Amused

Chapter 3: The Name My Husband Feared

I stared at the envelope in my hand.

For a moment, I forgot about Margaret.

I forgot about the argument downstairs.

I forgot about the restaurant, the guests, the employees, everything.

There was only one thing in the room.

The name Daniel.

Marcus had said it like it was a ghost.

Like someone from a past he had buried had suddenly walked through the front door.

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

He didn't answer.

"Marcus.""

His eyes moved to the envelope.

Then back to me.

"Sarah, don't open that here.""

My eyebrows lifted.

"Why?""

He ran a hand through his hair.

Because for the first time in our marriage, my husband looked genuinely afraid.

Not annoyed.

Not uncomfortable.

Afraid.

"Who is Daniel?"" I asked.

Marcus swallowed.

"I need to explain.""

"Then explain.""

He looked toward the door.

"Not with everyone downstairs.""

I laughed quietly.

A cold, humorless sound.

"Interesting.""

"What?""

"Tonight started with your mother telling me I wasn't good enough.""

I held up the envelope.

"Now there's a man from your past sending me secret letters, and suddenly you need privacy?""

His jaw tightened.

"That's not fair.""

I stared at him.

"Fair?""

The word came out softer than I expected.

"Marcus, do you hear yourself?""

He looked away.

That was enough.

Because I had spent years watching him avoid uncomfortable conversations.

But this time was different.

This time, whatever he was hiding wasn't just about his mother.

It was about me.

I opened the envelope.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Sarah—"

I pulled the paper out before he could stop me.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

The letter was only one page.

But the first line made my hands go cold.

Sarah,

I know Marcus told you I was gone.

I looked up.

Marcus closed his eyes.

The room felt smaller.

I kept reading.

I know he told you whatever story made it easier to move on. But you deserve to know what really happened before you make any more decisions about your life.

My heart started beating faster.

I looked at Marcus.

"What is this?""

He didn't answer.

I continued.

I tried contacting you years ago. I was told you didn't want to hear from me. I didn't believe it. I know you better than that.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

The next sentence made me stop.

The last thing I ever wanted was to hurt your family.

Your family.

Not me.

Not us.

Your family.

I looked at Marcus.

"What did you tell him?""

Marcus sat down.

Slowly.

Like his legs couldn't hold him anymore.

"Daniel was my best friend.""

I waited.

"Before I met you.""

"Okay.""

He nodded.

"And?""

He looked at the floor.

"He knew you before me.""

The silence after that sentence was terrifying.

I lowered the letter.

"What?""

Marcus rubbed his hands together.

"Daniel worked at the same company as you. Before you moved departments.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

I searched through my memories.

Names.

Faces.

Old coworkers.

Nothing.

"I don't remember anyone named Daniel.""

"Because you weren't close.""

That somehow made it worse.

"You knew him.""

"Yes.""

"And you never mentioned him?""

Marcus looked miserable.

"No.""

I stepped back.

"Why?""

He didn't answer immediately.

That was becoming a pattern.

Every important question needed to pass through silence first.

Finally, he said:

"Because Daniel knew something about me that I didn't want you to know.""

I felt the room shift.

"What?""

Marcus looked at me.

"When we met, I told you I had just left my previous job because I wanted a fresh start.""

I nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

"That wasn't the whole truth.""

I stared at him.

"What did you do?""

"Nothing illegal.""

The way he said it made my stomach twist.

"Marcus.""

He looked exhausted.

"I made a mistake.""

"What kind of mistake?""

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

Both of us froze.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Marcus looked at it.

His expression changed.

"Don't answer.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

"Because it might be him.""

"And?""

"And you don't know what he wants.""

I looked at the phone.

Then at my husband.

"Neither do you.""

The ringing stopped.

A second later, a message appeared.

I opened it.

One sentence.

Ask Marcus why he lied about the night we met.

I felt like the air had disappeared.

Slowly, I turned the phone toward him.

He read it.

And I watched the color leave his face.

"Sarah...""

"No.""

I held up my hand.

"Don't say my name.""

He stopped.

Because he knew.

For the first time in years, I wasn't asking him to comfort me.

I was asking him for the truth.

"What night is he talking about?""

Marcus didn't respond.

"Marcus.""

He sat there quietly.

Then he said something I never expected.

"The night you and I met wasn't an accident.""

I felt my fingers go numb.

"What?""

He looked at me.

"I knew who you were.""

I stared at him.

"No.""

"I didn't know everything.""

"Then what did you know?""

His eyes filled with regret.

"Your name. Your company. Where you worked.""

I took a step back.

"Why?""

He looked down.

"Because Daniel told me about you.""

I couldn't speak.

The man I married.

The man I trusted.

The man who knew every scar, every dream, every insecurity I had.

Had known about me before we met.

And he never told me.

"You approached me because of him?""

"No.""

The answer came immediately.

But this time I didn't believe it.

"Then why?""

Marcus stood.

"Sarah, please listen to me.""

"Why?""

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the moment something inside me cracked.

Because there was nothing worse than watching someone you love search for the least painful version of the truth.

I picked up the letter again.

"Who is Daniel to you now?""

Marcus didn't answer.

"Is he your enemy?""

"No.""

"Then why are you scared?""

His face tightened.

"Because Daniel knows what I did.""

"What did you do?""

He looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw the man I married.

Not the confident businessman.

Not the charming husband.

Just a man terrified of losing everything.

"I lied to you.""

My throat tightened.

"About what?""

He looked at the floor.

"About why I came into your life.""

The words sat between us.

Heavy.

Impossible.

I wanted him to explain.

I wanted him to tell me there was a misunderstanding.

I wanted him to laugh and say this was some terrible joke.

But Marcus didn't laugh.

He didn't move.

He just stood there, carrying the weight of a secret he had apparently carried for years.

A knock interrupted us.

Neither of us answered.

The door opened anyway.

Margaret stood there.

Her expression had changed.

No anger.

No judgment.

Just concern.

"Marcus?""

He turned.

"Mom?""

She looked at the letter in my hand.

Then at her son.

"I told you this day would come.""

Marcus froze.

My eyes moved between them.

"What does that mean?""

Margaret stepped inside and closed the door.

"Sarah, there are things about Marcus you don't know.""

I stared at her.

The woman who had spent years criticizing my choices.

The woman who had made me feel like an outsider in my own marriage.

Now looked like she was the one carrying a warning.

"What things?""

Margaret hesitated.

Then she whispered:

"The reason Marcus never told you about Daniel...""

She looked at her son.

"...is because Daniel was the person who warned me not to let you marry him.""

My heart stopped.

And before I could ask why, Marcus's phone began ringing.

May you like

The name on the screen was visible to all of us.

Daniel.
