Chapter 9: The Night the Family Turned on Itself
Derrick reached Patricia's house just as the first emergency vehicle turned onto her street.
The fire wasn't large enough to threaten the house, but smoke rose from a metal barrel near the back fence. Several neighbors had gathered behind their fences, watching as Patricia argued with Richard beside the patio.
Jason stood near the kitchen door, holding a stack of papers.
“Derrick!”” he called.
Derrick hurried toward him.
“What happened?””
“Richard showed up with two boxes. Mom told me they were old business records and asked me to help destroy them.””
“Did you?””
“No. I saw Camille's name on a folder. When I asked what it was, Richard tried to take it from me.””
Jason held up the papers.
“I grabbed what I could.””
Richard turned at the sound of their voices.
“Give me those documents,” he snapped.
Jason stepped back.
“No.””
Richard strode toward him.
“Those papers belong to me.””
“They were in Mom's house.””
“And that makes them yours?””
Patricia rushed between them.
“Enough! Both of you!””
Derrick looked at the smoking barrel.
“What are you burning?””
“Old paperwork,” Patricia replied.
“It's none of your business.””
“Is that why Uncle Richard brought two boxes here after Helen started investigating the trust?””
Her face tightened.
“You've been talking to that attorney again.””
“Yes.””
Patricia looked toward Richard.
For a split second, fear crossed her expression.
Derrick saw it.
“Mom, did you forge Camille's beneficiary release?””
Patricia's mouth fell open.
“How dare you?””
“Did you?””
“I would never do something like that!””
Richard stepped forward.
“Derrick, you're being manipulated. Your wife is using this situation to destroy your mother's reputation.””
Derrick turned toward him.
“Then explain the account ending in 4421.””
Richard's expression changed.
The pause lasted less than a second, but it was enough.
Derrick continued.
“Explain why money from Dad's trust went into an account associated with your company. Explain why Mom gave me a document accusing Camille of taking the same amount that was transferred through your account.””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“Your father approved those transactions.””
“I have a video of him refusing to approve one.””
Patricia went still.
Richard looked at her.
It was the first time Derrick had seen his uncle appear genuinely frightened.
“You have a video?”” Richard asked.
“Yes.””
“Where did you get it?””
“From Dad's records.””
Richard took a step closer.
“You need to be careful. You have no idea what those documents show.””
“Then you shouldn't mind letting Helen review them.””
Richard's face darkened.
“You think your father was innocent? You think he understood every transaction in his own company?””
Derrick felt a surge of anger.
“I think he knew enough to tell you no.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“Your father was a sentimental old man. He wanted to save everyone, even people who didn't deserve it.””
“Is that why you tried to remove Camille from the trust?””
Richard looked toward Patricia.
She shook her head almost imperceptibly.
But Derrick had seen it.
His uncle turned back to him.
“I'm not discussing confidential business matters with you.””
“Then we'll discuss them with the attorneys.””
Richard lunged toward Jason and grabbed the folder from his hands.
Jason struggled to hold on.
“Let go!””
“Give it to me!””
The folder tore.
Papers scattered across the patio.
One sheet landed near Derrick's shoes.
He picked it up.
It was a printed email from Patricia to Richard.
The date was four years earlier.
Derrick has accepted the investment loan. He believes it came from an outside investor. Once the repayment is complete, we can move the remaining balance into the holding account.
Another paragraph followed.
Camille is becoming suspicious. If she asks questions, remind her that the family has already done enough for her. She has no reason to interfere in matters that don't concern her.
Derrick stared at the page.
Patricia had used his business crisis to conceal the source of the money.
He looked up.
“Mom, did you use Dad's trust to fund my company?””
Patricia's face crumpled.
“I was helping you.””
“You told me the money came from an investor.””
“You needed the money!””
“Then why didn't you tell me where it came from?””
“Because you would have refused!””
The words rang through the backyard.
Nobody moved.
Patricia pressed a hand against her chest.
“I was trying to save your business. Your father would have wanted me to help you.””
“Then why did you hide the transfers?””
“Because Richard said the paperwork would be complicated.””
Richard turned on her.
“Don't put this on me.””
Patricia stared at him.
“You told me the trustee would never investigate.””
“And you told me Raymond had authorized the amendment!””
“You said you had a lawyer who could handle it!””
Their voices rose, each accusation exposing another part of the arrangement.
Derrick stood motionless.
The family he had defended for years was falling apart in front of him.
Not because Camille had left.
Not because an attorney had asked questions.
But because people who had relied on silence were suddenly afraid of the truth.
Jason bent down to gather the scattered papers.
One sheet caught his attention.
“Derrick,” he said quietly.
“Look at this.””
It was a draft of the beneficiary release.
The document included instructions for replacing the original signature page with a scanned image.
Below the instructions was a name.
Richard Bennett.
But beside it was a second name.
Patricia Bennett.
Both had signed the draft as preparers.
Derrick photographed the page.
Richard noticed.
“Delete that.””
“No.””
“Derrick, delete it now.””
Derrick took a step backward.
“Don't come near me.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“You have no idea what you're getting yourself into.””
“Then explain it.””
Richard looked toward the house.
For a moment, Derrick thought his uncle might try to escape.
Instead, Richard reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.
“You want the truth?”” he said.
“Fine. Your father was going to change everything. He was going to remove me from the business, take control of the investment accounts, and leave your mother with nothing but the house.””
Patricia stared at him.
“Richard, stop talking.””
“No! I'm tired of protecting you.””
He turned toward Derrick.
“Your father discovered that the investment company was losing money. He thought I had mismanaged it. He threatened to report me to the licensing board and sue me for damages.””
“Did you mismanage it?””
Richard's silence was answer enough.
Derrick felt sick.
“Then you stole from him?””
“I borrowed money to cover the losses.””
“Without permission?””
Richard looked away.
Patricia began to cry.
“I was trying to protect my brother.””
Derrick turned toward her.
“You helped him hide the losses?””
“He told me he would repay everything.””
“With Dad's money?””
“With money that was going to the family anyway!””
“Camille was part of that family.””
Patricia flinched.
Derrick continued.
“You told me she was greedy. You told me she was trying to steal my inheritance. You made me believe she was the problem.””
“I never wanted you to lose her!””
“Then why did you keep trying to destroy her?””
Patricia's eyes filled with tears.
“Because your father trusted her more than he trusted me.””
The confession came out quietly.
For the first time, Patricia wasn't trying to sound righteous.
She sounded wounded.
She looked toward the house, where the living-room curtains moved in the evening breeze.
“Raymond told me he wanted Camille to have financial security. He said she was the only person in the family who helped without demanding anything in return.””
Derrick swallowed.
Patricia wiped her face.
“I thought if Camille had access to the trust, she'd eventually leave you. I thought she would take the money and walk away, and I'd lose my son.””
“So you tried to take the money from her first?””
“I was protecting you!””
“No, Mom. You were protecting your control over me.””
Patricia stared at him.
The words seemed to strike something she hadn't expected to hear from her son.
Then Richard spoke.
“Don't let her make you the villain, Patricia. We both agreed to the transfers.””
She spun toward him.
“You told me the account was temporary!””
“It was temporary.””
“You told me the documents were legal!””
“I told you what you wanted to hear.””
Patricia slapped him.
The sound echoed across the patio.
Richard grabbed her wrist.
“Don't touch me.””
Jason stepped between them.
“Let her go.””
Richard released her with a shove.
Patricia stumbled against a chair.
Derrick moved toward her instinctively, but stopped before reaching her.
He could care about his mother without pretending she hadn't done something terrible.
A siren sounded from the street.
A neighbor had called the authorities after seeing smoke and hearing the argument. Two officers approached the backyard, followed by a fire-service employee who examined the barrel and instructed everyone to keep clear of it.
One officer asked who owned the property.
Patricia raised her hand.
“I'm the homeowner.””
“Ma'am, we received a report of documents being burned. Is there any reason we should be concerned about evidence related to a financial investigation?””
Patricia opened her mouth.
Richard interrupted.
“This is a private family matter.””
The officer looked at him.
“Sir, I asked the homeowner.””
Patricia glanced at the barrel.
Then she looked at the papers scattered across the patio.
For a moment, Derrick thought she might finally tell the truth.
Instead, she pointed at Richard.
“He brought the documents here. He told me to destroy them.””
Richard's face turned crimson.
“You said we were in this together!””
The officer stepped between them.
“Both of you need to stop talking over each other. We'll take separate statements.””
Derrick gave the officers the photographs he had taken and explained that the documents were connected to an ongoing review by the estate attorney.
He didn't accuse anyone of a specific crime. He simply provided the information and contact details for Helen Whitaker.
The officers instructed everyone to preserve the remaining documents and avoid further handling until the attorney could arrange proper collection.
Richard was furious.
Patricia was shaking.
Jason looked as though he might be sick.
As the officers finished speaking with the family, Derrick's phone rang.
Camille.
He answered immediately.
“Are you all right?”” she asked.
“I'm okay. What's happened?””
“Denise just received a call from Helen. They found evidence that the beneficiary release was assembled using an old signature scan. Helen believes the document may have been created after your father died.””
Derrick glanced at the scattered papers.
“We found a draft of the release. Patricia and Richard are listed as preparers.””
Camille went silent.
Then she asked, “Did your mother admit anything?””
“She admitted that she helped Richard conceal transfers from Dad's trust. She says she thought she was protecting me.””
Camille exhaled slowly.
“I'm sorry.””
Derrick looked toward Patricia.
She sat alone on the patio, her magenta blouse wrinkled, her pearl earrings crooked.
For the first time, she looked less like the powerful woman who had controlled every family gathering and more like someone who had run out of explanations.
“I'm not sure what happens next,” he admitted.
“Neither am I.””
“Camille, I know I've said this before, but I'm sorry. I should have believed you when you told me something was wrong.””
“You should have.””
“I can't change that.””
“No. You can't.””
He swallowed.
“But I can stop asking you to carry the consequences of my family's choices.””
Camille was quiet for a moment.
“Then do that, Derrick. Whatever happens with the trust, let the truth come out. Don't try to protect your mother by asking me to stay silent. Don't try to protect yourself by making me responsible for fixing things.””
“I won't.””
“Good.””
Before ending the call, she added, “Helen told me my father's-in-law's original statement may be important. I have the sealed copy he gave me. I'll bring it to Denise tomorrow so the attorneys can preserve it properly.””
Derrick closed his eyes.
“Thank you.””
“Don't thank me yet. I'm doing this because your father deserves to have the truth preserved.””
The call ended.
A few minutes later, the officers departed after documenting the scene and providing instructions for preserving the records.
Richard was told not to remove any further documents from the property while the dispute was being reviewed. He left in a fury, warning Patricia that she had made a serious mistake by turning against him.
Patricia remained on the patio.
Derrick approached her.
“Mom.””
She looked up.
“Are you happy now?””
He stopped.
“Happy?””
“You've destroyed your uncle. You've humiliated me. You've dragged the whole family into this.””
Derrick shook his head.
“I didn't create these documents. I didn't move the money. I didn't forge Camille's signature.””
Patricia's eyes filled again.
“I was afraid.””
“So was Camille. Every time you insulted her, every time you threatened to exclude her, every time you made her feel like she had to earn the right to sit at our table.””
Patricia looked away.
Derrick continued.
“You told me she was the reason our family was falling apart. But the family was already broken. You just needed someone to blame.””
For a long time, Patricia said nothing.
Then she whispered, “Your father always said you were too trusting.””
Derrick nodded.
“Maybe I was.””
He turned toward the house.
“But I'm not going to let you use that trust to hurt Camille anymore.””
He left his mother's home without offering to pay for anything, without promising to return the next morning, and without asking her to forgive him for finally saying no.
As he drove away, he received a message from Helen.
We have reviewed the latest materials. There is one final document we need to discuss with you and Camille.
A second message followed.
It appears your father changed the trust instructions shortly before his death. The amendment was never properly registered, but the original signed copy may still be legally significant.
Derrick pulled into a parking lot and opened the attachment.
The amendment named a new independent trustee.
It also included a clause explaining what should happen if either Patricia or Richard attempted to interfere with the beneficiaries' rights.
Derrick read the clause twice.
Then he looked at the final page.
His father had written a personal note in the margin.
If they try to turn Camille against Derrick, or Derrick against Camille, make sure both understand that the money was never meant to decide whom they should love.
Beneath that note was a final instruction.
The person who holds the original amendment must deliver it to the trustee before the next scheduled distribution.
Derrick stared at the words.
He had assumed Camille's sealed copy contained only a statement about the transfers.
But if his father had also given her the original amendment, she might possess the one document that could determine who controlled the remaining trust assets.
He called her.
“Camille, I need to ask you something.””
“What's wrong?””
“Does the sealed envelope your father gave you contain an original trust amendment?””
She was silent for several seconds.
“Yes.””
Derrick gripped the steering wheel.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I hadn't opened it. Your father asked me to keep it sealed until Helen could verify the circumstances. I was waiting for my attorney to arrange that.””
“Camille, the amendment may determine who controls the remaining trust.””
“I know.””
“Then we need to get it to Helen immediately.””
“We will. Denise is arranging the transfer.””
He swallowed.
“Is there anything else in the envelope?””
Camille's voice became cautious.
“Yes.””
“What?””
“A letter addressed to you.””
Derrick's heart began to pound.
“What does it say?””
“I haven't read it. It's sealed with the amendment.””
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
His father had left him a letter, a trust, and a warning about the people he loved.
Now another letter waited in an envelope that had been entrusted to his wife.
And whatever Raymond had written, he had clearly intended Derrick to read it only after the truth about the estate came to light.
May you like
The next morning, the original documents would be placed before Helen Whitaker.
And Derrick would finally learn why his father had chosen Camille to protect the truth when he no longer could.
