Chapter 8: My Father Finally Confessed

Detective Miller motioned for me to put the call on speaker.
I did.
"Daniel Bennett," she said.
"This is Detective Rebecca Miller. I need you to explain your last statement.""
My father went silent.
Then he asked:
"Is Olivia with you?""
"Yes.""
"Good.""
His voice trembled.
"I think it's time she knew everything.""
Detective Miller pulled a notebook closer.
"Start with the night Claire died.""
Dad exhaled.
"I'll tell you. But I need to explain what happened before that.""
I sat down.
For the first time, my father wasn't asking me to stop asking questions.
He was preparing to answer them.
"Three years ago, my company was almost bankrupt," he began.
"We had lost two major contracts. The bank was threatening to seize our assets. I was desperate.""
I looked at the table.
"Mom gave you money.""
"Yes.""
"Six million dollars.""
He paused.
"More than that, eventually.""
Detective Miller wrote something down.
Dad continued.
"Claire believed in me. She wanted me to succeed. She used part of her inheritance to keep the business alive.""
"Then Vanessa appeared," I said.
"Yes.""
He took a breath.
"Vanessa was working as a financial consultant for one of our investors. She introduced herself at a business meeting. She was charming, confident, and very good at making people feel important.""
I stared at the wall.
"Did you have an affair?""
Silence.
Then he answered.
"Yes.""
My stomach twisted.
"While Mom was sick?""
"Before she became seriously ill.""
"Did she know?""
"Eventually.""
He sounded ashamed.
"Claire discovered messages between us. She confronted me. I told her it was over.""
"Was it?""
"No.""
I closed my eyes.
Dad continued.
"Vanessa told me she could help save the company. She said she had investors who would provide additional funding. But she needed access to certain accounts.""
"Your private accounts?""
"Yes.""
"Did you give it to her?""
"At first, I thought she was moving money for legitimate business expenses.""
"How much?""
"I don't know exactly.""
Detective Miller interrupted.
"Mr. Bennett, are you saying your wife had unauthorized access to company and trust funds?""
"Yes.""
"Did you report it?""
"No.""
"Why?""
My father hesitated.
"Because I discovered that some of the transfers had been approved using my signature.""
I frowned.
"You signed them?""
"Some. Not all.""
"Who signed the others?""
He didn't answer.
Detective Miller leaned forward.
"Mr. Bennett?""
"Vanessa.""
I looked at the detective.
She wrote something down.
Dad continued.
"Claire found the discrepancies. She confronted me two days before she died.""
I remembered the recording.
My mother asking him whether he had given Vanessa access to the trust.
"She knew everything," I whispered.
"Yes.""
"Then what happened that night?""
Dad took a shaky breath.
"Vanessa came to the house. She said she wanted to apologize to Claire. I thought it might finally end the conflict.""
"Why did you leave them alone?""
"Because Claire told me she wanted to speak with her privately.""
I stared at the phone.
"Mom didn't trust Vanessa.""
"I know that now.""
"How could you not know then?""
He didn't answer.
Detective Miller gestured for him to continue.
"At around nine-fifteen, I heard shouting. I came into the living room and found Claire on the floor.""
"Was she conscious?""
"Yes.""
"Was Vanessa there?""
"Yes.""
"Was she holding anything?""
Dad went quiet.
Then he said:
"A glass bottle.""
My fingers curled around the edge of the table.
"What bottle?""
"One of Claire's medication bottles.""
I felt sick.
Detective Miller immediately sat straighter.
"Did you see Vanessa strike Claire?""
"No.""
"Did you see how she was injured?""
"There was blood near her head.""
"Did you call emergency services?""
"Eventually.""
"Why did you wait?""
Dad began crying.
"Vanessa told me Claire had attacked her. She said she had pushed Claire away, and Claire had fallen.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did you believe her?""
"I wanted to.""
That answer hurt more than I expected.
He continued.
"Then Vanessa told me something. She said if I called the police, she would tell them about the financial fraud. She said she would claim I had ordered the transfers and that I had used Claire's illness to hide the money.""
"So you protected yourself.""
"I was scared.""
"You protected yourself instead of Mom.""
He began sobbing.
"Yes.""
Detective Miller waited until he could speak again.
"Mr. Bennett, you said Vanessa wasn't alone. Who else was there?""
Dad took a breath.
"Martin Hale.""
I looked up.
The family attorney.
The same man handling the trust transfer.
"Martin was at the house that night?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"He had come to collect some documents. Vanessa had asked him to prepare the financial restructuring.""
Detective Miller's expression hardened.
"Did he see Claire on the floor?""
"Yes.""
"Did he help?""
Dad hesitated.
"He told me not to call the police until we understood what had happened.""
My heart pounded.
"Why?""
"Because he said the situation could destroy all of us.""
Detective Miller looked at me.
Then she spoke into the phone.
"Mr. Bennett, I need you to come to the station immediately.""
"I will.""
"And do not contact Vanessa or Mr. Hale.""
"I understand.""
The call ended.
I stared at the detective.
"Are they going to arrest them?""
"Not without further evidence.""
"But the recordings—"
"Are important. So are the financial records. We need to establish exactly what happened.""
I nodded.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.
"Did my mother suffer?""
Detective Miller's expression softened.
"I can't answer that yet.""
I looked down.
"She asked Dad to protect me.""
The detective said nothing.
At 6:15 p.m., my father arrived at the station.
He looked as though he hadn't slept in days.
His shirt was wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot, and his hands shook when he sat across from me.
For a moment, I saw the man who used to tuck me into bed when I was little.
Then I remembered the eleven minutes.
I looked away.
"Olivia.""
I didn't answer.
He placed something on the table.
A small silver bracelet.
My mother's bracelet.
I recognized it immediately.
She had worn it every day.
"Where did you get that?""
"Vanessa left it in the house.""
I picked it up.
"Why do you have it?""
"Because I found it inside her suitcase.""
Detective Miller looked up.
"Which suitcase?""
"The one she left behind.""
"Where is she now?""
"I don't know.""
He rubbed his face.
"She packed clothes, jewelry, and several documents. But she left this.""
I turned the bracelet over.
There was a small engraving inside.
D + C. Forever.
I felt tears rise.
Dad watched me.
"Your mother loved you more than anything.""
I looked at him.
"Then why didn't you?""
His face crumpled.
"I did.""
"Not enough.""
He lowered his head.
I wanted to scream at him.
I wanted to ask why he had allowed Vanessa to take my mother's place, why he had believed her lies, why he had watched me suffer.
But I was tired.
So tired.
Detective Miller interrupted.
"Mr. Bennett, did Martin Hale know about the property transfer?""
"Yes.""
"Did he prepare the documents?""
"Yes.""
"Did he know Olivia hadn't signed the authorization?""
My father looked up.
"I don't know.""
Detective Miller slid a printed copy across the table.
"This is the authorization submitted yesterday.""
Dad examined it.
His face changed.
Then he turned it around.
"That's not Olivia's signature.""
"I know," the detective said.
Dad stared at the page.
"Martin prepared this?""
"According to the submission record.""
He closed his eyes.
"Then he's involved.""
Detective Miller nodded.
"We're looking into that.""
I looked at my father.
"There's something else you need to tell us.""
He swallowed.
"What?""
"Mom mentioned my grandfather. She said Vanessa had been giving him something.""
His face became pale.
Detective Miller leaned forward.
"Mr. Bennett?""
Dad looked at me.
"I never told you because I didn't have proof.""
"Tell us.""
He stared at his hands.
"Your grandfather's medical records showed that he had been prescribed medication for his heart. But shortly before he died, the dosage was changed.""
"By whom?""
"Martin.""
The room became silent.
"Why would Martin change his medication?""
"He claimed the doctor had authorized it.""
Detective Miller immediately wrote something down.
"Was that verified?""
"No.""
"Did you investigate?""
"I tried. But Vanessa told me that if I reopened the case, she would expose my financial involvement in the company.""
I stared at him.
"How long have you known?""
"Since shortly after Claire died.""
I stood.
"You knew someone might have killed Grandpa, and you did nothing?""
Dad covered his face.
"I was afraid.""
I stepped away from the table.
"You're always afraid.""
He looked up.
I continued.
"You were afraid of losing your company. Afraid of losing Vanessa. Afraid of being exposed. And while you were afraid, Mom died, Grandpa died, and I spent three years living with the person who destroyed our family.""
He started crying.
I couldn't look at him.
Detective Miller stood.
"Olivia, I think we should take a short break.""
I nodded.
As I walked toward the hallway, my father called after me.
"Sweetheart, please.""
I stopped.
He stood with both hands on the table.
"I know I don't deserve forgiveness.""
I turned around.
"You're right.""
Then I left.
At 8:30 p.m., Detective Miller received a call.
She listened without interrupting.
Then she looked at me.
"Olivia, we've located Vanessa's vehicle.""
"Where?""
"At a private airfield outside the city.""
My heart skipped.
"Is she leaving?""
"We believe she may be.""
The detective picked up her coat.
"Officers are on their way.""
I stood.
"Can I come?""
"No.""
"Please.""
"Absolutely not. This is an active investigation.""
I swallowed.
Then her phone rang again.
She answered.
"What do you mean, he's there?""
A pause.
"Who?""
Her expression changed.
"Martin Hale?""
She listened.
Then she ended the call.
I stared at her.
"What happened?""
"Martin was seen entering the hangar.""
"With Vanessa?""
The detective nodded.
Then another officer entered the room.
"Detective, we have a problem.""
"What?""
He handed her a photograph.
She examined it.
Then turned it toward me.
It showed Vanessa standing beside a private aircraft.
A man was holding a suitcase.
But it wasn't Martin.
It was my father.
I stared at the photograph.
"That's impossible.""
Detective Miller looked at me.
"Your father told us he was here.""
I turned toward the interview room.
The chair where Dad had been sitting was empty.
His phone was still on the table.
He was gone.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
Olivia, I'm sorry. I have to finish what I started.
Another message followed.
Vanessa has the original recording. If she reaches the airport, you'll never know the whole truth.
I looked at Detective Miller.
"He's going after her.""
She immediately reached for her radio.
But before she could speak, another message appeared.
This one was from Dad.
There's something I never told you about your mother's last words.
I stared at the screen.
Then the final message arrived.
May you like
She didn't ask me to protect you.
She asked me to protect you from me.
