Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth My Mother Left Behind

I didn’t scream.

I wanted to.

Every part of me wanted to pull away, run, and hide.

But I knew that voice.

Even though I had never met the person behind it.

My mother had described him.

Not his name.

Not his face.

Only one thing.

If you ever hear his voice, Lily, listen carefully. He is the one person who never stopped trying to bring me home.

I turned slowly.

The darkness inside the mansion made everything unclear.

The broken windows.

The scattered glass.

The frightened voices.

But the person standing behind me wasn’t a stranger.

It was Daniel.

His hand was on my shoulder.

“Stay close to me.””

I exhaled.

For a moment, I forgot how scared I was.

Then I remembered.

My mother.

“Where is she?””

Daniel looked at me.

And something in his eyes changed.

Hope.

Pain.

Regret.

“Lily…”

“Where is my mom?””

He looked toward the hallway.

“She’s close.””

My heart jumped.

“Close?””

“Yes.””

“Then take me to her.””

Before Daniel could answer, another voice cut through the darkness.

“Don’t.””

Everyone turned.

Arthur stood near the center of the room.

His face was pale.

His hands were shaking.

“Daniel.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

Arthur stared at me.

Then at the envelope.

Then at the key.

“I need to tell Lily something.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Not now.””

“It has to be now.””

The urgency in Arthur’s voice stopped everyone.

Even Richard.

Even Victoria.

Arthur took a slow breath.

“I knew Michael changed the will.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Daniel looked shocked.

“You knew?””

Arthur nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell Emma?””

Arthur looked devastated.

“Because I thought I was protecting the family.””

The words hung in the air.

The same excuse everyone used.

Protection.

Always protection.

I looked at him.

“But you weren’t protecting me.””

“No.””

Arthur’s voice cracked.

“I was protecting a name.””

Silence.

A name.

The Whitmore name.

A name that had mattered more than people.

More than my father.

More than my mother.

More than me.

Arthur looked at me.

“Your father came to me the night before he died.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He told me he had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Arthur looked toward Richard.

“Proof that Richard was using the foundation to control the family.””

Richard laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

Arthur ignored him.

“Michael wanted to expose everything.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“And you stopped him.””

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The admission shocked everyone.

Even me.

“You?””

My voice was small.

“You knew?””

Arthur looked at me.

“I knew he was in danger.””

“Then why didn’t you help him?””

The old man looked away.

“Because I was afraid.””

The answer was honest.

And somehow that made it worse.

He wasn’t a monster.

He was a person who made a terrible choice.

My mother always said the most dangerous people weren’t always the ones who hated you.

Sometimes they were the ones who loved you and stayed silent.

Arthur whispered:

“I thought if Michael disappeared, the scandal would disappear too.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You let him die.””

“I know.””

The room went quiet.

Then Richard smiled.

“Finally.””

Everyone looked at him.

“The truth comes out.””

Arthur turned.

“You murdered him.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“But I did something worse.””

My skin went cold.

“What?””

Richard stepped closer.

“I made everyone believe the wrong person was responsible.””

Victoria suddenly spoke.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stood near the doorway.

The confident socialite was gone.

She looked exhausted.

Broken.

“I can’t listen to this anymore.””

Daniel stared.

“Then tell the truth.””

Victoria looked at him.

“I loved him.””

Nobody spoke.

She looked at me.

“Your father.””

The words hurt in a strange way.

Because I had spent my whole life imagining someone who wasn’t there.

And now, everyone had a story about him.

“He was supposed to marry me.””

Her voice shook.

“But then he met Emma.””

I waited.

I expected hatred.

Instead, I saw grief.

“I hated her.””

Victoria swallowed.

“I did.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“But?””

“But she loved him.””

A tear appeared in Victoria’s eye.

“And he loved her.””

The room became silent.

“I spent years blaming Emma because it was easier than accepting Michael chose someone else.””

She looked at me.

“I was wrong.””

Nobody expected those words.

Especially not from her.

Victoria looked toward Richard.

“But I never killed him.””

Richard smiled.

“Of course not.””

Victoria turned.

“You used me.””

The smile disappeared.

“I used everyone.””

That sentence changed everything.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is Emma?””

Richard looked at him.

“You still think finding her fixes everything.””

“Yes.””

“You’re wrong.””

Richard reached into his coat.

Everyone reacted immediately.

Daniel moved.

But Richard didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a small device.

A recording.

He pressed a button.

My mother’s voice filled the ruined mansion.

“Lily.””

I stopped breathing.

Her voice.

After three months.

Her real voice.

Not a memory.

Not a dream.

A recording.

“If you are hearing this, it means you found the truth.””

My eyes filled.

“First, I need you to know something.””

The recording crackled.

“I never wanted you involved.””

I covered my mouth.

“I wanted you to have a normal life.””

A pause.

“But I knew the Whitmore secrets would eventually find you.””

Everyone listened.

Even Richard.

“Michael wasn’t killed because of money.””

A chill moved through me.

“He was killed because he found out the truth about who he was.””

Arthur frowned.

“What?””

My mother continued.

“Michael was not only a Whitmore heir.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What is she saying?””

The recording continued.

“He was the son of the original founder.””

Everyone froze.

Richard’s expression changed.

“The founder had another child.””

Arthur whispered:

“No…”

My mother’s voice continued.

“And that child’s bloodline was hidden.””

I looked down.

My heart pounded.

“Michael discovered that the Whitmore family had erased an entire branch of the family tree.””

Daniel looked at me.

“And Lily…”

The recording continued.

“You are the last person carrying that bloodline.””

Silence.

My mother’s voice softened.

“Lily, if you are listening to this, I’m sorry.””

A tear fell down my face.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you the way I promised.””

I closed my eyes.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t be there when you needed me.””

The recording paused.

Then:

“But I need you to understand something.””

The room became completely still.

“I didn’t disappear because I was afraid.””

A pause.

“I disappeared because I found the person who killed your father.””

Everyone looked at each other.

Then my mother said:

“And I stayed hidden because that person was someone I loved.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Who?””

Richard smiled.

But not proudly.

Almost sadly.

Because he knew the answer.

Everyone looked around.

Waiting.

The device crackled again.

One final sentence played.

A sentence my mother had saved for the end.

“If you want to find me, Lily…”

The voice became softer.

“Don’t look for the person who hated us.””

My heart stopped.

“Look for the person who loved us enough to betray us.””

The recording ended.

And slowly…

Everyone turned toward one person.

Not Richard.

Not Victoria.

Not Arthur.

Daniel.

Because my mother’s final warning wasn’t about an enemy.

It was about the man standing closest to me.

The man she told me to trust.

Daniel Langford looked at the floor.

May you like

And for the first time…

He looked guilty.
