Chapter 5: The Man Behind The Lie

The name on the paper was enough to bring back two decades of pain.

Daniel.

Brielle’s father.

The man who walked away.

The man who left me alone with a twelve-year-old daughter and a mountain of bills.

I had spent years telling myself I was over him.

But seeing his name again made my hands shake.

“What does this mean?”” James asked.

I couldn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

The lawyer looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, you need to read this.””

I unfolded the attached letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

Too familiar.

My heart raced as I read.

“Margaret,

If you are reading this, then something has happened that I feared.

Brielle came to see me six months ago.

She told me she needed money.

She told me she planned to convince you to sign over the house.

I refused to help her.

But I know my daughter.

She has always been good at making people believe what she wants them to believe.

Please understand something.

I am not writing this because I am a good father.

I am writing this because I finally realized the damage I caused.””

I stopped reading.

My eyes burned.

Brielle was crying.

But I couldn’t tell if she was sorry.

Or afraid.

James took a step toward her.

“You knew he wrote this?””

“No.””

“Then why did you hide the invitation?””

She didn’t answer.

I looked at my daughter.

“Why?””

Her face collapsed.

“Because I knew.””

“Knew what?””

She swallowed.

“I knew Dad left evidence.””

The room became silent.

James stared.

“You knew your father was trying to stop this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why continue?””

Brielle covered her face.

“Because I needed the money.””

There it was.

The truth.

Simple.

Ugly.

Painful.

“How much?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

“What?””

“How much did you need?””

Her voice became smaller.

“Three hundred thousand.””

James looked shocked.

“For what?””

She didn’t respond.

Then her phone rang.

She looked at it.

And froze.

James noticed.

“Who is calling?””

Nobody moved.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, I said:

“Answer it.””

Brielle shook her head.

“Mom…”

“Answer it.””

Slowly, she picked up.

“Hello?””

Her face changed.

“What?””

A pause.

“No, I told you I would get it.””

Another pause.

Then:

“You can’t do that.””

James moved closer.

“Put it on speaker.””

“No!””

That reaction told us everything.

James took the phone from her hand.

A man’s voice came through.

“Brielle? Did you get your mother to sign?””

The blood drained from my face.

James looked at me.

Then at the phone.

“Who is this?””

Silence.

Then the voice answered.

“Who the hell is this?””

James’s expression hardened.

“You’re speaking to Brielle’s husband.””

The man laughed.

“Well, then you should know your wife promised us the house.””

My knees nearly gave out.

James tightened his grip on the phone.

“Who are you?””

Another silence.

Then the man said:

“Ask Brielle who she borrowed money from.””

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Brielle started crying.

James looked at her.

“Who did you owe?””

She whispered:

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

James’s voice was cold.

“You made a choice.””

I looked at my daughter.

The child I raised.

The child I protected.

The child I loved more than myself.

And for the first time, I realized something terrifying.

The wedding wasn’t where Brielle’s betrayal began.

It was where she thought she could finally hide it.

Then the lawyer’s phone buzzed.

He checked the message.

His face changed.

“Mrs. Carter…”

“What?””

He slowly looked up.

“The person who called just now…”

May you like

He swallowed.

“He’s already outside.””
