Chapter 6: The Truth Hidden in the Recording
The studio went silent.
Emma stared at Victoria.
“What did you say?””
Victoria stood beneath the doorway, her face half-covered by shadows.
“Your grandmother wasn’t the only person who created that routine.””
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“Don’t do this.””
Victoria looked at her.
“You know I’m telling the truth.””
Emma shook her head.
“No. You’re trying to confuse us.””
Victoria looked at the USB drive in Emma’s hand.
“Listen to it.””
The words surprised everyone.
“You want the truth? Play it.””
Emma hesitated.
Victoria stepped inside.
“I’m tired of being the villain in a story everyone else wrote.””
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
“You made yourself the villain.””
Victoria ignored her.
“Your mother was brilliant. I won’t deny that.””
The admission shocked Emma.
“But she wasn’t alone.””
Victoria looked at Lily.
“She had help.””
“From who?”” Emma asked.
Victoria’s eyes moved toward the notebook.
“Open it.””
Emma looked down.
She opened the old notebook.
The pages were filled with Clara’s handwriting.
Dance steps.
Notes.
Ideas.
But near the back, she saw something unexpected.
A different handwriting.
A man’s.
Daniel Whitmore.
Emma looked up.
“Daniel helped her?””
Victoria nodded.
“He wasn’t just a journalist.””
Eleanor’s face changed.
“No.””
Victoria smiled sadly.
“He was a dancer.””
Emma felt confused.
“Then why did he become a journalist?””
Victoria looked at the empty studio.
“Because he gave up dancing after an injury.””
She walked slowly around the room.
“Clara created movements. Daniel understood how to connect them.””
Emma looked at the notebook.
“So they created it together?””
Victoria didn’t answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
Eleanor stepped forward.
“But Clara created the heart of it.””
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.””
Then she looked at Emma.
“And I created the final performance.””
Emma felt anger rising.
“So you admit it.””
Victoria’s eyes narrowed.
“I admit I made a mistake.””
“You stole credit.””
“I was twenty-one years old.””
“That doesn’t excuse it.””
“No.””
Victoria looked down.
“It doesn’t.””
The confession was so unexpected that Emma didn’t know what to say.
This wasn’t the arrogant woman from the ballroom.
This was someone carrying something heavy.
But Emma remembered Lily.
She remembered her mother’s pain.
“I want to hear the recording.””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Then you should know something first.””
“What?””
“Daniel didn’t disappear because of me.””
Eleanor looked shocked.
“Victoria…”
“I didn’t say I was innocent.””
Victoria’s voice became quiet.
“But someone else was involved.””
Emma frowned.
“Who?””
Victoria looked toward the USB drive.
“Play it.””
Emma inserted the drive into the old laptop they found in the studio.
The screen flickered.
A video appeared.
A young Clara sat in front of a camera.
Emma froze.
She had never seen her mother like this.
Confident.
Powerful.
Alive.
Beside her sat Daniel.
“You’re sure you want to record this?”” Daniel asked.
Young Clara smiled.
“If someone takes my work, I want the truth to exist somewhere.””
Emma’s breath caught.
The recording continued.
Daniel looked at the camera.
“Today is March 14th. Clara Carter is documenting the creation of the Rising Stars routine.””
Clara nodded.
“I created the original choreography, but Daniel helped me develop the emotional structure.””
Daniel smiled.
“We built it together.””
Emma looked at Victoria.
Victoria watched the screen silently.
Then the video changed.
A younger Victoria appeared.
She looked nervous.
Not arrogant.
Not famous.
Clara smiled at her.
“You’re ready.””
Young Victoria shook her head.
“I’m not.””
“Yes, you are.””
“But what if I fail?””
Clara laughed.
“Then you learn.””
The scene was almost beautiful.
Until the next recording.
Daniel’s voice sounded different.
Urgent.
“Clara, we have a problem.””
Young Clara turned.
“What happened?””
“Victoria submitted the routine under her name.””
Silence.
Young Clara looked devastated.
“Why?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Because she thinks winning is the only way to survive.””
The video paused.
Then another clip began.
Victoria crying.
“I’m sorry.””
Clara looked heartbroken.
“You knew what you were doing.””
“I was scared.””
“You hurt me.””
“I know.””
Emma watched as Clara sat silently.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“You can still fix this.””
Victoria looked up.
“How?””
“Tell the truth.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Emma looked at Victoria.
“You had a chance.””
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Victoria looked away.
“Because someone threatened me.””
The room became still.
Emma whispered:
“Who?””
Victoria walked toward the window.
Rain streamed down the glass.
“Someone who knew Clara’s secret.””
Eleanor stepped closer.
“Who?””
Victoria turned.
Her face was full of fear.
“The person who destroyed Daniel.””
Emma felt a chill.
“Who destroyed him?””
Victoria looked at the notebook.
At the recording.
At Lily.
Then she said the name.
A name nobody expected.
“Clara’s closest friend.””
Emma froze.
“My mother’s friend?””
Victoria nodded.
“And she’s the reason your grandmother hid the truth.””
Lily whispered:
“Why?””
Victoria looked at the little girl.
“Because she wasn’t trying to protect herself.””
A pause.
“She was trying to protect you.””
Emma stared.
“Protect me from what?””
Victoria reached into her coat and pulled out an old envelope.
On the front was Clara’s handwriting.
But the name written below it was Emma’s.
Victoria handed it over.
“Your mother wrote this the night before she died.””
Emma looked at the envelope.
Her hands shook.
Because she recognized the handwriting.

And underneath her name were four words.
*The truth about your father.*
