Chapter 8: The Room Where the Truth Was Hidden
I stared at the open bedroom door upstairs.
A small gap.
Just enough to know someone had been there.
Just enough to know they had left in a hurry.
Nobody spoke.
The entire house felt frozen.
The same house where we had celebrated birthdays.
The same house where our daughters had grown up.
The same house where I had believed my family was safe.
Now every room felt like it was hiding something.
“Whose room?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
I already knew.
Because there was only one bedroom upstairs that had a reason to hide from us.
“Kendra.””
Her face changed.
“What?””
I looked at the open door.
“Kendra, is that your room?””
She shook her head quickly.
“No.””
Then she stopped.
Everyone noticed.
Because the lie came too fast.
“Kendra.””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“I swear I don’t know anything.””
“I didn’t ask if you did.””
I softened my voice.
“Is it your room?””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
I walked upstairs.
Behind me, I heard footsteps.
Zoria followed.
“Dad, wait.””
I stopped.
She looked at me.
“I don’t want you to think it’s her.””
I looked at my daughter.
“Why?””
“Because I know what it feels like.””
The words hurt.
She looked toward Kendra.
“She spent years believing she wasn’t enough.””
Zoria swallowed.
“I know what it feels like when someone makes you think you’re the problem.””
I nodded.
And together, we walked upstairs.
Kendra followed after a moment.
Not because she wanted to.
Because she needed to know too.
Valerie stayed downstairs.
Maybe because she was afraid.
Maybe because she already knew what we would find.
The bedroom door creaked when I pushed it open.
Kendra’s room looked normal at first.
A bed.
Books.
Pictures.
A desk.
Nothing suspicious.
Then I saw the second laptop.
Hidden beneath a pile of clothes.
Not hidden well.
Placed there.
Almost like someone wanted us to find it.
Kendra gasped.
“That’s not mine.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She stepped back.
“I’ve never seen that before.””
I walked toward it.
The laptop was open.
A password screen appeared.
Mrs. Bennett came into the room behind us.
“I recommend not touching anything else.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because if someone created evidence, they may have left traces.””
I stepped away.
“Can the university help?””
“No.””
She looked at the screen.
“But law enforcement can.””
The words made everyone go quiet.
Because suddenly this wasn’t a family argument.
This wasn’t a misunderstanding.
This was something much bigger.
Kendra sat on the edge of her bed.
Her hands were shaking.
“I don’t understand.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Why would someone use my name?””
Nobody answered.
Then Zoria sat beside her.
“Because they wanted us to hate each other.””
Kendra looked at her.
“And it worked.””
Zoria looked down.
“For a while.””
The honesty between them was painful.
But necessary.
A few minutes later, my phone rang.
Derek.
I answered immediately.
“Tell me you know what’s happening.””
His breathing was heavy.
“I saw the news.””
“What news?””
“The university contacted me.””
I frowned.
“Why would they contact you?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because my name appears in the financial records.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What financial records?””
“Michael…”
His voice sounded different.
Scared.
“The money Valerie borrowed from me.””
I waited.
“She didn’t tell you everything.””
My jaw tightened.
“What else is there?””
“She wasn’t the only one who used the account.””
I looked at Valerie downstairs.
“What are you saying?””
Derek hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Someone else had access.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You better start knowing.””
He took a breath.
“The person who created the fake profile.””
I looked at the laptop.
“The one on Kendra’s computer?””
“Yes.””
“How do you know?””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“Because I received the same file.””
My stomach dropped.
“What file?””
“The plan.””
I froze.
“What plan?””
Derek’s voice lowered.
“The one explaining how Kendra would take Zoria’s place.””
Everyone in the room heard me.
Zoria looked up.
Kendra covered her mouth.
“Who sent it?””
Derek didn’t answer.
“Derek.””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I’m serious.””
His voice cracked.
“I thought it was Valerie.””
I looked toward my wife.
“But?””
“But the file was created before Valerie contacted me.””
The room became silent.
“What does that mean?””
“It means she wasn’t the person who started this.””
My heart pounded.
“Then who was?””
Derek didn’t respond.
And that scared me more.
“Derek.””
Finally, he said:
“Michael, check the metadata.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The file information.””
I looked at the laptop.
“What am I looking for?””
“The original author.””
I walked closer.
Mrs. Bennett watched carefully.
“Can you access the file?””
The laptop wasn’t locked.
That worried me.
Too easy.
I opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Screenshots.
Messages.
Financial records.
A complete plan.
Not rushed.
Not emotional.
Organized.
The kind of plan someone creates when they have spent a long time thinking about it.
I opened the first document.
The title made my stomach twist.
*Family Opportunity Redistribution Plan*
I felt sick.
“Redistribution?””
Zoria leaned closer.
The document listed names.
Zoria.
Kendra.
Valerie.
Derek.
And one more.
A name I didn’t recognize.
Mrs. Bennett looked over my shoulder.
Then suddenly became very quiet.
“What?””
She stared at the screen.
“Do you know this person?””
I looked at her.
“You do?””
She pointed.
“The author.””
At the bottom of the document was the creator information.
*Created by: Elaine Carter*
My heart stopped.
Nobody in my family knew that name.
But Mrs. Bennett did.
Her face had gone pale.
“Who is she?””
Mrs. Bennett didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Elaine Carter used to work in the university admissions department.””
The room went silent.
“Used to?””
She nodded.
“She was removed from her position six months ago.””
“Why?””
Mrs. Bennett looked at the files again.
“Because she was accused of manipulating admissions records.””
I stared at the screen.
“Why would she care about my daughter?””
Mrs. Bennett looked troubled.
“I don’t know.””
Then she pointed to another file.
One I hadn’t noticed.
A folder titled:
*Phase Two*
My hand hovered over the mouse.
I clicked.
Inside was a list.
A list of future actions.
Future lies.
Future damage.
And at the top was a sentence that made my blood run cold:
*After Zoria’s withdrawal, Kendra will be positioned as the family’s success story.*
Kendra started crying.
“I never wanted that.””
I turned toward her.
“I know.””
Then another line appeared beneath it.
A line that changed everything.
Because it explained why this person had gone so far.
Why they wanted Zoria gone.
Why they needed Kendra to replace her.
*Kendra is not the final beneficiary.*
Everyone stared.
“What does that mean?”” Zoria whispered.
I scrolled down.
The next sentence appeared.
And when I read it, I felt the entire world shift.
*The scholarship was never the goal.*
My breathing stopped.
Because beneath it was the real plan.
The thing nobody had considered.
The reason someone was willing to destroy a family.
May you like
And the final line revealed exactly what they wanted from my daughter.
*Zoria’s identity, achievements, and future admission record will be transferred to another student.*
