Chapter 9: The Night the Truth Went Public
By four that afternoon, Maya's name had appeared in a legal notice she had never seen before.
The notice claimed that she had unlawfully taken possession of intellectual property belonging to VB Luxury Holdings. It demanded that she surrender the Eclipse gown, cease all public displays of the design, and refrain from applying for any showcase involving the collection.
Clara read the notice twice in the passenger seat of Daniel's car.
"This is an attempt to establish control before the evidence can be reviewed," she said.
"It doesn't mean Vanessa's claim is valid.""
Daniel gripped the steering wheel.
"Can she actually stop Maya from presenting?""
"She can ask a court for an injunction. Whether she gets one depends on the evidence and the applicable law. We need to move quickly.""
Maya looked out the window.
The city moved around them as if nothing had changed. People carried shopping bags along crowded sidewalks. A cyclist waited at a traffic light. Two teenagers laughed outside a bakery.
It was strange to realize that her entire world had been turned upside down while everyone else continued with their day.
"How did Vanessa know we found the archive?"" she asked.
Clara glanced toward James, who was following in another car.
"Someone may have told her. Or she may have been monitoring the property. We don't know yet.""
Maya looked down at the folder on her lap.
Inside were copies of Evelyn's sketches, financial records, and the original trust documents.
The truth was finally within reach.
And Vanessa had responded by trying to take everything away again.
When they arrived home, Daniel went straight to his study to contact the lawyer handling the dispute.
Clara began preparing an inventory of the recovered documents.
Maya carried the original Eclipse gown upstairs and laid it carefully across her bed.
She stared at the silver stitching.
For the first time since she had created it, the dress felt heavy.
Not because of the fabric.
Because of everything it represented.
Her mother's work.
Her father's mistakes.
Vanessa's secrets.
And the possibility that the one thing Maya had created for herself might be taken away before she ever had the chance to show it to the world.
Her phone vibrated.
Margaret.
"Have you listened to the entire recording?"" Margaret asked.
"Not yet. Clara wants to preserve it first.""
"Good. Don't let anyone alter the original. Arthur found another document this morning.""
Maya sat down.
"What document?""
"The original trust declaration. It was filed in a separate archive under your mother's maiden name. Arthur believes it may contain the missing registration number.""
Maya's heart quickened.
"Does that mean the trust is valid?""
"It means we may finally be able to establish whether it was properly created. But there is a complication.""
"Of course there is.""
Margaret gave a tired laugh.
"Your mother named two independent witnesses to the trust. One was Thomas Reed. The other was a woman named Helen Price.""
"Who is she?""
"She worked as Evelyn's studio manager. She left Boston shortly after the collection disappeared.""
"Do you know where she went?""
"Arthur believes she moved to Connecticut. He has an old address, but he hasn't been able to reach her.""
Maya looked toward the window.
"Then we need to find her.""
"Your lawyer should handle that. Don't contact potential witnesses without guidance.""
Maya nodded, even though Margaret couldn't see her.
"There's something else," Margaret continued.
"I need to tell you why I didn't challenge Vanessa's version of events sooner.""
Maya waited.
"After Evelyn died, Vanessa sent me a letter claiming that Daniel had withdrawn from the agreement and that he wanted the collection closed permanently. She included a copy of his signature.""
"The same signature on the trustee document?""
"Possibly. I didn't realize the papers might have been altered until recently.""
Maya swallowed.
"Why didn't you contact Dad directly?""
"I tried. Vanessa intercepted my calls and told me he was too distraught to speak with anyone. Eventually, I believed that he wanted to move on.""
Maya closed her eyes.
For years, the family had been divided by messages that never reached their intended recipients.
Her mother had believed the collection was protected.
Her father had believed it was lost.
Margaret had believed Daniel wanted nothing to do with it.
And Vanessa had been the person standing between all of them.
"Thank you for telling me," Maya said.
After the call ended, she sat quietly for several minutes.
Then she opened her mother's sketchbook and began organizing the designs.
The more she studied them, the more she noticed the consistency in Evelyn's work. Every seam served a purpose. Every unusual detail was connected to movement, light, or the way fabric changed when a person walked.
The gown Maya had created was not a perfect restoration.
She had changed the skirt, reinforced the shoulder panels, and incorporated the remains of the devil costume.
But she had done it with the same instinct her mother had possessed.
She had transformed damaged material into something new without pretending the damage had never happened.
At six thirty, Daniel knocked on her door.
"Clara wants us downstairs.""
Maya followed him to the study.
Clara stood beside the desk with two printed documents and a laptop.
"We've reviewed the legal notice," she said.
"Vanessa's company claims ownership of the Eclipse Collection based on the transfer agreement. But the archive contains evidence that the transfer may have been unauthorized.""
"Can we fight it?"" Maya asked.
"Yes. We'll challenge the agreement and request an independent examination of the records. But there's a risk.""
"What risk?""
"If the court issues a temporary injunction before we establish the trust's status, the showcase could be delayed. We may need to negotiate with the foundation to preserve your opportunity.""
Maya looked at the invitation on the desk.
"How long would that take?""
"Potentially weeks.""
The words settled over her like a cold blanket.
The showcase was less than a month away.
Her eighteenth birthday was three weeks away.
And Vanessa had moved first.
Daniel paced beside the window.
"Can we stop her from selling the collection?""
"Possibly, if we can establish that the trust exists and that the assets were transferred improperly. But we need the original records authenticated.""
Clara opened the laptop.
"I've also reviewed the bank statements from the archive. Several payments were made from the original studio account to VB Luxury Holdings. The dates are significant.""
Maya leaned forward.
"Why?""
"The first transfer occurred before Evelyn signed the settlement agreement. The second occurred two days before her final hospitalization.""
Daniel stopped pacing.
"How much?""
Clara turned the screen.
The figures made Maya's stomach twist.
The transfers totaled more money than she had ever imagined her mother could have possessed.
"That was the investment money," Daniel whispered.
"It was supposed to fund the studio.""
Clara nodded.
"If these records are genuine, someone diverted the funds before the collection was formally transferred.""
Maya looked at her father.
"Could Vanessa have done it?""
"She had access to the accounts," Daniel said.
"But we need proof of who authorized the transactions.""
Clara closed the laptop.
"That's why the recording matters. We need to preserve it and have it examined. If it supports the documentary evidence, it could become central to the case.""
A knock sounded at the front door.
Daniel went to answer it.
A moment later, he returned carrying a large envelope.
"There's no return address.""
Clara took it from him.
"Don't open it until we've photographed it.""
She documented the envelope, then carefully removed the contents.
Inside was a single sheet of paper and a small USB drive.
The paper contained a typed message.
You have until midnight to withdraw Maya Bennett's application from the Hawthorne showcase. If you refuse, the original collection will be sold, and every document in your possession will be challenged in court.
Below the message was a signature.
Vanessa Whitmore.
Maya stared at it.
"She's threatening us.""
Clara's expression hardened.
"She may have just created another problem for herself.""
Daniel picked up the USB drive.
"What is this?""
Clara stopped him.
"We'll have it examined safely. Don't connect it to any personal device.""
Maya looked at the paper.
"Why would she send this if she thinks she owns the collection?""
"Because she knows we have evidence she doesn't want examined," Clara replied.
Maya felt anger rise inside her.
For six years, Vanessa had used fear to keep everyone quiet.
She had controlled the house, the finances, the family story, and even the memories Maya was allowed to keep of her mother.
Now she was trying to use the same tactics again.
But Maya had something Vanessa had never expected.
She had the documents.
She had the recording.
And she had people willing to listen.
"Don't withdraw my application," Maya said.
Daniel turned toward her.
"Maya, this could become ugly.""
"It already is.""
Clara studied her.
"Are you certain?""
Maya nodded.
"I don't want to use the showcase to embarrass Vanessa. I want to show my work. If the collection belongs to someone else, we'll deal with that legally. But I'm not going to let her threaten me into disappearing.""
Clara gave a small nod.
"Then we'll protect your application while we challenge the claim.""
At eight that evening, Maya received an email from Richard Hale.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: HAWTHORNE SHOWCASE*
She opened it.
Richard explained that the foundation had received a formal complaint from VB Luxury Holdings alleging that Maya's gown used protected designs without authorization. The committee was temporarily suspending her presentation pending legal clarification.
Maya read the message twice.
Then she called him.
"Richard, I didn't steal anyone's designs.""
"I know you created the gown yourself," he said.
"But the complaint concerns ownership of the original Eclipse collection, not simply who stitched the fabric.""
"My mother designed it.""
"And that's why I haven't rejected your application. I need documentation that establishes your rights to present the work.""
"We're gathering it.""
"Good. Send it through Clara. I'll ask the committee to postpone its decision until we have reviewed the evidence.""
Maya thanked him and ended the call.
For the first time that evening, she felt hope.
Then her phone rang again.
An unfamiliar number.
She answered.
"Maya Bennett?""
"Yes.""
"This is Helen Price.""
Maya stood up so quickly that her chair scraped across the floor.
"The studio manager?""
"That's right.""
"Margaret has been looking for you.""
"I know. I've been avoiding calls from unknown numbers.""
Maya swallowed.
"Do you know what happened to my mother's collection?""
Helen was silent for several seconds.
Then she said, "I know what happened to the trust.""
Maya's pulse thundered.
"Can you prove it?""
"I kept a copy of the original registration certificate. Evelyn gave it to me the morning before she went to the hospital.""
Maya covered her mouth.
"Where are you?""
"Connecticut.""
"Can we meet?""
"Not at your house. Not at the studio. Vanessa has people who know where to look.""
Maya glanced toward the study, where Daniel and Clara were still examining the evidence.
"Where, then?""
Helen gave her an address.
"Tomorrow morning. Bring your lawyer.""
Maya wrote it down.
Before ending the call, Helen added, "There's something else you should know. Evelyn didn't just create the Eclipse Collection for you.""
Maya frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"She created it to expose what someone had done to her business. The designs were only part of the evidence.""
Maya felt the blood drain from her face.
"What else was there?""
Helen's voice dropped.
"An account book. It recorded every payment, every transfer, and every person who received money from the studio.""
Maya looked at the financial records on the desk.
"Do you have it?""
"No.""
"Then where is it?""
Helen paused.
"Vanessa took it the night Evelyn was admitted to the hospital.""
The line crackled.
Then Helen said something that made Maya's knees weaken.
"But Evelyn made one final copy, and I believe it's hidden inside the original Eclipse garment.""
Maya stared at the dress upstairs.
The gown she had reconstructed from the black rag.
The garment Vanessa had desperately tried to take from her.
The dress that had survived six years of lies.
Before Maya could ask another question, Helen whispered:
"If you've already cut into the lining, you may have found it.""
The call ended.
Maya ran upstairs.
She pulled the gown from the closet and laid it across her bed. Her hands trembled as she examined the inside seams, searching for anything she might have overlooked.
Near the left shoulder, beneath a fold of black fabric, she found a second label.
This one was stitched with almost invisible thread.
She carefully lifted the edge.
A narrow pocket had been sewn into the lining.
Inside was a folded sheet of paper and a small memory card sealed in plastic.
Maya unfolded the paper.
It contained a list of dates, payment amounts, and initials.
At the bottom, her mother's handwriting formed one final sentence.
If they deny what happened, let the numbers speak.
Maya stared at the memory card.
Then she heard footsteps in the hallway.
Daniel appeared in the doorway.
"Maya? What's wrong?""
She held up the card.
"I think I found the account book.""
Daniel approached slowly.
His eyes fixed on the tiny plastic case.
For a moment, he looked relieved.
Then he saw the paper.
He read the first three entries.
His face went completely white.
"Maya," he whispered.
"Where did you get this?""
"Inside the dress.""
Daniel sank onto the edge of the bed.
Because the first payment listed on the page was dated six years earlier.
And beside it were the initials of the person who had authorized the transfer.
Not Vanessa's.
May you like
Not Thomas Reed's.
His own.
