Chapter 8: The Child He Chose
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Olivia's final words echoed in my ears.
He's taken Ruby.
I looked at Detective Alvarez.
“Richard has Ruby.””
Her expression hardened.
“Where?””
“I don't know.””
“Did Olivia tell you?””
“She called and said he had taken her. Then the line went dead.””
Alvarez immediately turned to one of her officers.
“Get me a location on Richard Vale's vehicle. Check every address associated with the foundation. I want units at his residence, the research center, and every private clinic he's funded.””
The officer hurried away.
Alvarez looked back at me.
“Damien, I need you to stay here while we secure the evidence.””
“No.””
“You nearly fell from a second-floor window. Someone just tried to take your daughter. You are not in a condition to chase anyone.””
“Ruby is six years old.””
“I know.””
“She has spent her entire life being passed from one person to another because Richard Vale decided she wasn't worth keeping. I'm not leaving her.””
Alvarez's expression softened, but her voice remained firm.
“I'm not asking you to abandon her. I'm asking you not to get yourself killed before we can help her.””
I looked at Sophie.
She was standing beside the police car, wrapped in an officer's jacket. Her face was pale, and she kept glancing toward the road.
“Daddy,” she whispered, “is Ruby in trouble?””
I knelt in front of her.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Is it because she looks like me?””
“No.””
“Then why does Grandpa Richard want her?””
I couldn't answer.
How could I explain that a man who had once held her in his arms had spent six years treating her and her sister like pieces of a medical puzzle?
How could I tell her that the person who had promised to protect our family had become the greatest threat to it?
I brushed the hair from her face.
“Because he has done terrible things, sweetheart. But we're going to stop him.””
Sophie looked down at her shoes.
“Can I help?””
I took her hands.
“You already have.””
She blinked.
“How?””
“By being brave enough to tell the truth.””
She leaned forward and hugged me.
I held her until Alvarez called my name.
“We found something.””
She showed me a message from one of the officers.
Richard's SUV had been spotted leaving the research center twenty minutes earlier. It was heading toward a private estate outside Atlanta, an address registered to the Vale Foundation.
The same estate where Richard had hosted charity galas and political fundraisers.
The same estate where Olivia had spent much of her childhood.
“That's where he's taking Ruby,” I said.
“Probably,” Alvarez replied.
“But we need confirmation before we move.””
“Then get it.””
She studied me.
“There's something else. The medical records you found are significant, but I need to know what Project Aster actually involved. The documents refer to a control case and a genetic match. That suggests the study was not simply diagnostic.””
I pulled the silver bird from my pocket.
“Dr. Hayes said this opens an archive beneath the research center.””
“Did he explain what's inside?””
“Original study data. Payment records. Private recordings.””
Alvarez nodded slowly.
“Then we need that archive.””
“Richard knows we have the records from the hospital. He'll destroy anything else that could incriminate him.””
“Which means we need to move before he realizes how much we know.””
She turned to one of her officers.
“Get a warrant for the research center. Contact the district attorney. Tell them we have evidence of forged medical consent, unlawful transfer of a minor, and possible medical abuse.””
The officer hurried away.
I looked at Alvarez.
“I'm going to the estate.””
“You're not going alone.””
“I wasn't planning to.””
“Good. Because we're doing this properly.””
She paused.
“There's one person we need to speak to first.””
“Who?””
“Dr. Hayes.””
We found him in a small police interview room two hours later.
He looked as though he hadn't slept in days. His tie was loose, his shirt collar stained with sweat, and his hands shook whenever he tried to lift the paper cup of water in front of him.
When I entered, he stood immediately.
“Damien.””
I didn't sit.
“Tell me what Richard wants from Ruby.””
Hayes looked at Alvarez.
She nodded once.
“Doctor, we have recovered the original medical records. You can cooperate now, or you can continue withholding information while the investigation proceeds.””
He lowered himself into the chair.
“I'll tell you everything.””
“Start with Project Aster,” Alvarez said.
Hayes rubbed his face.
“Richard's older brother, Andrew, died from an inherited cardiac disorder. It was a rare condition that caused progressive damage to the heart muscle. The Vale family had known about it for generations, but no one had found a reliable treatment.””
“So Richard started a research program,” I said.
“Yes. At first, it was legitimate. He funded genetic screening and experimental therapies. But after several years, he became obsessed with the idea that the condition could be reversed using a biological match.””
“A match between whom?””
“Close relatives. Ideally, siblings with the same inherited markers.””
I felt sick.
“The twins.””
Hayes nodded.
“Richard believed that if one child expressed the condition and the other did not, studying the differences might reveal a protective genetic factor.””
“Then why separate them?””
“Because he wanted to control their environments. He believed outside influences could complicate the study.””
“You mean their parents.””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“You helped him.””
Hayes closed his eyes.
“I did.””
“Did you know he was planning to take Sophie?””
“I knew he intended to continue monitoring her. I didn't know he would seek custody.””
“Did you know he had forged my signature?””
“I suspected the consent forms were fraudulent.””
I slammed my hand against the table.
“You suspected? You were her doctor!””
Alvarez stepped between us.
“Damien.””
I pulled away.
Hayes looked at me with exhausted eyes.
“I was wrong. I told myself the research might save lives. I told myself the children were receiving excellent medical care. I told myself Richard would never cross certain lines.””
“And when he crossed them?””
“I kept telling myself there was nothing I could do.””
His voice cracked.
“Until I saw the latest results.””
“What results?”” I demanded.
Hayes reached into his folder and removed a medical report.
“Sophie's sixth-year evaluation showed that she did not have the progressive cardiac abnormality Richard expected. She carries the genetic marker, but her heart is functioning normally.””
“Then she's healthy.””
“Yes.””
“Then why does Richard want her?””
“Because Ruby's latest screening showed a different pattern. She has a protective variant that may explain why she hasn't developed the condition. Richard believes that studying Ruby alongside Sophie could lead to a breakthrough.””
I looked at the report.
“So he wants to use Ruby to treat Sophie?””
“Not exactly.””
Hayes hesitated.
“Richard believes Ruby's biological material could be used to develop a therapy for the condition. He has been pursuing an experimental approach that has never been approved for use in children.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“What kind of approach?””
“It's complicated. It involves extracting and comparing specific cellular material, then testing whether it can alter the expression of the inherited condition.””
“Would it hurt them?””
Hayes didn't answer quickly enough.
I stepped toward him.
“Would it hurt my daughters?””
He swallowed.
“It could.””
Alvarez's voice became icy.
“Did Richard obtain informed consent for this procedure?””
“No.””
“Did either parent consent?””
“Not knowingly.””
I stared at the doctor.
“And you let him continue.””
Hayes nodded.
“Yes.””
The room fell silent.
I wanted to hate him. Part of me did.
But I could see the shame in his face, and I knew that shame wasn't going to bring my daughters home.
“What happens if Richard gets Ruby to the research center?”” I asked.
Hayes looked at the clock.
“If he proceeds with the next stage of the study, he could begin the procedure tonight.””
My blood ran cold.
“Tonight?””
“He told me the deadline was approaching. He said he couldn't wait any longer.””
Alvarez stood.
“Then we're out of time.””
She turned to me.
“Damien, I need you to understand something. If Richard is holding a child and preparing to perform an unauthorized medical procedure, we have grounds to intervene. But we need to locate the exact room where he's keeping her.””
Hayes looked up.
“I know where.””
He pulled a floor plan from his folder and spread it across the table.
The research center had three levels above ground and two underground. The lowest level was marked with a code rather than a department name.
*ASTER — RESTRICTED ACCESS.*
Hayes pointed to a room at the end of the corridor.
“That's the procedure suite. It's protected by two electronic locks. The silver bird opens the first one. The second requires a physical key.””
“Evelyn has it,” I said.
Hayes nodded.
“Then we need Evelyn.””
Alvarez took out her phone.
“We've been trying to locate her.””
“Richard is monitoring her phone,” I said.
“Olivia warned me.””
Hayes looked at me sharply.
“Olivia contacted you?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Last night. She said she was trying to get our daughters home.””
His face changed.
“Then she's closer than we thought.””
“What does that mean?””
Hayes looked at the floor plan.
“Three years ago, Olivia came to the center and stole the archive key. Richard never found it. He believed she had hidden it somewhere inside the old hospital.””
“She left a message for me there.””
“Then she must have retrieved the key.””
I thought of the cemetery, the metal box, and the letter.
“Where would she go?””
Hayes hesitated.
“There's one place she used to visit when she wanted to disappear.””
“Where?””
“The Vale estate has a guesthouse at the back of the property. Olivia lived there briefly after her father moved her out of the main house.””
Alvarez grabbed her coat.
“Let's go.””
We left the station with two officers and a plan to approach the estate from the rear.
Sophie stayed with a trusted officer and Mrs. Bennett, who had arrived after I called her. I kissed my daughter goodbye and promised I would return with Ruby.
“Bring Mommy, too,” she whispered.
I touched her cheek.
“I will.””
As we drove toward the estate, I watched the trees blur past the window.
I remembered Olivia's laughter. Her blue dress. The way she used to hold my hand when she was nervous.
I remembered the promise I'd made beneath the garden lights.
We'll always find our way home.
I had failed to keep that promise once.
I wasn't going to fail again.
The estate's gates appeared through the trees shortly after midnight.
Two security vehicles stood near the entrance. Lights glowed in the main house, but the guesthouse was dark.
Alvarez signaled for us to stop.
“Stay behind me,” she ordered.
We moved along a narrow path beside the property wall. The grass was wet beneath our shoes, and the smell of pine filled the night air.
The guesthouse door stood slightly open.
I pushed it inward.
“Olivia?””
No answer.
The room was empty except for a chair, a small table, and a photograph lying on the floor.
I picked it up.
It showed Olivia holding Ruby as a newborn.
On the back, she had written:
*I tried to save you both. Forgive me for being too late.*
I turned toward the window.
A curtain moved in the breeze.
Someone had left recently.
Alvarez searched the room while I examined the table.
There was a key taped beneath it.
A small brass key.
Beside it lay a note.
*The second lock. The truth is underneath the house.*
I looked at Hayes.
“Underneath the house?””
He nodded slowly.
“The research center has a service tunnel connecting it to the old Vale property. It was built years ago for transporting equipment.””
“Where does it enter?””
“Beneath the guesthouse.””
A sound came from outside.
An engine.
Then another.
Alvarez moved to the window and looked through the curtain.
Her face hardened.
“Richard's security team is here.””
I gripped the key.
“How many?””
“At least six.””
Hayes went pale.
“They know we're here.””
A loudspeaker crackled from the driveway.
Richard's voice filled the night.
“Damien, I know you're inside.””
I moved toward the door.
“Then come and face me!””
“I'm not interested in fighting you,” Richard replied.
“I'm interested in ending this before anyone else gets hurt.””
“Where's Ruby?””
“Safe.””
“Bring her out!””
“Not until you give me the archive key.””
I looked down at the brass key in my hand.
Richard continued.
“You have something that belongs to me, Damien. And I have something that belongs to you.””
My phone vibrated.
A live video appeared.
Ruby sat on a narrow bed beneath fluorescent lights. Her hands were folded in her lap, and her blackbird necklace rested on the blanket beside her.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Daddy?””
My throat tightened.
Richard's voice came through the speaker.
“Bring me the silver bird and the brass key. Come alone. If you refuse, I will proceed without your cooperation.””
The video froze.
Then a final message appeared.
*You have thirty minutes.*
Alvarez looked at me.
“We're going in.””
Hayes pointed toward a narrow hatch beneath the floorboards.
“The tunnel leads directly to the restricted level.””
I took a deep breath.
Richard had stolen six years from our family.
He had lied to my wife, stolen my daughter, and turned medicine into a weapon.
Now he had Ruby.
And for the first time since this nightmare began, I knew exactly where to find him.
I opened the hatch.
Cold air rose from the darkness below.

Then, from somewhere deep beneath the estate, I heard a little girl crying.
“Daddy, please come get me.””
