Amused

Chapter 8: The Betrayal I Never Saw Coming

Her name was Evelyn.

My best friend for fifteen years.

The woman who brought me soup after my first chemotherapy treatment.

The woman who sat beside me when I cried.

The woman who told me I was strong.

And now her signature was sitting on a fraudulent document.

I couldn’t understand it.

My brain refused to accept it.

“No,” I whispered.

James looked at me.

“Mom?””

I shook my head.

“That’s not possible.””

The officer watched me carefully.

“Mrs. Carter, are you saying Evelyn Price could not have witnessed this?””

“She wouldn’t do this.””

The words came automatically.

Because sometimes loyalty survives longer than logic.

The officer handed the document back.

“We’ll need to interview everyone involved.””

Everyone.

The word felt heavy.

Because suddenly everyone around me was a question mark.

Brielle.

Daniel.

Evelyn.

Even myself.

Had I ignored signs?

Had I believed people because I needed them to be good?

The officer left with the paperwork.

The room stayed silent.

Then James asked:

“Mom, did Evelyn have access to your documents?””

I looked down.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“She helped me organize my medical paperwork.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“That’s how.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She wasn’t helping you.””

My stomach tightened.

“You knew?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I suspected.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I wasn’t sure.””

I laughed sadly.

“Everyone knew something except me.””

Nobody answered.

Because it was true.

James walked over.

“Brielle, did Evelyn introduce you to Victor?””

My daughter looked down.

“Yes.””

The pieces started falling into place.

Evelyn.

Victor.

Brielle.

The house.

The fake documents.

My chest felt heavy.

“How long?””

Brielle looked confused.

“What?””

“How long have you all been planning this?””

She cried.

“Mom, I didn’t want it to hurt you.””

I looked at her.

“You keep saying that.””

My voice broke.

“But every decision you made hurt me.””

She covered her face.

“I know.””

For the first time that night…

She sounded like she meant it.

James noticed too.

But he didn’t move toward her.

He stayed where he was.

Because forgiveness and trust were different things.

A knock came from the door.

Everyone turned.

A staff member stood there.

“Mrs. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“There’s someone asking for you.””

“Who?””

The woman looked nervous.

“Evelyn Price.””

The air disappeared from the room.

Brielle stood.

“No.””

James looked at her.

“You know she’s here?””

Brielle shook her head quickly.

“No.””

Daniel looked toward the door.

“Let her in.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because you deserve the truth.””

The door opened.

Evelyn walked in.

She looked nothing like the woman I knew.

Her hair was messy.

Her face was pale.

She looked terrified.

The second she saw me, she started crying.

“Margaret…”

I stepped back.

“Don’t.””

The word surprised even me.

She stopped.

“I don’t understand.””

“No.””

I looked at the woman who had held my hand through my darkest days.

“You don’t get to say that.””

She cried harder.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

My voice rose.

“You helped someone steal my home.””

She looked down.

“I was trying to help Brielle.””

James stepped forward.

“You helped her commit fraud.””

“No.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I thought I was helping her fix things.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“That’s what everyone says.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“Then tell us.””

She looked at Brielle.

Then at me.

And whispered:

“Your daughter didn’t ask me for money.””

Everyone froze.

“What did she ask for?”” I asked.

Evelyn swallowed.

“She asked me to convince you to forgive her.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She said she knew she had made mistakes.””

Brielle looked up.

“Mom…”

Evelyn continued.

“But Victor found out.””

The room became silent.

“He threatened Brielle.””

James asked:

“With what?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“With proof that he had been manipulating her for months.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Manipulating?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Victor wasn’t just lending money.””

She looked terrified.

“He was planning something much bigger.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What?””

Evelyn’s voice dropped.

“He wanted the house because it sits on valuable land.””

The lawyer immediately looked up.

“What land?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“The development project.””

Everyone went still.

James frowned.

“What development project?””

The lawyer slowly opened his folder.

Then his face changed.

“Wait.””

He pulled out another document.

A map.

He spread it across the table.

I recognized my street.

My neighborhood.

The homes around mine.

The lawyer pointed to a highlighted area.

“Your property is part of a future commercial development zone.””

My hands went cold.

“How much is it worth?””

He looked at me.

“Much more than anyone realized.””

Daniel whispered:

“That’s why he wanted it.””

Then Evelyn said something that made everyone freeze.

“Victor never cared about the house.””

May you like

She looked at me.

“He cared about what was underneath it.””
