Amused

Chapter 8: The Son Who Wasn't His Father's

Daniel was waiting outside a small restaurant when I arrived the following afternoon.

He stood beside his black SUV, holding a leather folder.

For a moment, I remembered the man I had married.

The man who used to bring me coffee in bed.

The man who once promised that we would have children, even if we had to travel across the country to find the right doctors.

Then I remembered the emails.

The forged signatures.

The medical report.

I stepped out of my car.

"Why did you want to meet?""

Daniel glanced toward the restaurant.

"Let's go inside.""

"No. Say what you need to say.""

He looked tired.

"I know you've been speaking to Olivia.""

"She's your sister.""

"She's my sister, and she's making a terrible mistake.""

"By telling the truth?""

He clenched his jaw.

"By believing everything you tell her.""

I folded my arms.

"Then show me the original report.""

He opened his folder.

There were several documents inside.

He handed me the first page.

It was a laboratory report from four years earlier.

The diagnosis was different from the one I remembered.

According to this version, I had experienced unexplained reproductive dysfunction.

Daniel's results were listed as inconclusive.

I looked up.

"This is the altered report.""

"No.""

"Daniel, I've seen the original.""

He stepped closer.

"Then you've seen what my mother wanted you to see.""

I stared at him.

"Your mother?""

He nodded.

"She paid Dr. Miller.""

I waited.

"She also threatened him.""

"With what?""

Daniel looked away.

"Something from before I was born.""

My stomach tightened.

"Your parentage.""

His head snapped toward me.

"Who told you that?""

"Olivia.""

He laughed bitterly.

"Of course she did.""

I looked at him.

"Is it true?""

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Finally, he nodded.

"My father wasn't my biological father.""

I felt no satisfaction.

Only disbelief.

"Did Robert know?""

"Eventually.""

"When?""

"Years ago.""

Daniel leaned against his SUV.

"My mother had an affair before she married Robert. She was young. She was afraid of losing him, so she lied.""

"Who was your biological father?""

Daniel stared at the ground.

"Dr. Miller.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"Your fertility doctor?""

"He wasn't my fertility doctor when I was born. He was my mother's boyfriend.""

I took a step backward.

Daniel continued.

"Robert knew about the affair. He chose to raise me anyway. He loved me. He never treated me differently.""

"Then why did Patricia keep it secret?""

"Because she was afraid I'd reject her.""

I stared at him.

"And how does that explain what happened to my medical records?""

Daniel rubbed his face.

"Mom was terrified that if I had fertility problems, someone would start asking questions about my biological father.""

I slowly understood.

Patricia had wanted to protect Daniel from a genetic truth that might reveal her affair.

But instead of confronting the possibility, she had decided to blame me.

"She thought people would assume the problem came from your biological father," I said.

Daniel nodded.

"She didn't want anyone questioning the family.""

"So she made me the problem.""

He looked at me.

"Yes.""

The answer came quietly.

Without excuses.

Without denial.

For the first time in four years, Daniel had admitted it.

I felt my eyes burn.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

He swallowed.

"Because I was ashamed.""

I laughed once.

"You keep saying that.""

"I know.""

"You were ashamed of your infertility, ashamed of your parentage, ashamed of your mother's choices. So you made me carry all of it.""

He didn't answer.

I looked at him.

"Did you know your mother intended to use Robert's biological material?""

"Not at first.""

"When did you find out?""

"After he died.""

I stared at him.

"How?""

Daniel looked toward the street.

"Mom showed me the storage records. She said Robert had left genetic material behind and that it could help us have children.""

"Did Robert authorize it?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

"Then why did you agree?""

He looked at me.

"Because I wanted a family.""

I felt something inside me break.

"You already had a family. You had me.""

His eyes filled.

"I know.""

"No, Daniel. You don't.""

I stepped closer.

"You had a wife who loved you. A woman who would have gone through treatment with you, adopted a child with you, or built a life with you without children. But you decided your pride was more important than our marriage.""

He looked away.

I continued.

"And then you used my embryos without permission.""

He finally whispered, "I'm sorry.""

The apology came four years too late.

I placed the report on the hood of his car.

"Why did you ask me here?""

He opened the folder again.

"Because I want you to understand that my mother controlled everything.""

I stared at him.

"Are you trying to blame her?""

"No.""

"Then what?""

He removed another document.

It was a copy of a private agreement between Patricia and Dr. Miller.

The heading read:

*Confidentiality and Family Protection Agreement.*

Beneath it were several clauses.

The first required Dr. Miller to maintain Daniel's medical information as confidential.

The second offered financial compensation.

The third concerned the embryos.

And the final clause made my blood run cold.

In the event of a dispute, all parties agree to prevent disclosure of the biological relationship between Dr. Evan Miller and Daniel Hayes.

I looked up.

"Who signed this?""

Daniel pointed.

His mother's signature.

Dr. Miller's signature.

And his own.

I stared at him.

"You signed it?""

He nodded.

"When?""

"Two years ago.""

"After our divorce?""

"Yes.""

I felt sick.

"Why?""

"Because Mom said it was the only way to protect everyone.""

I shook my head.

"You didn't protect anyone.""

He lowered his eyes.

Then he said something that changed everything.

"Sarah, there's another reason Mom wanted Vanessa to carry those embryos.""

"What?""

"She wanted to prove something.""

"To whom?""

Daniel swallowed.

"To Dr. Miller.""

I stared at him.

"What are you talking about?""

He looked toward the restaurant.

"Mom believed Dr. Miller was the biological father of both me and the embryos created from Robert's preserved material.""

I frowned.

"That doesn't make sense.""

"She thought the genetic records would expose the truth if anyone compared them.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Then why transfer the embryos?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because she wanted a child who would belong to the family without anyone knowing where the genetic material came from.""

I stared at him.

"That is insane.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

Then he looked at me with something close to desperation.

"Sarah, I need you to help me stop her.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Why would I help you?""

"Because if the truth comes out, Vanessa will lose everything.""

"Vanessa deserves the truth.""

"And Olivia—"

"Olivia deserves the truth too.""

He grabbed my wrist.

I pulled away immediately.

"Don't touch me.""

His face tightened.

"Please. I know I made mistakes, but I don't want my family destroyed.""

I looked at him.

"Your family was destroyed the moment you decided the truth was optional.""

Then I walked away.

But before I reached my car, Daniel called after me.

"Sarah!""

I stopped.

He held up another paper.

"There's something you don't know about the embryos.""

I turned.

"What?""

He swallowed.

"Robert wasn't the only person whose genetic material was stored at Northstar.""

I felt a chill.

"Who else?""

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Patricia.""

That evening, I met Vanessa and Olivia at Rebecca's office.

I explained everything Daniel had told me.

Vanessa listened without interrupting.

When I mentioned the agreement signed by Daniel, she covered her mouth.

"He knew all along.""

"Yes.""

She looked down at her wedding ring.

"I keep thinking about the day he proposed. He told me that he wanted a family built on honesty.""

Olivia shook her head.

"He wanted a family built on silence.""

Rebecca placed the documents in separate evidence folders.

"There's one part I want clarified.""

She turned toward Olivia.

"Did you know your mother had preserved biological material?""

Olivia looked horrified.

"No.""

"Could she have undergone fertility treatment herself?""

Olivia hesitated.

"She had a medical procedure years ago. She said it was for a hormonal condition.""

Rebecca made a note.

"Do you know which clinic?""

"Northstar.""

I stared at her.

"Northstar?""

Olivia nodded.

"She was a patient there long before Daniel and Sarah.""

Rebecca looked at the medical file.

"That may be significant.""

She opened the preliminary genetic report.

"Let's be careful. The report establishes a possible genetic relationship, but it does not establish that Patricia's material was used. We need the original sample identification and an independent test.""

Vanessa looked at her.

"What if the baby isn't genetically related to Daniel?""

Rebecca answered gently.

"Then you deserve to know that before making any decisions about your marriage.""

Vanessa nodded.

"I don't care about the genetics. I care that my husband knew and lied.""

I looked at her.

"That's understandable.""

She turned toward me.

"Sarah, I need to ask you something.""

"Go ahead.""

"If the baby is genetically related to Robert instead of Daniel, would you still want the embryos destroyed?""

I considered the question.

"I don't want anyone using my reproductive material without consent. But the decision isn't about punishing a child. It's about stopping the adults from making more unauthorized decisions.""

Vanessa nodded slowly.

"I agree.""

Rebecca closed the folder.

"Then we'll proceed with the legal request. No transfer, no additional use, and no alteration of the stored material until the court determines the appropriate next steps.""

Olivia exhaled.

For a moment, it felt as though we had finally found solid ground.

Then Rebecca's phone rang.

She answered.

"Rebecca Lawson.""

A pause.

"Yes, this is she.""

Her expression changed.

"You're saying the original sample was replaced?""

She stood.

"Who authorized the replacement?""

Another pause.

Then she looked directly at me.

"Are you certain?""

She listened for several seconds.

Finally, she hung up.

"What happened?"" I asked.

Rebecca took a breath.

"The independent laboratory has completed an initial review of the stored sample identifiers.""

"And?""

"The genetic material associated with the embryo transferred into Vanessa does not match Robert Hayes's preserved sample.""

Olivia frowned.

"Then whose is it?""

Rebecca looked at the report.

"Patricia Hayes.""

Vanessa went completely still.

I stared at her.

"Patricia?""

Rebecca nodded.

"The genetic profile appears to match Patricia's archived medical sample.""

Olivia covered her mouth.

"That's impossible.""

Rebecca continued.

"The laboratory also found evidence that the sample identification was deliberately altered before the transfer.""

Vanessa slowly stood.

"So the baby I'm carrying—"

Rebecca raised a hand.

"We cannot determine the full genetic relationship without further testing. But the records suggest that the embryo may have been created using Patricia's biological material.""

I felt dizzy.

Patricia had arranged for her own biological material to be used.

But why?

And why had she wanted Vanessa to carry that particular embryo?

Then Olivia spoke.

"There's something I never told you.""

We all turned.

She was crying.

"My mother once told me that she wanted another child.""

Rebecca looked at her.

"Another child?""

Olivia nodded.

"She said she regretted not having more children when she was younger.""

Vanessa looked horrified.

"Are you saying she wanted to become the biological mother of my baby?""

Olivia nodded.

"Maybe.""

The room went silent.

Then Rebecca's computer chimed.

A new email had arrived from the independent laboratory.

She opened the attachment.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she slowly looked up.

"There's another genetic contributor listed in the embryo record.""

I leaned forward.

"Who?""

Rebecca turned the screen toward us.

The report listed two contributors.

Patricia Hayes.

And Dr. Evan Miller.

Vanessa stepped backward.

"Oh my God.""

Olivia started crying.

"My mother and Dr. Miller...""

Rebecca closed the document.

"That appears to be the genetic combination associated with the transferred embryo, pending final confirmation.""

I looked at the women around the table.

Patricia hadn't just used my embryos.

She had apparently created a separate embryo using her own genetic material and Dr. Miller's.

Then she had arranged for Vanessa to carry it while telling her it came from Daniel's previous marriage.

But there was something even more disturbing.

Daniel had known.

He had signed the agreement.

He had helped hide the truth.

And the baby shower had been designed to celebrate a pregnancy that Patricia had engineered without Vanessa's informed consent.

Vanessa sat down.

Her hands trembled.

"Why would she do this?""

Nobody answered.

Then Olivia remembered something.

She reached into her purse and pulled out the necklace Daniel had given Vanessa.

The silver heart.

The one with the hidden note.

"I found something inside it," she whispered.

Rebecca examined the necklace.

There was a tiny compartment beneath the clasp.

Olivia opened it.

A folded piece of paper slipped out.

It contained a handwritten message.

My greatest wish is to have a child who carries both of us. One day, our secret will become our family's greatest gift.

The message was signed:

*P + E.*

Patricia and Evan.

Vanessa began sobbing.

I stared at the initials.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"Sarah Morgan?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Andrew Collins. I'm Margaret Collins's son.""

I looked at Rebecca.

"How can I help you?""

He took a breath.

"My mother is alive.""

I felt my blood turn cold.

"That's impossible.""

"No, ma'am. She has been living under another name for three years.""

"Why are you calling me?""

His answer came quietly.

"Because she wants to testify.""

I gripped the phone.

"Testify about what?""

He paused.

May you like

Then he said:

"About the day Patricia Hayes paid her to witness your forged signature.""
