Amused

Chapter 9: The Woman Who Planned Everything

“Claire.””

Daniel said her name quietly.

She looked up.

He held out the photograph.

“Tell me why your signature is on this document.””

Claire stared at it.

For several seconds, she didn't move.

Then she whispered:

“I can explain.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Of course you can.””

“I didn't forge Richard's signature.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Claire sat down.

My mother stood near the fireplace, holding her phone with both hands.

My father had moved to the far end of the room.

He looked older than he had that morning.

Rachel was pacing beside the window.

And Sophie was asleep in a guest bedroom, completely unaware that the adults downstairs were tearing apart everything they believed about their family.

Claire finally spoke.

“Victoria contacted me last year.””

Daniel folded his arms.

“Why?””

“She knew about our fertility problems.””

“We didn't have fertility problems. We never even started treatment.””

Claire lowered her head.

“I know.””

“Then why did you tell everyone we did?””

“Because I thought it would make the pregnancy story believable.””

Daniel stared at her.

She continued.

“Victoria told me about Emily. She explained that Richard was her biological father and that Rachel was struggling to raise her alone.””

Rachel immediately interrupted.

“That's a lie.””

Claire looked at her.

“Victoria said you had agreed to let Emily be raised by another family.””

“I never agreed to that!””

“I didn't know.””

“You didn't know because you never bothered to ask me!””

Claire began crying.

“I was told everything had been arranged.””

Rachel moved closer.

“You saw my daughter as an opportunity.””

Claire shook her head.

“I wanted to love her.””

“You wanted to take her.””

Daniel raised his hand.

“Enough. Claire, start from the beginning.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Victoria told me that if Emily came to live with us, Richard would finally accept responsibility for her. She said the family would be protected from scandal because Emily would be introduced as our daughter.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why would Emily be introduced as our daughter?””

“Because you wanted a child.””

“I wanted a child with my wife. I didn't want to be part of a cover-up.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Victoria said you would understand once you held her.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You made that decision for me.””

“I thought it would work.””

“And the fake pregnancy?””

Claire took a breath.

“That was Victoria's idea.””

My father looked up.

“What?””

“She said I needed time to prepare everyone. She suggested the prosthetic belly, the staged ultrasound photographs, and the maternity appointments.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“You went along with all of it.””

Claire nodded.

“Because I thought Emily would eventually become ours.””

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“She was never yours.””

Claire looked toward her.

“I know that now.””

“No. You knew it when you signed the agreement.””

Claire lowered her head.

Daniel walked toward the window.

“Why did you need so much money?””

She hesitated.

“Victoria said there would be legal expenses.””

Helen, who had been examining the documents, looked up.

“That's not what the transactions show.””

Claire turned toward her.

“What?””

Helen opened the folder.

“I reviewed the account records before coming here. Several payments were made to an individual named Thomas Bell.””

Claire went pale.

Daniel turned.

“Who is Thomas Bell?””

Helen looked at Claire.

“Would you like to explain?””

Claire shook her head.

Daniel approached.

“Who is he?””

“He was helping Victoria.””

“With what?””

Claire remained silent.

Helen placed a printed invoice on the table.

The description was brief.

Private investigation and document preparation.

The payment was twelve thousand dollars.

Daniel stared at the amount.

“Did you pay someone to investigate your own family?””

Claire whispered:

“No.””

Helen pointed to the account number.

“The transfer came from your joint savings account.””

Daniel looked at his wife.

“Then who did?””

Claire finally spoke.

“Victoria.””

My father slammed his hand against the wall.

“Enough! I want her here.””

My mother looked at him.

“Why? So you can ask her to explain why she stole your granddaughter?””

He turned toward her.

“Margaret…”

“Don't.””

Her voice was quiet.

But there was something in it that made him stop.

“I have spent thirty-five years believing we had an honest marriage. Tonight, I learned that you had an affair, fathered a child, and allowed your sister to hide it.””

My father lowered his head.

My mother continued.

“And now you're standing here acting as though the biggest problem is that Victoria won't answer your phone.””

He had no response.

Then Rachel's phone rang.

She answered immediately.

“Hello?””

A male voice spoke.

Rachel's face changed.

“Where is she?””

She listened.

Then she covered her mouth.

“Are you sure?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What's happening?””

Rachel ended the call.

“Emily has been found.””

Everyone exhaled at once.

“Where?”” Daniel asked.

“At a private residence near the old Riverside Hotel. The police found her with a woman who was supposed to be looking after her.””

Rachel began crying with relief.

“She's safe?””

“Yes. They said she's healthy. They're taking her to the hospital for a checkup.””

My mother hugged Rachel.

“Oh, thank God.””

Rachel clung to her.

For the first time that evening, there was a moment of genuine relief.

But it didn't last.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Did you know where she was?””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

“Did you arrange for Victoria to collect her?””

“No.””

He stared at her.

Then he asked the question that seemed to hurt him more than everything else.

“Did you ever intend to tell me the truth?””

Claire looked up.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“After we had the baby.””

Daniel's expression collapsed.

“There was never going to be a baby, Claire.””

“I know.””

“You were going to let me believe Emily was mine.””

Claire started crying.

“I wanted you to love her.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don't get to manufacture love through a lie.””

He walked toward the hallway.

Claire followed.

“Daniel, please don't leave.””

He stopped.

“I need some space.””

“You can't just walk away from our marriage.””

He turned.

“Six months ago, I thought we were preparing for a daughter. Tonight, I discovered you had been planning to take someone else's child, using money from our savings, while hiding my father's affair.””

Claire covered her face.

“I'm sorry.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I'm sorry too.””

She raised her head.

“What?””

“I'm sorry I didn't see how unhappy you were. I'm sorry you felt you couldn't tell me the truth. But I am not sorry for refusing to live inside this lie.””

He continued down the hallway.

My mother watched him go.

Then she turned toward Claire.

“You should leave.””

Claire stared at her.

“Margaret?””

“You heard me.””

“Please. I have nowhere to go.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“You had six months to think about what would happen when the truth came out.””

Claire looked around the room.

Nobody offered to defend her.

Finally, she picked up her handbag.

As she walked toward the front door, she stopped beside me.

“You think you've won?””

I stared at her.

“Won what?””

She leaned closer.

“You have no idea what Victoria has.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Claire looked toward my father.

Then she whispered:

“Ask your father about the money he transferred to Victoria every month.””

My father suddenly looked up.

Claire continued.

“Ask him why she needed thirty thousand dollars just before Emily was born.””

My mother's expression changed.

“What thirty thousand dollars?””

Claire stepped toward the door.

Then she turned back one last time.

“Because Emily wasn't the only secret Victoria was protecting.””

She left.

Nobody followed her.

My father stood motionless.

My mother slowly turned toward him.

“Richard.””

He looked at her.

“Is there something else?””

He opened his mouth.

Then his phone rang.

The caller ID showed VICTORIA.

My mother reached for it.

“Put it on speaker.””

He answered.

Victoria's voice sounded unusually calm.

“Richard, I assume everyone knows about Emily now.””

My father said nothing.

She continued.

“Then I suppose it's time to tell them about the other child.””

My mother gripped the edge of the table.

“What other child?””

Victoria laughed softly.

“Margaret, you really should have asked your husband more questions.””

Daniel returned from the hallway.

“What is she talking about?””

Victoria answered before my father could.

“I'm talking about the child Richard and I had before Emily.””

My mother stopped breathing.

My father closed his eyes.

Victoria continued.

“She isn't dead, Margaret. She's alive. She's grown up. And she's been part of your family for years.””

I felt a cold sensation move through my body.

Daniel looked at me.

My mother looked at my father.

And Victoria delivered the final sentence.

“You've been calling her your niece.””

Then the call ended.

My father sank into a chair.

Nobody spoke.

May you like

Because every person in that room had just realized that the fake pregnancy had exposed only the first layer of a family secret that had been buried for decades.

And somewhere in our family photographs, at our holiday dinners, and at every celebration we'd ever attended, there was another child who had never been told the truth about her parents.
