Amused

Chapter 5: My Sister-in-Law's Expensive Secret

On Monday morning, I decided to do something I had avoided for years.

I called Vanessa.

She answered after the fourth ring.

“Claire? What's going on?””

Her voice sounded cheerful, almost exaggeratedly so.

“I need to ask you something about Mitchell Strategic Ventures.””

The silence on the other end lasted barely two seconds.

But it was enough.

“What about it?””

“Your name is listed as a forty-percent owner.””

She gave a brittle laugh.

“Oh, that. It's just an administrative arrangement.””

“An administrative arrangement doesn't usually make someone a forty-percent owner.””

“Daniel told me you'd been asking questions.””

“Then you already know why I'm calling.””

Vanessa sighed loudly.

“Claire, you're turning this into a scandal when it's really a family matter.””

“Did you invest your own money in the company?””

“That's none of your business.””

“Did Daniel transfer money from his consulting company into it?””

Another pause.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

“I'm looking at the bank records.””

“You have no right to look at Daniel's private business records.””

“Then why was my name used on a loan document I never signed?””

She went quiet.

When she spoke again, her voice had lost its practiced sweetness.

“Look, I don't know anything about your signature. Daniel handles the finances. He said everything was legal.””

“Did he tell you where the money came from?””

“He said he was making an investment.””

“An investment using money his business supposedly needed to survive?””

“Ask him.””

“I have. He refuses to answer.””

“Then maybe you should stop interrogating everyone and let him handle his own affairs.””

I closed my eyes briefly.

There it was again. The same strategy Daniel used whenever I asked a question he didn't want to answer.

Make the question seem unreasonable.

Make the person asking it seem difficult.

Then walk away before the truth has a chance to surface.

“Vanessa, I'm not trying to attack you. I want to understand why your name is on a company that received money from Daniel's business.””

“Maybe because I'm his sister?””

“That isn't an explanation.””

“It's the only one you're getting.””

She hung up.

I stared at my phone.

Then I opened my contacts and called Mark.

He answered from what sounded like a busy office.

“Hey, Claire. Everything okay?””

“Not exactly. I need to ask you something about the condominium investment.””

The background noise faded as he moved somewhere quieter.

“What investment?””

“The one Vanessa and Daniel set up through Mitchell Strategic Ventures.””

There was a long silence.

Then Mark said, “I think you should come over.””

I arrived at their house an hour later.

Vanessa's white SUV sat in the driveway. The front door opened before I knocked.

Mark stood there wearing jeans and a gray sweater, his expression tense.

“She's in the kitchen,” he said.

“But I need to talk to you first.””

He led me into the living room and closed the door.

“Vanessa told me Daniel was helping her buy a property,” he said.

“She said he was providing business advice and introducing her to a lender.””

“Did she say how much she invested?””

“She told me she used money she'd saved over the years.””

“Do you know how much?””

“About forty thousand dollars.””

I stared at him.

“The company purchased a condominium for $420,000.””

Mark's mouth fell open.

“What?””

“The company records show Vanessa owns forty percent. Daniel owns sixty percent. The property purchase agreement lists the company as the buyer.””

Mark sat down slowly.

“That's impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because we don't have forty thousand dollars in savings. Not anymore.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

He rubbed his face.

“Last summer, Vanessa told me she wanted to invest in a property with her brother. She said she'd found a way to make money without taking a huge risk. She asked me to move $25,000 from our joint savings account into her personal account.””

“Did you?””

“Yes. She said she'd pay it back after the property closed.””

“Did she?””

“No.””

He looked toward the kitchen.

“Then, two months ago, she asked for another $12,000. She said there had been unexpected closing costs.””

My stomach tightened.

“Did you give her that money?””

“I did.””

“Mark, did you know Daniel's business was in debt?””

“No. Vanessa told me his company was doing well.””

I sat down opposite him.

“Then where did she get the rest of her investment?””

He stared at the carpet.

“That's what I'm trying to figure out.””

The door to the kitchen swung open.

Vanessa stood there holding a mug of coffee.

“What are you two whispering about?””

Mark looked up.

“Why did you tell me you invested forty thousand dollars of your own money?””

Her expression changed.

“Because I did.””

“No, you didn't. We gave you thirty-seven thousand dollars from our savings.””

“I was going to replace it.””

“When?””

“Mark, please don't do this in front of Claire.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Vanessa set the mug down hard enough to make the coffee splash over the rim.

“I was protecting our future!””

Mark stood.

“From what?””

“From living paycheck to paycheck for the rest of our lives!””

“We have a good life, Vanessa. We have a house. We have jobs. We have savings that you emptied without telling me what you were doing with them.””

“I didn't empty anything.””

“You transferred thirty-seven thousand dollars out of our joint account!””

“Because I was investing it!””

“With Daniel's company?””

Her face went pale.

I watched her realize that the conversation had moved beyond something she could dismiss as family gossip.

Mark stepped closer.

“Did Daniel tell you where the money came from?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“He said it was business capital.””

“Whose capital?””

“His.””

“Then why did you need our savings?””

She looked at me.

“This is your fault.””

I blinked.

“My fault?””

“You've been poisoning everyone against Daniel because he made one mistake with your precious little bank account.””

Mark stared at her.

“One mistake?””

She waved a hand toward me.

“She has everyone convinced she's some innocent victim. She makes more money than Daniel. She paid for a few dinners. Now she's acting like he robbed a bank.””

I stood up.

“Did he forge my signature?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

Then closed.

Mark turned toward her.

“What signature?””

She looked between us.

“I don't know anything about that.””

“You went quiet when I mentioned it on the phone,” I said.

“You went quiet when I mentioned the loan. And now you're accusing me of causing the problem.””

“I don't know anything about your signature!””

“Then why are you afraid to answer the question?””

Her eyes flashed.

“Get out of my house.””

Mark turned toward her in disbelief.

“This is my house too.””

“I said get out!””

“No,” he replied.

“You can explain what's happening, or you can keep screaming. But I'm done pretending everything is fine.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked frightened.

Not angry.

Frightened.

She reached for her mug, but her hand trembled enough to spill more coffee across the counter.

Then she said something that changed the entire conversation.

“Daniel promised me it was temporary.””

Mark stared at her.

“What was temporary?””

She looked at me.

I held her gaze.

“The money,” she whispered.

“He said he'd replace it before anyone noticed.””

My heart began pounding.

“Replace whose money?””

She swallowed.

“All of it.””

“Vanessa, be specific.””

She shook her head.

“I can't.””

“Why not?””

“Because if I tell you, he'll destroy me.””

Mark stepped back as if she had struck him.

“Who will destroy you?””

She pressed both hands against the counter.

“Daniel.””

The room fell silent.

I thought of the anonymous messages, the unexplained transfers, the condominium purchase, and the deadline on the property document.

“Vanessa,” I said carefully, “what happens on October 30?””

She looked at me sharply.

“How do you know that date?””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Because I found it on the property agreement.””

She began shaking her head.

“No. No, that can't be right.””

“What can't be right?””

She looked at Mark, then at me.

“October 30 is when the final payment is due.””

“For the condominium?””

She nodded.

“How much?””

“Eighty-five thousand dollars.””

Mark gripped the back of a chair.

“Where are we supposed to get eighty-five thousand dollars?””

Vanessa began crying.

“Daniel said he'd take care of it.””

“Using what money?”” I demanded.

“I don't know!””

“Does the company have the money?””

“No.””

“Does Daniel?””

“I don't know!””

Her voice cracked.

Then she wiped her cheeks and looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

“Claire, you need to understand something. Daniel didn't create this investment because he wanted to get rich.””

“Then why did he?””

She hesitated.

“He said he needed somewhere to put the money until he could pay it back.””

“Pay what back?””

She covered her mouth.

Mark stared at her.

“Vanessa. What did you do?””

She shook her head violently.

“I didn't know what he was planning. I swear to you, I didn't know.””

I stepped closer.

“Planning what?””

She looked at me through her tears.

“Daniel told me the business was going to collapse. He said if the money stayed in the company, the creditors would take everything. The investment was supposed to protect some of it until he could reorganize the business.””

The words seemed to hang in the air.

“You knew he was moving money out of his business because he was afraid of creditors?”” I asked.

“I knew he was trying to protect it. I didn't know it was illegal.””

“Did he tell you where the money came from?””

“He said it was company money.””

“And the money from Mark?””

“He said that was temporary too.””

Mark's face hardened.

“You stole from our savings because your brother promised to replace it with money he had already moved out of his business?””

Vanessa began sobbing harder.

“I thought it would work!””

Mark looked away.

I felt no satisfaction in her confession.

She had helped conceal something serious, but she was also trapped in a lie that seemed to have grown far beyond her control.

I took a breath.

“Vanessa, I need you to tell me everything Daniel told you about the final payment.””

She wiped her face.

“He said the buyer would complete the purchase on October 30. Once the sale went through, the money would come back into the company, and everything would be settled.””

“Who's the buyer?””

“I don't know. Daniel handled that.””

“Then why are you listed as a managing member?””

“Because he said the company needed someone else on the paperwork.””

“Did you sign the company documents?””

“Yes.””

“Did you sign anything for my loan?””

“No!””

Her answer came so quickly that I believed she was telling the truth about that particular question.

But it didn't clear her of everything else.

I looked at Mark.

“You should secure copies of your bank statements and anything Vanessa signed. Don't delete messages or transfer any more money without understanding what you're authorizing.””

Mark nodded slowly.

Vanessa stared at me.

“Are you going to report him?””

“I haven't decided what I'm going to do about Daniel. But I won't lie for him.””

She lowered her head.

As I walked toward the front door, she called after me.

“Claire!””

I turned.

She stood in the kitchen, looking smaller than I had ever seen her.

“There's something else,” she whispered.

I waited.

“Daniel said the final payment wasn't the real deadline.””

My fingers tightened around my purse.

“What does that mean?””

She looked toward the hallway, as though she feared someone might be listening.

“He said that if the money wasn't in place by October 30, someone would come looking for it.””

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

“Vanessa, you have to tell me.””

She shook her head.

Then she spoke so quietly I almost missed it.

“He said the money belonged to someone dangerous.””

I left the house with my mind racing.

The missing money was no longer simply a question of business debts, secret investments, or family deception.

Daniel had apparently moved funds because he feared losing them to creditors. He had involved his sister. He had used my financial information without permission. And now there was a deadline tied to money Vanessa couldn't explain.

As I reached my car, my phone rang.

An unfamiliar man spoke when I answered.

“Mrs. Mitchell?””

“Who is this?””

“My name is Andrew Cole. I'm an attorney representing one of the parties involved in your husband's investment company.””

My stomach dropped.

“What party?””

“I can't discuss the details over the phone. But I need to meet with you before October 30.””

“Why me?””

A brief pause followed.

“Because your husband has been telling people that you guaranteed the debt.””

I gripped the phone.

“I did not.””

“I believe you. But there's another problem.””

“What problem?””

“The documents we've reviewed suggest that your name may have been used to secure more than one financial obligation.””

My knees nearly buckled.

“How many?””

“I can't confirm the total until we meet.””

Then he added the words that made my blood run cold.

“And Mrs. Mitchell, if what we suspect is correct, your husband may not be the only person who has been misled.””

The call ended.

I stood beside my car, staring at the phone.

May you like

October 30 was four days away.

And suddenly, I wasn't sure whether I was investigating my husband's secrets or discovering that someone had been building a trap around me.
