood at the top of the basement stairs beside my husband.
Alive.
Calm.
Looking at me like I was the stranger.
“No,” I whispered.
My voice barely existed.
“No.””
Emily’s face tightened.
“Leah…”
I stepped back.
My son stirred against my chest.
The small movement reminded me that I wasn’t just a sister anymore.
I was a mother.
And I had to think.
I had to protect him.
“What are you doing here?””
Emily looked at Nathan.
That tiny movement destroyed something inside me.
Because she looked at him before answering me.
Like she needed permission.
Like she was still trapped.
Nathan walked down one step.
“Leah, please.””
I almost laughed.
Please.
That word again.
The word he used when he wanted to sound gentle.
The word that came before every threat.
Claire moved beside me.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Nathan looked at her.
His expression changed.
Not surprise.
Anger.
“You should have stayed away.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“I thought you would say that.””
Emily looked between us.
“Claire…”
The sound of her voice made my heart stop.
She knew her.
Of course she knew her.
Everyone knew more than I did.
Everyone had pieces of my life that I never received.
I looked at Emily.
“You’re alive.””
She swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Why did you let me believe you were dead?””
Her eyes filled.
“I didn’t.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“I never told anyone I was dead.””
Nathan interrupted.
“She disappeared.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
The word surprised even me.
Because for the first time, I wasn’t asking.
I was accusing.
“No, you told people she disappeared.””
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
Emily looked down.
And that was all the confirmation I needed.
My husband had lied.
Again.
I stepped closer.
“Emily.””
She looked at me.
“Tell me why.””
A long silence followed.
Then she said:
“Because I was trying to keep you safe.””
The answer should have comforted me.
Instead, it hurt.
“Safe?””
I looked around the basement.
“At the same time you were standing next to him?””
Emily closed her eyes.
“I know how it looks.””
“It looks like you helped him.””
“I didn’t.””
Nathan sighed.
“Leah, you’re confused.””
I turned toward him.
“Stop saying that.””
My voice echoed through the basement.
“Stop using that word.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew.
The word was a weapon.
Nathan looked at me differently.
Not like a wife.
Like a problem he couldn’t solve.
Emily took a step forward.
“Leah, I need you to listen.””
“No.””
Her expression broke.
“Please.””
“No.””
I held Noah tighter.
“You don’t get to disappear for five years and then ask me to trust you.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
My voice cracked.
“Do you know what it was like?””
She looked away.
“I went to your apartment.””
I froze.
“What?””
“After I left.””
The room became silent.
“I stood outside your door.””
My breathing slowed.
“I wanted to knock.””
“Why didn’t you?””
Emily looked at Nathan.
And I understood.
“He was there.””
She nodded.
“He was already inside.””
My stomach dropped.
“He knew where you lived?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Emily didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Because I already knew.
Nathan had always known more than he should.
My routines.
My fears.
My family.
My weaknesses.
He collected information.
Claire stepped forward.
“You told him everything.””
Emily looked at her.
“I was young.””
Claire’s expression softened slightly.
“I know.””
I looked between them.
“You two knew each other.””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
The answer came from Claire.
“Because I helped her escape.””
I stared.
“Escape?””
Emily nodded.
“After I found the files.””
I looked at the folders on the desk.
“The files here?””
“Yes.””
My heart pounded.
“Then why are you back?””
Nathan finally spoke.
“Because she understands the truth.””
I looked at him.
“What truth?””
He smiled slightly.
And somehow that scared me more than anger.
“The truth that you’ve been manipulated.””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“Still doing that?””
Nathan ignored her.
“Leah, you’re surrounded by people who are feeding your fears.””
I stared at him.
“You mean the people showing me evidence?””
“No.””
He pointed toward the files.
“You don’t know what those are.””
“They’re your files.””
“They’re research.””
The room went quiet.
I blinked.
“Research?””
“Yes.””
Nathan’s voice became calmer.
“I work with behavioral studies.””
I almost couldn’t believe him.
“You kept files on women because of research?””
“Understanding people isn’t a crime.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Destroying their lives is.””
Nathan looked at her.
“You were never destroyed.””
Claire’s face went blank.
“You took my daughter.””
A pause.
Nathan answered quietly.
“You lost custody.””
The cruelty of those words made my skin crawl.
He wasn’t denying it.
He was changing the wording.
Always changing the wording.
Emily moved closer to me.
“Leah, listen.””
I looked at her.
“I found something.””
“What?””
“The reason Nathan chose you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
She glanced at Noah.
Then back at me.
“It wasn’t just because of you.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“What was it?””
Emily looked at Nathan.
“He needed your family.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Emily hesitated.
Then she walked to the desk.
She opened another drawer.
Inside was a folder.
Different from the others.
No name.
No date.
Only one word.
*CARVER.*
My family name.
She handed it to me.
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Old records.
Newspaper clippings.
Photographs.
My hands shook as I looked through them.
“What is this?””
Emily whispered:
“The reason Nathan approached you.””
I turned the page.
A photograph fell out.
It was my father.
Standing beside Nathan.
But that was impossible.
My father had died before I met Nathan.
Before our relationship.
Before our wedding.
I stared.
“No.””
Emily looked at me sadly.
“Yes.””
I picked up the photo.
Nathan was younger.
Much younger.
Standing beside my father outside an office building.
The date was printed underneath.
Seven years ago.
My father was alive.
Nathan knew him.
My whole body went cold.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Nathan.
For the first time, he looked genuinely nervous.
“What did you want from my family?””
His silence was terrifying.
Emily whispered:
“Leah, your father discovered something before he died.””
“What?””
“He discovered what Nathan was doing.””
The basement seemed to spin.
My father knew.
My father had been trying to stop him.
I turned another page.
There was a letter.
My father’s handwriting.
I recognized it instantly.
A note addressed to me.
But I never received it.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
The first sentence destroyed me.
Leah, if you are reading this, it means I was right about Nathan.
I stopped breathing.
Below it:
He is not the man he says he is.
A sound came from upstairs.
A door opening.
Everyone froze.
Nathan looked toward the ceiling.
Not afraid.
Expecting.
Then footsteps approached.
Another person entered the house.
A woman’s voice called from above.
“Nathan?””
His face changed.
Not fear.
Relief.
I looked at Emily.
She went pale.
Because she recognized the voice.
“Who is that?””
Emily whispered:
“His mother.””
Doreen.
But she wasn’t alone.
Another voice followed.
A man’s voice.
Older.
Cold.
And when he spoke, I felt every piece of the puzzle shift.
“Where is Leah?””
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Leah, you need to hear this.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“Your father wasn’t Nathan’s first target.””
May you like
A pause.
“He was Nathan’s first victim.””
