Amused

Chapter 8: The Morning Everything Fell Apart

At 6:30 Saturday morning, Marcus was already awake.

He had slept for less than three hours.

His dining table was covered with documents, printed emails, bank statements, and copies of the disputed property agreements.

Rebecca had arranged for a property attorney to attend a meeting with the title company that morning.

The bank had placed the disputed loan application under review.

The school had confirmed that Lily's enrollment would not be changed without proper authorization.

For the first time in days, Marcus felt that something was finally moving in the right direction.

Then he heard the doorbell.

It was 7:12.

He checked the security camera.

Vanessa stood outside.

Beside her was Elaine.

And behind them was a man Marcus recognized from the photograph Richard had sent.

Richard Cole.

Marcus opened the door but didn't step aside.

"What are you doing here?""

Vanessa looked at her watch.

"We're here to pick up Lily.""

"She isn't going anywhere.""

Elaine stepped forward.

"Marcus, please don't make a scene.""

He looked at her.

"You brought a real estate broker to my house at seven in the morning.""

Richard cleared his throat.

"I'm only here because Mrs. Reed requested that I deliver some documents.""

"Then leave them outside.""

Vanessa pushed past the doorway.

"Marcus, this is getting ridiculous. We agreed that Lily would spend the weekend with Claire.""

"No, we didn't.""

"You don't get to change your mind every time you become emotional.""

Marcus stepped between her and the hallway.

"You're not taking Lily.""

Elaine sighed.

"She needs some time away from all this.""

"She's six years old. She doesn't need to be dragged into a property transaction.""

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"Perhaps I should wait outside.""

"That's probably best," Marcus replied.

Richard stepped back onto the porch.

Vanessa turned toward her mother.

"See? This is exactly what I told you. He refuses to cooperate.""

Marcus picked up his phone.

"Rebecca is on her way. You can explain everything to her.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"Why is your lawyer coming?""

"Because you've been submitting documents with my signature.""

Elaine immediately raised her voice.

"Those documents were prepared in good faith!""

Marcus turned toward her.

"Then why did you list yourself as the buyer of my house?""

The room went silent.

Vanessa looked at her mother.

Elaine's face hardened.

"That's a private investment proposal.""

"Using a forged property authorization?""

"You don't understand the arrangement.""

"Then explain it.""

Elaine straightened her coat.

"Vanessa has been trying to build a stable future. You have a valuable property, and there are financial pressures in this household. It made sense to consolidate everything.""

Marcus stared at her.

"By selling my home to yourself for half its value?""

"It would have been a temporary arrangement.""

"Temporary?""

"We could have refinanced later.""

Marcus almost laughed.

"You were going to take my daughter away, sell my house to yourself, and call it temporary?""

Elaine's expression changed.

"Don't be dramatic.""

From upstairs came a small voice.

"Daddy?""

Marcus turned.

Lily stood at the top of the staircase in her pink pajamas.

She was holding her stuffed rabbit.

Vanessa immediately changed her tone.

"Sweetheart, go get dressed. We're going to Grandma's.""

Lily didn't move.

Marcus climbed two steps.

"Baby, come here.""

She came down slowly.

When she reached him, she wrapped her arms around his waist.

Vanessa frowned.

"Lily, don't be difficult.""

Marcus looked at his wife.

"Don't speak to her like that.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"She's coming with me.""

"No.""

"Marcus, I am her stepmother.""

"And you have no authority to remove her from her home without the proper agreement.""

Elaine shook her head.

"This is why we needed a temporary arrangement. You refuse to see reason.""

Marcus looked at Lily.

"Go upstairs and get dressed, sweetheart. You can stay in your room until I'm ready.""

Lily looked at Vanessa.

Then she whispered, "I don't want to go.""

Marcus kissed her forehead.

"You don't have to.""

She hurried upstairs.

Vanessa watched her disappear.

Then she turned toward Marcus.

"You've made her afraid of me.""

Marcus stared at her.

"No. You've given her reasons to be afraid.""

At 7:48, Rebecca arrived with another attorney.

The second attorney introduced himself as Thomas Miller, a property and real estate specialist.

He carried a leather briefcase and immediately asked to see the disputed documents.

Richard was still outside.

Thomas asked Marcus to invite him in.

When Richard entered, he looked as though he would rather be anywhere else.

Thomas placed the property authorization on the dining table.

"Mr. Cole, did you submit this document to the title company?""

Richard nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you personally verify the owner's signature?""

"I relied on the documents supplied by Mrs. Reed.""

Thomas pointed to the signature.

"Did you compare it with the original registered documents?""

Richard hesitated.

"No.""

"Did you contact Mr. Reed?""

"No.""

"Did you obtain written confirmation from him?""

Richard looked at Vanessa.

"Mrs. Reed assured me that everything was authorized.""

Thomas turned to Marcus.

"Did you authorize the sale?""

"No.""

"Did you sign this document?""

"No.""

Thomas made a note.

Then he looked at Richard.

"You need to preserve every communication, draft, and electronic submission related to this property. Do not delete anything.""

Richard nodded.

"I understand.""

Vanessa stood abruptly.

"This is absurd. Richard was only helping.""

Thomas turned toward her.

"Then you should have no problem producing the original authorization.""

Vanessa looked away.

Rebecca opened her folder.

"Mrs. Reed, I also need an explanation for the temporary care agreement sent to Claire Reed.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"That was a family document.""

"It contains a property settlement provision.""

"Because everything is connected.""

Rebecca placed another sheet on the table.

"And this document claims Marcus agreed to transfer his ownership interest.""

Vanessa said nothing.

Rebecca continued.

"Do you have any written evidence of that agreement?""

Vanessa looked at Elaine.

Elaine intervened.

"We were working toward an understanding.""

"That isn't an answer.""

Elaine's voice sharpened.

"You lawyers make everything unnecessarily complicated.""

Thomas remained calm.

"Property ownership is complicated when someone tries to transfer a house without the owner's consent.""

Richard cleared his throat.

"I should probably explain something.""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Richard.""

He ignored her.

"Mrs. Parker approached me about purchasing the property six weeks ago. She said her daughter would eventually receive ownership through a family settlement.""

Marcus stared at Elaine.

"Six weeks?""

Richard nodded.

"She asked for a discounted purchase because she believed there would be no public listing.""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"That's not what we discussed!""

Richard opened his briefcase.

"I have the correspondence.""

He placed a printed email on the table.

Elaine looked at it.

Then her face changed.

The email included a proposed purchase price and a request that the property be transferred before the end of the month.

There was another message.

This one from Vanessa.

*Once Lily is placed with Claire, Marcus will have fewer reasons to refuse. We can present the transfer as a necessary financial restructuring.*

Marcus felt his stomach turn.

Rebecca read the message carefully.

Then she looked at Vanessa.

"Did you write this?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Elaine suddenly grabbed the papers.

"Enough. This is a private family matter.""

Thomas retrieved the document.

"Please don't remove evidence from the table.""

Elaine glared at him.

"Do you know who I am?""

Thomas didn't blink.

"Someone whose name appears on a proposed purchase agreement.""

For the first time, Elaine seemed to realize that her usual authority wasn't working.

She sat down.

At 8:35, Claire arrived.

She walked directly to Marcus.

"Where's Lily?""

"Upstairs.""

Claire looked relieved.

Then she placed her folder on the table.

"I brought everything Vanessa sent me.""

Rebecca reviewed the documents.

There were emails, text messages, and the unsigned temporary care agreement.

One message stood out.

*Vanessa: Please sign this before Saturday. Once Lily is with you, the rest will be much easier.*

Claire had replied:

*Claire: I won't sign anything until Marcus speaks to me directly.*

Vanessa's response was chilling.

*Vanessa: He'll understand once everything is finalized.*

Marcus looked at his wife.

"How long have you been planning this?""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"I was trying to solve a problem.""

"What problem?""

She looked at Elaine.

Elaine answered for her.

"Her business was in trouble.""

Marcus stared.

"So you decided to use my house.""

"Your house is a marital asset," Elaine said.

"Not according to the title.""

"You married my daughter.""

"And that didn't give you ownership.""

Elaine leaned forward.

"Marcus, you're being selfish. Vanessa has worked hard. She deserves security.""

Marcus shook his head.

"She deserves honesty. So does everyone else.""

Vanessa suddenly began crying.

"I didn't think it would go this far.""

Marcus looked at her.

"You submitted documents to the bank. You tried to transfer Lily's school records. You asked my sister to sign away my property rights. You contacted my late wife's attorney about a trust that doesn't belong to you.""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I was desperate.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

She lowered her hands.

"Because you would have said no.""

Marcus stared at her.

"That's the entire point of asking.""

A little after nine, Rebecca received a call.

She listened for several seconds.

Then she looked at Marcus.

"The title company has confirmed that no ownership transfer has been completed.""

Marcus exhaled.

Rebecca continued.

"However, they received a second submission last night.""

Thomas leaned forward.

"What kind?""

"A proposed transfer authorization supported by an electronic identity verification.""

Marcus frowned.

"Whose identity?""

Rebecca looked at the screen.

"Yours.""

Marcus felt the room spin slightly.

"I never authorized it.""

Thomas immediately asked for the submission details.

Rebecca opened the email.

There was a verification record.

The document had been submitted from a device registered to Vanessa's boutique business.

Thomas looked toward her.

"Mrs. Reed, did you submit this?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No.""

"Did anyone at your business have access to your computer?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you provide anyone with Mr. Reed's identity documents?""

"No.""

Marcus looked at her.

"Then how did my identity verification get attached?""

Vanessa stared at the table.

Elaine suddenly spoke.

"Richard handled the documents.""

Richard shook his head.

"I did not submit the identity verification. I only received the proposed paperwork.""

Thomas raised his hand.

"Let's establish exactly what happened before making accusations.""

Rebecca looked at Marcus.

"We're requesting the original digital records. For now, no transfer has been completed, and the title company has been instructed to flag any further submission.""

Marcus nodded.

He felt relieved.

But only slightly.

Then Claire looked at her phone.

"Marcus?""

He turned.

"What's wrong?""

She showed him a message.

It was from Vanessa's business accountant.

*Claire, please tell Marcus to check his bank statements. There have been payments from the household account to the boutique that I was told were authorized. I don't think he knows about all of them.*

Marcus stared at the screen.

"What payments?""

Claire shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Rebecca immediately asked for the accountant's contact details.

Then Vanessa stood.

"I want everyone out of my house.""

Marcus looked at her.

"Your house?""

She pointed toward the door.

"I can't do this anymore.""

Marcus didn't move.

"You're welcome to leave if you need space. But we're not finished.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with fury.

"You've humiliated me.""

Marcus looked at the papers spread across the table.

"No. You've finally been asked to explain yourself.""

She grabbed her handbag and walked upstairs.

A moment later, the bedroom door slammed.

At 10:15, Lily came downstairs.

She had changed into her yellow sweater and jeans.

She looked at the adults gathered around the table.

"Is Grandma leaving?""

Elaine softened her expression.

"Come here, sweetheart.""

Lily hesitated.

Marcus noticed.

He walked toward her.

"Would you like to say hello?""

Lily shook her head.

"That's okay.""

Elaine looked hurt.

"I used to buy you presents, remember?""

Lily nodded.

"You bought me a doll.""

"That's right.""

Lily looked down.

"Can I keep it?""

Elaine seemed confused.

"Of course.""

"Even if I don't go with you?""

Nobody spoke.

Marcus crouched beside Lily.

"You can keep every gift that belongs to you.""

Lily nodded.

Then she looked toward the staircase.

"Can I go see Ethan and Noah?""

"Of course.""

She went upstairs.

Marcus watched her go.

Then he turned toward Elaine.

"That's what this has done. A little girl is asking whether she can keep her own toys if she refuses to leave her home.""

Elaine looked away.

For once, she had nothing to say.

At 11:03, Rebecca received another email.

She read it silently.

Then she turned the laptop toward Marcus.

It was from the boutique's accountant.

Attached was a bank transaction report.

There were repeated transfers from the joint household account to Vanessa's business.

Some were labeled inventory.

Others were labeled operating expenses.

But one payment stood out.

A transfer of $42,000.

The description read:

*LILY TRUST — TEMPORARY HOLDING.*

Marcus looked at the date.

It was three weeks earlier.

The same week Vanessa had contacted Nora Bennett.

He stared at the screen.

"She moved money from the trust?""

Rebecca shook her head.

"We don't know that yet. This appears to be a transfer from the household account, not the trust itself. We need the source account and supporting records.""

Marcus looked toward the stairs.

Vanessa was standing at the top.

She had heard enough.

"Marcus," she said quietly.

He turned.

"Where did that forty-two thousand dollars go?""

Vanessa gripped the railing.

Then she looked at Elaine.

And Elaine made a tiny movement with her head.

A warning.

A plea.

Marcus saw it.

He looked back at his wife.

"Vanessa, answer me.""

Her voice trembled.

"I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

She swallowed.

"The money wasn't for the house.""

"Where did it go?""

Vanessa looked at the accountant's report.

Then she whispered:

"It was supposed to cover the business debt.""

Marcus stared at her.

"Whose money was it?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Rebecca closed the laptop.

"We need to stop this conversation until we've obtained the complete records.""

But Marcus already understood something important.

The property sale had not been the only financial scheme.

There were missing funds.

And the reference to Lily's trust was not an innocent accounting mistake.

Then Vanessa said something that changed the entire room.

"Your wife didn't leave Lily as much money as you think.""

Marcus froze.

"What?""

Vanessa looked at Elaine.

May you like

Elaine's face drained of color.

And for the first time, Marcus wondered whether the money Olivia had carefully protected for their daughter had been targeted long before the birthday photograph.
