Chapter 8: The Truth Vanessa Was Afraid Of
The knocking became louder.
Daniel looked at me.
“What is happening?””
Vanessa backed away from the door.
“Please.””
I studied her.
A week ago, I would have never believed her.
But fear is difficult to fake.
Especially when someone thinks they are about to lose their life.
Not just their reputation.
“Who is outside?”” I asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s a lie.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know who.””
The pounding stopped.
For one terrifying second, the house became silent.
Then a voice came from the other side.
“Vanessa.””
Daniel froze.
He recognized it.
“Richard.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“He told me he would protect me.””
My anger rose.
“You worked with him.””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“I did.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Why should we believe anything you say?””
She looked down.
“Because I recorded him.””
That caught my attention.
“What?””
Vanessa reached into her purse.
“I knew Richard was dangerous.””
Daniel laughed.
“So you knew he was dangerous after helping him?””
She flinched.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised us.
“I thought I could control him.””
I shook my head.
“You thought you could use him.””
“Yes.””
“And he used you instead.””
Vanessa nodded.
A long silence followed.
Then I unlocked the door.
Daniel looked shocked.
“Mom?””
“I want answers.””
Richard stood outside.
His expression changed when he saw Vanessa inside.
“You.””
Vanessa stepped back.
Richard smiled coldly.
“You ruined everything.””
Daniel moved between them.
“You’re done.””
Richard laughed.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
I stepped forward.
“I know exactly what I’m dealing with.””
Richard looked at me.
“Do you?””
He smiled.
“Your foundation is built on paperwork.””
“No.””
I looked directly at him.
“It’s built on people.””
His expression hardened.
For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.
Because he knew something.
He knew I was not afraid.
The next morning, Vanessa gave us the recording.
We listened together.
Richard’s voice filled the room.
“You marry Daniel. You gain access.””
Vanessa’s voice answered.
“And then?””
“You convince him to change the foundation structure.””
“And Eleanor?””
A pause.
Then Richard said:
“She becomes irrelevant.””
Daniel looked away.
That sentence hurt him.
Not because it was cruel.
Because it confirmed everything.
But then Richard said something none of us expected.
“The real problem is the trust agreement.””
Vanessa asked:
“What about it?””
Richard replied:
“If Eleanor dies before changing it, everything transfers exactly as written.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at me.
“Mom.””
I understood.
This was no longer about money.
It was about removing me.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I didn’t know.””
I looked at her.
“But you were willing to help.””
She nodded slowly.
“I was.””
For the first time, she didn’t defend herself.
She admitted it.
That mattered.
But it didn’t erase what she did.
Later that day, the police began investigating.
Richard’s accounts were frozen.
The board cooperated.
And Vanessa disappeared.
I thought that was the end.
Until three days later, I received a letter.
No return address.
No signature.
Inside was a copy of my original trust agreement.
The missing document.
On the final page, someone had written a message.
*The person you trusted most was never Richard.*
I stared at the words.
Then I noticed something underneath.
A second name.
May you like
A name that made my hands shake.
Because it belonged to someone I loved.
