Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Locked Door

Officer Brooks made three calls in quick succession.

The first was to the investigator handling Rebecca Cole's interview.

The second was to the local police department.

The third was to someone whose name she didn't say aloud.

When she finished, she placed her phone on the table.

“Thomas Bell is being located for questioning.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He wouldn't do this.””

Officer Brooks looked at her.

“You recognized his voice.””

“Yes, but—”

“And the message was sent from your mother's phone.””

“My mother could have recorded him without telling him!””

“That's possible. It's also possible that the recording captures a conversation between two people discussing a plan. We need to establish which explanation is accurate.””

Vanessa pressed her hands against her cheeks.

“He's my stepfather. He's been part of my life since I was twelve.””

I stared at her.

“And he wanted my daughter silenced.””

“I don't know that.””

“You heard the recording.””

“I heard a conversation taken out of context!””

Danielle stood beside the coffee table.

“What context could make that sentence acceptable?””

Vanessa had no answer.

I looked at Officer Brooks.

“Can you tell whether the video was recorded on Friday?””

“The metadata is consistent with Friday afternoon, but we're verifying it against the hotel system and other records.””

“Then verify it.””

My voice sounded strange to my own ears.

Not angry.

Not desperate.

Empty.

I had spent the last several hours discovering new reasons to hate the weekend in Savannah. Every memory had become contaminated: the restaurant, the riverfront, the hotel room, the photographs Vanessa had taken while I smiled for a camera.

I'd thought I was beginning a new life.

All along, people around me had been making decisions that could determine whether my daughter received the treatment she needed.

And I had known nothing.

No.

That wasn't entirely true.

I'd known Danielle was calling.

I'd known she was frightened.

I'd known something was wrong, and I'd chosen not to investigate because I was afraid of what it might cost me.

The distinction mattered.

I could not let anyone else's cruelty become an excuse for my own.

Danielle sat down slowly.

“Thomas always hated me,” she said.

Vanessa looked up.

“He didn't hate you.””

“He told me I had ruined his family.””

Danielle rubbed her hands together.

“After Ethan died, Rebecca blamed me for keeping Lily away from him. Thomas said I should have allowed Rebecca to be part of Lily's life.””

“Why didn't you?”” I asked.

“Because Rebecca wanted custody.””

Danielle's voice trembled.

“She told me that if I didn't let her see Lily, she'd make sure I regretted it. I thought she was angry. I didn't believe she'd actually do anything.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“My mother was grieving. She wasn't thinking clearly.””

“Grief doesn't give someone the right to threaten a child,” Danielle replied.

Vanessa looked away.

I sat opposite my wife.

“Why didn't you tell me about the threats?””

Danielle's expression tightened.

“Because I was afraid you'd discover the truth about Ethan.””

“You thought I'd leave?””

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“You were willing to handle all of this alone rather than trust me with the truth?””

“I know how that sounds.””

“Do you?””

She lowered her head.

“I was afraid that if I told you, you'd look at Lily differently.””

I glanced toward the photograph on the mantel.

Lily stood between us in her yellow sundress, holding the Father's Day card she'd made with purple crayon.

My daddy is my favorite superhero.

I remembered the day she'd given it to me.

I'd been late getting home from work. She'd waited by the window, holding the card behind her back.

When I walked through the door, she ran into my arms and shouted, "You came back!""

I'd laughed and told her I always would.

Now the memory hurt so much that I had to look away.

“I did look at her differently,” I whispered.

Danielle lifted her head.

I swallowed.

“Not because she wasn't biologically mine. Because she was the person I loved most in the world, and I kept behaving as if I had all the time in the world to prove it.””

Danielle began to cry.

For a moment, we sat in silence.

Then Officer Brooks received an update.

She read it twice before speaking.

“Thomas Bell has been located.””

Vanessa stood.

“Where?””

“At his residence in Charleston.””

“Is he coming here?””

“He's being interviewed by officers in his area.””

Vanessa looked relieved.

Then Officer Brooks continued.

“He has denied participating in any plan to interfere with Lily's treatment.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Of course he has.””

“He claims the recording was edited.””

Vanessa nodded quickly.

“That's what I said!””

Officer Brooks held up a hand.

“The original file is being preserved and analyzed. We won't determine what happened based on one person's account.””

I walked toward the kitchen.

I needed water.

I needed air.

I needed something ordinary enough to remind me I was still inside my own house.

As I reached for a glass, I noticed the calendar on the refrigerator.

Lily had covered the month with stickers.

A star for every day she remembered to feed her fish.

A purple heart on the date of her school concert.

A yellow sun on the day I'd promised to take her to the aquarium.

The concert had been last month.

I hadn't attended.

I'd told Danielle a meeting had run late.

In truth, I'd been having dinner with Vanessa.

Lily had stood on the stage in a white dress and searched the audience for me.

Danielle had told me later that she'd smiled anyway.

She'd said Lily was brave.

I had thanked her and gone back to my laptop.

I gripped the counter until my fingers hurt.

Behind me, Danielle entered the kitchen.

She stood a few feet away.

“Marcus?””

I didn't turn.

“I don't know how to live in this house without her.””

Her voice broke.

I closed my eyes.

“Neither do I.””

She moved closer, then stopped.

For a moment, I thought she might touch my shoulder.

Instead, she said, “I should have told you about Ethan.””

I turned.

“Yes.””

“I should have trusted you.””

“Yes.””

She nodded, accepting the words without trying to defend herself.

“And you should have answered your phone.””

My throat tightened.

“Yes.””

She looked at me for a long moment.

“Do you hate me?””

I stared at her.

I thought about the years we'd shared, the child we'd raised, the secrets we'd hidden, and the life we'd destroyed through fear and selfishness.

“No,” I said finally.

“But I don't know how to trust you right now.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

“I don't know how to trust anyone.””

Her eyes filled.

“Neither do I.””

We stood in the kitchen, separated by a few feet and years of things we'd never said.

Then Danielle reached into her cardigan pocket and removed a small envelope.

“I found this in Lily's desk,” she whispered.

My heart lurched.

“What is it?””

“A letter she wrote last month. She told me she wanted to give it to you when you came home from Savannah.””

I stared at the envelope.

My name was written across the front in purple crayon.

The handwriting was uneven, but unmistakably hers.

I took it with trembling fingers.

“Why didn't you give it to me before?””

“I couldn't.””

She looked down.

“I thought I'd never be able to say the words out loud.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a sheet of lined paper folded into quarters.

Dear Daddy,

I know you are busy. Mommy says grown-ups have lots of things to do.

Sometimes I think you are busy because I am not a baby anymore.

I want you to know I still need you.

When I am big, I want to be a doctor because doctors help people when they are scared.

If you ever get scared, I will help you too.

You don't have to be a superhero all the time.

You just have to come home.

Love, Lily.

I couldn't see the last line through my tears.

I folded the letter carefully and pressed it against my chest.

For several seconds, I couldn't make a sound.

Then I began to sob.

Danielle stood beside me, crying quietly.

Neither of us tried to comfort the other.

We didn't deserve comfort from each other yet.

We only deserved to feel what we'd done.

When I finally looked up, Officer Brooks was standing in the doorway.

“Mr. Reed, I need to ask you something about the hotel room.””

I wiped my face.

“What?””

“The video shows Rebecca accessing your phone, but there's another detail we haven't explained.””

She held out her phone.

The recording showed Rebecca standing beside the desk.

In the reflection of the window, another figure was visible.

Someone standing behind the camera.

I leaned closer.

“Who is that?””

Officer Brooks enlarged the image.

The figure wore a dark jacket and stood near the bathroom door.

I recognized the watch first.

A silver watch with a black face.

I'd seen it thousands of times.

Thomas Bell wore one in every family photograph Vanessa had ever shown me.

My stomach dropped.

“He was there.””

Officer Brooks nodded.

“That's our current assessment.””

Vanessa approached the doorway.

“No. That's impossible.””

I turned toward her.

“You said he was in Charleston.””

“He was supposed to be!””

Officer Brooks continued.

“The recording suggests Thomas was in the hotel room while Rebecca accessed your phone. We're also examining whether he was involved in the hospital account activity.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He wouldn't risk everything for my mother.””

Danielle looked at her.

“Why not? He already risked my daughter's life.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Then she whispered, “There's something else you need to know.””

I looked at her.

She seemed to struggle for breath.

“My mother didn't just want Marcus to leave Danielle.””

“Then what did she want?”” Officer Brooks asked.

Vanessa looked at my wife.

“She wanted Lily's medical records because she believed they proved Ethan had been lied to.””

Danielle went pale.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She told Thomas that if they could prove you had concealed the truth about Ethan's paternity, they could challenge the decisions you made about Lily's treatment.””

I stared at her.

“They wanted control over my daughter.””

Vanessa nodded.

“They believed they had a legal claim to her.””

Danielle shook her head.

“Lily was my daughter. I raised her. I made every decision for her.””

“And Marcus was her father,” I said.

My voice broke.

“Whether or not our DNA matched.””

Officer Brooks nodded slowly.

“That's something the legal authorities would have to evaluate. But we still need to establish whether anyone deliberately interfered with Lily's medical care.””

Vanessa looked down.

“My mother said the appointment had to be canceled until Danielle told the truth.””

Danielle gripped the doorframe.

“Until I told the truth?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She believed the doctors shouldn't treat Lily until the family situation was resolved.””

I stared at her.

“So she used my daughter's life as leverage.””

Vanessa began to cry.

“Yes.””

The admission settled over us.

There was no defense left.

No misunderstanding.

No excuse about grief or desperation.

Rebecca had believed she could force Danielle to surrender control by threatening the one thing Danielle could not bear to lose.

And Thomas had apparently helped her.

Officer Brooks's phone rang.

She answered, listened, then looked directly at me.

“The investigators have recovered a second audio recording.””

My heart pounded.

“From the phone in the suitcase?””

“Yes.””

“What does it contain?””

She hesitated.

“A conversation between Rebecca and Thomas recorded before the hotel footage.””

I looked at Danielle.

She had gone completely still.

Officer Brooks pressed play.

Rebecca's voice emerged first.

“Once the appointment is canceled, Danielle will have to come to us.””

Thomas replied, “And if she doesn't?””

Rebecca answered without hesitation.

“Then Marcus will learn who Lily's father really was, and he'll leave her. Either way, Danielle loses everything.””

A pause followed.

Then Thomas asked, “What about the girl?””

Rebecca's voice softened.

“She's the only piece of Ethan we have left.””

Thomas replied, “That's not what I asked.””

Silence.

Then Rebecca spoke again.

“If the girl can't be saved, Danielle will have no choice but to let us make the decisions.””

The recording ended.

Danielle staggered backward.

I caught her before she fell.

For the first time that evening, she didn't push me away.

She clutched my arm and sobbed into my shoulder.

I held her because she was Lily's mother.

Because she was grieving.

Because whatever had happened between us, neither of us could bear the weight of that recording alone.

Officer Brooks lowered her phone.

“We have enough to pursue this further. I'm going to make sure the investigators have the original file.””

I looked at her.

“Will they be charged?””

“That's not my decision, and we need to complete the investigation. But we will follow the evidence.””

I nodded.

It wasn't enough.

Nothing could be enough.

But it was the only answer she could honestly give me.

A few minutes later, Daniel Price returned with a final update.

“The hospital has confirmed that the appointment was canceled using Rebecca's account. They also recovered a message sent to Thomas shortly afterward.””

Officer Brooks read the message aloud.

She won't get treatment until Danielle gives us what we want.

Danielle covered her face.

I held her tighter.

Then another notification appeared on the investigator's screen.

A new message had arrived from Thomas Bell's phone.

It was addressed to Rebecca.

The plan failed. Marcus knows about Ethan. We need to move before he finds the original file.

I stared at the words.

“What original file?””

Officer Brooks's expression sharpened.

Daniel Price looked down at his laptop.

“There's one more encrypted file on the second phone. We haven't opened it yet.””

Vanessa took a step backward.

“No.””

I turned toward her.

“What is it?””

She shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks.

“My mother said she destroyed it.””

Officer Brooks looked at Daniel.

“Can you recover it?””

“I'm working on it.””

The screen flickered.

A folder appeared.

Inside was a single video file.

The filename consisted of a date and four words.

*LILY — FRIDAY — FINAL MESSAGE.*

I stopped breathing.

Danielle clutched my arm.

Officer Brooks looked at both of us.

“Before we play this, I need you to understand that we don't know what it contains.””

I nodded.

“Play it.””

Daniel clicked the file.

The screen went black.

Then Lily's face appeared.

She was sitting in a hotel room, her yellow backpack beside her.

Her eyes were red, and she was holding a folded piece of paper.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Daddy,” she whispered, “if you ever see this, please know I tried to tell you.””

The video froze.

A message appeared across the screen.

*FILE CORRUPTED — REMAINING AUDIO AVAILABLE.*

Daniel looked at Officer Brooks.

“There's an audio track. I can try to recover it.””

I could barely stand.

“Please.””

The audio crackled.

Then Lily's voice returned.

“Daddy, I know you didn't send those messages.””

I covered my mouth.

“I know because I saw who took your phone.””

A pause.

Then she whispered something that made Danielle collapse against me.

“And Daddy, there's something Mommy doesn't know.””

The recording ended.

I stared at the black screen.

“What doesn't Danielle know?”” I whispered.

Daniel Price looked at the laptop.

“The rest of the file may contain the answer.””

Officer Brooks nodded.

“Recover it.””

As Daniel worked, another notification appeared.

A message from an unknown number.

It contained only one sentence.

If you want to know what Lily discovered, ask Marcus what happened the night she was born.

Danielle slowly lifted her head.

Then she looked at me.

Her expression was filled with a fear I had never seen before.

“Marcus,” she whispered, “what happened the night Lily was born?””

I stared at my wife.

May you like

And for the first time since I'd walked through our front door, I realized there might be something in my own past that I had forgotten.

Something important enough that someone had killed to keep it hidden.
