Chapter 6: The Name Hidden in the Files
The name on the document was one I had never expected to see.
For several seconds, I simply stared at the signature at the bottom of the page.
My hands went cold.
Because the person who had helped Vanessa get close to my family was not a stranger.
It was someone I had trusted for years.
The morning after Rosa’s warning, I arrived at the foundation before sunrise.
The city was still quiet. The streets outside my office were covered in a thin layer of rain, and the glass walls of the building reflected a woman who looked much older than she had a week ago.
Not because of my age.
Because betrayal changes the way you see everything.
I walked into the conference room where Daniel was waiting.
He looked exhausted.
He had barely slept.
“Mom,” he said quietly.
I placed the folder on the table.
“Rosa found something.””
Daniel immediately sat up.
“What?””
I opened the folder.
Inside were copies of financial reports, emails, and internal documents.
“Vanessa wasn’t just trying to marry you.””
Daniel stared at the papers.
“She was investigating the foundation.””
His face hardened.
“For what?””
I slid one document toward him.
“Control.””
He read silently.
Then his expression changed.
“What is this?””
“A proposal to restructure the foundation after the wedding.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Who approved this?””
“That’s what we need to find out.””
A knock interrupted us.
The door opened.
And the person standing there made my heart sink.
“Eleanor?””
I looked up.
“Richard.””
Richard Hayes had been my foundation’s legal advisor for almost fifteen years.
He was the man who helped me create the foundation after my husband died.
He knew every account.
Every contract.
Every weakness.
He smiled politely.
“I heard there was some confusion regarding the financial documents.””
Daniel stood.
“Confusion?””
Richard looked between us.
“Daniel, I’m sure your mother is upset after everything with Vanessa.””
I watched him carefully.
The way he avoided my eyes.
The way his hand tightened around his briefcase.
“You knew,” I said.
His smile disappeared.
“Knew what?””
“That Vanessa was planning to take control.””
Silence.
Then Richard sighed.
“Eleanor, you’re making this emotional.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“No. Answer the question.””
Richard looked at him.
“You don’t understand the situation.””
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“Then explain it.””
Richard didn’t.
And that was his answer.
After he left, Daniel looked at me.
“Mom.””
“Yes?””
“There’s more.””
I knew by his tone.
“What?””
He opened his laptop.
“I checked Vanessa’s phone records.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“Because after the wedding was canceled, she didn’t call her friends.””
He turned the screen toward me.
“She called Richard.””
I stared at the name.
The betrayal felt different this time.
Vanessa had been a mistake.
A painful one.
But Richard?
Richard had been family.
That evening, we returned home.
The house felt different.
The rooms that once held laughter now felt like they were filled with secrets.
As I walked into my office, I noticed something strange.
My desk drawer was slightly open.
I always locked it.
Always.
I rushed toward it.
Inside were my private foundation documents.
But one folder was missing.
The folder containing the original trust agreement.
Daniel saw my expression.
“What happened?””
I looked at the empty space.
“The document Vanessa needs.””
He frowned.
“What document?””
I turned toward him.
“The one that controls everything.””
Before he could answer, my phone buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
I opened it.
My blood froze.
It was a photograph.
A photograph of the missing folder.
May you like
And underneath it were six words:
*You should have stayed invisible.*
