Chapter 7: The Laptop That Revealed the Real Betrayal

For several seconds, nobody breathed.

The words hung in the air.

“The request was created from a laptop registered under Zoria’s own name.””

I looked at my daughter.

Her face had lost all color.

“No,” she whispered.

Mrs. Bennett didn’t look angry.

She looked sad.

Because she knew exactly what those words sounded like.

A person who had spent weeks believing she was betrayed was now being told the evidence pointed toward her.

“Zoria,” I said softly.

She looked at me immediately.

“Dad, I didn’t do this.””

I didn’t hesitate.

“I know.””

The relief that crossed her face lasted only a second before confusion replaced it.

“But how?””

She looked toward the laptop bag sitting near the back door.

“That’s my old laptop.””

I followed her eyes.

The same laptop she used throughout high school.

The same one she carried from room to room.

The same one that had her university applications, essays, and personal information.

Mrs. Bennett nodded.

“That is why the university investigated further.””

She opened another file.

“The device information suggested the request came from that laptop, but the account activity did not match Zoria’s normal usage.””

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

“It means someone used her device, but not her identity.””

Zoria took a shaky breath.

“So someone used my laptop.””

“Yes.””

Kendra stepped forward.

“But who?””

Nobody answered.

And that silence felt worse than before.

Because everyone in the family had a reason.

Everyone had been hiding something.

I looked at Valerie.

“Who had access to her laptop?””

Valerie immediately looked away.

That was enough.

“Valerie.””

She closed her eyes.

“Everyone.””

My expression hardened.

“No.””

I pointed toward the laptop.

“Not everyone. Someone knew where it was. Someone knew her password. Someone knew enough about her schedule to make this look real.””

Valerie stayed quiet.

Zoria looked hurt.

“Mom?””

Valerie looked at her daughter.

“I didn’t do it.””

Zoria nodded slowly.

“But you know something.””

The question broke Valerie.

She looked down.

“Yes.””

My anger returned.

“Of course you do.””

“I didn’t want to believe it.””

“Believe what?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Believe what?””

Valerie looked toward the house.

Then whispered:

“Kendra had access.””

The yard went silent.

Kendra froze.

“What?””

Valerie immediately raised her hands.

“I’m not saying she did it.””

But the damage was done.

Kendra looked at Zoria.

Then at her mother.

“You think I did?””

“No.””

“Do you?””

“No.””

Kendra’s voice cracked.

“Mom, do you?””

Valerie couldn’t answer quickly enough.

And that hesitation hurt.

Kendra stepped back.

“Wow.””

She laughed quietly.

“Even now.””

“What?””

“Even now, when Zoria is the one who was hurt, you’re still making me part of it.””

Valerie looked devastated.

“That’s not what I meant.””

“It’s exactly what you meant.””

Kendra shook her head.

“I spent years thinking I was the problem.””

She looked at Zoria.

“I thought every time you succeeded, I failed.””

Then she looked at Valerie.

“But you were the one creating that.””

Nobody interrupted.

Kendra wiped her face.

“I didn’t touch her laptop.””

Mrs. Bennett spoke carefully.

“The university has additional records.””

Everyone turned.

“What records?”” I asked.

“Login activity.””

She looked at Zoria.

“Your daughter’s laptop had a second user profile.””

Zoria frowned.

“A second profile?””

She shook her head.

“I never created one.””

Mrs. Bennett nodded.

“That profile was created recently.””

“When?””

“Four days before the scholarship withdrawal request.””

My stomach tightened.

Four days.

Someone planned this.

This wasn’t an emotional mistake.

This wasn’t a desperate decision.

Someone had prepared.

Someone had created a path to make Zoria look guilty.

“Can you see who created it?”” I asked.

Mrs. Bennett hesitated.

“The university cannot identify the person directly.””

My heart sank.

“But?””

She looked at her phone.

“But the laptop’s security report showed something interesting.””

“What?””

“The profile was created while the laptop was connected to your home network.””

I looked at Valerie.

Then at Kendra.

Then at the house.

Anyone inside could have done it.

Mrs. Bennett continued.

“And the profile name was not random.””

She turned the screen toward us.

A single word appeared.

*Kendra.*

Kendra stepped backward.

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“No, that’s not me.””

Zoria looked at her.

“I believe you.””

Kendra looked at her.

“But why would someone use my name?””

Nobody answered.

Because suddenly the question changed.

It wasn’t just who wanted Zoria to lose her scholarship.

It was who wanted Kendra blamed.

Someone wanted two sisters destroyed at the same time.

I looked at Valerie.

“You said Derek was helping you.””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Did he know about the laptop?””

Her face changed.

“I don’t know.””

“Did he know Kendra’s name was being used?””

Silence.

“Valerie.””

She looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

That answer wasn’t good enough.

Because someone knew.

And someone had been close enough to watch everything happen.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

This time, from the bank.

I opened it.

My eyes narrowed.

*New device successfully verified for account access.*

My heart dropped.

A new device?

When?

I clicked the details.

The verification time appeared.

Three days ago.

The same week everything started.

I looked at the device name.

And my blood ran cold.

Because it wasn’t mine.

It wasn’t Valerie’s.

It wasn’t Kendra’s.

It was labeled:

*ZORIA-LAPTOP-ADMIN*

I looked up.

“What?””

Everyone stared at me.

I showed Mrs. Bennett.

Her expression changed.

“That’s impossible.””

“What?””

“That device name was used to access the university portal.””

Zoria looked confused.

“But that’s just my laptop name.””

Mrs. Bennett nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then what does that mean?””

She looked at the screen.

“It means whoever did this didn’t just use your laptop.””

She paused.

“They gained administrator access.””

Zoria’s eyes widened.

“What does that mean?””

I answered before Mrs. Bennett could.

“It means they weren’t just pretending to be you.””

The words came out slowly.

“They were trying to become you.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because this was no longer about a scholarship.

This was about identity.

Someone had been building a fake version of my daughter.

A version that would take the blame.

Then a sound came from inside the house.

A door closing.

Everyone turned.

Nobody had moved.

At least nobody we could see.

Then Kendra whispered:

“Someone’s inside.””

My body reacted instantly.

I walked toward the house.

“Michael,” Valerie called.

I ignored her.

I opened the front door.

The living room was dark.

The party decorations continued inside.

Photos of our family covered the walls.

Photos of birthdays.

Holidays.

Graduations.

A life I thought I understood.

Then I saw the laptop.

Sitting on the kitchen table.

Open.

The screen was glowing.

Someone had been using it moments ago.

I walked closer.

A document was open.

A draft email.

My hands tightened.

Because the email wasn’t sent yet.

But the subject line was already written.

*Emergency Withdrawal — Zoria Bennett*

And underneath it was a message.

A message that made me realize the person behind everything wasn’t trying to destroy my daughter’s future.

They were trying to replace it.

The final line on the screen read:

*Once Zoria leaves, Kendra takes her place.*

I turned around.

Everyone was standing in the doorway.

Everyone except one person.

The person who had disappeared.

May you like

And when I saw whose room door upstairs was slightly open…

I knew exactly where the truth was hiding.
