Chapter 4: The Witness Nobody Knew

Emma stared at the hidden page until the letters blurred.

The ballroom continued moving around her, but she felt frozen.

At the top of the page was one name.

*Daniel Whitmore.*

She read it again.

And again.

Nothing.

The name meant nothing to her.

But judging by Eleanor’s reaction, it meant everything.

The older woman’s face had gone pale.

“Where did you get that?”” Eleanor whispered.

Emma looked up.

“It was inside the envelope.””

Eleanor reached for the page but stopped halfway.

Her hand trembled.

“Daniel…”

Lily looked between them.

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered.

That scared Emma more than anything.

She had spent her entire life believing she knew her family’s story.

Her mother was Clara Carter.

A kind woman who worked quietly, raised Emma alone, and spent her final years teaching a little girl to dance.

That was the story.

Simple.

Safe.

But tonight, every piece of that story had started breaking apart.

Emma folded the paper carefully.

“Eleanor, I need answers.””

The older woman looked toward the crowded ballroom.

“Not here.””

Emma’s patience disappeared.

“No. We’re done hiding.””

Her voice wasn’t loud, but it carried.

“You knew my mother. Victoria knew my mother. Apparently everyone knew something except me.””

Lily squeezed her mother’s hand.

Emma looked down and softened immediately.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.””

Lily shook her head.

“I want to know too.””

Eleanor looked at the little girl.

And something in her expression changed.

“You have Clara’s courage.””

Emma noticed the way Eleanor said it.

Not kindness.

Not nostalgia.

Something closer to respect.

The three of them moved away from the crowd into a quiet hallway outside the ballroom.

The expensive decorations continued there too, but the silence felt different.

Real.

Eleanor finally spoke.

“Daniel Whitmore was a journalist.””

“A journalist?”” Emma asked.

“Yes. But not the kind who chased celebrity gossip. He investigated powerful people.””

Emma looked at the paper.

“And he knew my mother?””

“He knew the truth.””

The words sent a chill through her.

“What truth?””

Eleanor looked down.

“Twenty years ago, before Victoria became famous, there was a competition called the International Rising Stars Dance Championship.””

Emma nodded slowly.

She had heard of it.

Everyone had.

It was the event that launched Victoria Ashford’s career.

“She won,” Emma said.

Eleanor gave a sad smile.

“Yes.””

“Then what’s the problem?””

Eleanor hesitated.

“Because the routine she performed wasn’t hers.””

The hallway felt colder.

Emma looked at Lily.

Then back at Eleanor.

“My mother’s?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Clara created it.””

Emma swallowed.

“So why didn’t she say anything?””

Eleanor’s eyes lowered.

“Because she believed Victoria would admit the truth.””

A bitter laugh escaped Emma.

“She trusted her.””

“Yes.””

“And Victoria didn’t.””

“No.””

Eleanor looked at the ballroom doors.

“She saw an opportunity. She saw fame. She saw millions of people applauding her.””

Emma tightened her jaw.

“What happened to Daniel?””

Eleanor looked at the paper.

“He was the only person who found evidence.””

“What kind of evidence?””

“A recording.””

Emma’s heart skipped.

“A recording?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Daniel interviewed Clara before the competition. She explained when she created the routine, how she taught it, and why she believed Victoria deserved a chance.””

“Then why wasn’t it released?””

Eleanor’s expression darkened.

“Because the night before he published the story, he disappeared.””

Silence.

Lily’s eyes widened.

“He disappeared?””

Eleanor nodded.

“His apartment was empty. His files were gone. His investigation vanished.””

Emma whispered:

“Did Victoria do it?””

Eleanor didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

The silence said enough.

Suddenly, Emma’s phone vibrated.

She looked down.

An unknown number.

A message.

*Stop searching for Clara’s past. Some doors should stay closed.*

Emma stared at the screen.

Her stomach tightened.

Eleanor noticed.

“What happened?””

Emma showed her.

The older woman’s face changed instantly.

“You need to leave.””

Emma looked confused.

“What?””

“Now.””

“Why?””

“Because whoever sent that message knows you have the evidence.””

Lily moved closer to her mother.

Emma looked back toward the ballroom.

Through the glass doors, she could see Victoria smiling for photographers.

Perfect.

Untouchable.

But now Emma saw something else.

Fear.

Victoria wasn’t just hiding a secret.

She was terrified someone would reveal it.

Then another message appeared.

This time, it included a photograph.

Emma opened it.

Her hands began shaking.

It was an old picture of Clara.

But she wasn’t alone.

Standing beside her was Daniel Whitmore.

And behind them was a small dance studio.

A studio Emma recognized.

Because it had belonged to her family.

At the bottom of the photo was a sentence.

*Your mother knew where the truth was hidden.*

Emma looked up.

“Eleanor…”

The older woman stared at the picture.

Then she whispered something that made Emma’s blood run cold.

“Daniel found Clara’s final secret.””

“What secret?””

May you like

Eleanor looked at Lily.

“The one she was willing to risk everything to protect.””
