Amused

Chapter 8: The Father Who Never Stopped Looking

Jonathan Reed lived in a modest white house on the outskirts of Hartford, Connecticut.

There were no expensive cars in the driveway.

No security cameras.

No iron gates.

Just a small garden, a wooden porch, and a wind chime moving gently in the afternoon breeze.

Victoria drove.

Samuel insisted on accompanying us, explaining that meeting someone connected to a potential criminal investigation without legal representation was unwise.

I didn't argue.

I was too busy staring at the photograph Jonathan had sent.

He looked older now, of course.

His dark hair had turned gray.

But the green eyes were unmistakable.

My eyes.

When we reached the house, a man was standing behind the front window.

He opened the door before we knocked.

For several seconds, he simply looked at me.

Then his face crumpled.

"Eleanor?""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

He stepped forward, then stopped himself.

"Can I hug you?""

I hadn't prepared for that question.

I didn't know what I wanted.

I had spent twenty-two years believing my father was Richard Carter.

Then I had spent two days discovering that my entire family history was built on lies.

Now a stranger who shared my eyes was standing in front of me, asking permission to hug me.

"Yes," I whispered.

Jonathan wrapped his arms around me.

He held me carefully, as if he were afraid I might disappear.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

I started crying.

Not because I suddenly loved him.

Not because twenty-two missing years could be repaired with one embrace.

But because someone had finally apologized for leaving me alone.

Inside, the house smelled of coffee and old books.

Jonathan had photographs on the mantelpiece.

Most were landscapes.

One showed a young woman holding a baby.

I recognized the woman immediately.

My mother.

The baby was me.

"Why do you have this?"" I asked.

Jonathan looked at it.

"Because I never stopped being your father, even when I wasn't allowed to act like one.""

He sat across from me.

"I wrote you letters every birthday.""

"Where are they?""

He pointed toward a wooden cabinet.

"All of them.""

I opened the cabinet.

There were envelopes arranged in boxes.

Twenty-two years of letters.

Some were addressed to Eleanor.

Others were simply marked:

My daughter.

I picked up the first one.

The date was my first birthday.

My hands trembled.

"Why didn't you send them?""

Jonathan's expression darkened.

"Because Margaret returned the first three. After that, someone came to my house and told me that if I tried contacting you again, I would lose more than my parental rights.""

"Who?""

"Richard.""

I looked at Victoria.

She had gone very still.

Jonathan continued.

"At first, I thought he was simply trying to keep me away from you. Then I discovered something about the foundation.""

He stood and walked toward a bookshelf.

He removed a thick folder.

"Your grandfather had asked me to help review some financial transactions shortly before I disappeared.""

I leaned forward.

"What did you find?""

"Transfers from the scholarship fund into private companies. The first few looked like administrative expenses. But the money eventually moved into accounts controlled by Richard.""

He placed a document on the table.

"Your grandfather wanted me to prepare a report.""

"Did you?""

"Yes. But before I could deliver it, Richard discovered what I was doing.""

Jonathan sat down.

"He came to see me one evening. He told me that Margaret had already agreed to everything. He offered me money to leave.""

"Did you accept?""

Jonathan looked at me.

"I accepted because he threatened your mother.""

I frowned.

"Mom?""

"Margaret told me she had received threats too. She said Richard had photographs and documents that could destroy her reputation and take you away.""

I stared at him.

"What photographs?""

Jonathan hesitated.

"Evidence that Margaret had falsified several financial agreements before she married Richard.""

Victoria interrupted.

"Which agreements?""

Jonathan looked at her.

"Some connected to the original foundation accounts. Others connected to William's personal estate.""

Victoria leaned forward.

"That means Margaret was involved before the first major transfer.""

"Yes.""

I felt sick.

"Then why did Grandpa pay you?""

"Because he believed I could disappear safely if I had enough money to start over. He also believed that if I remained, Richard would use me to control Margaret and eventually reach you.""

I shook my head.

"That doesn't explain why you never came back.""

Jonathan looked down.

"Because two years later, William called me.""

My attention sharpened.

"What did he say?""

"He told me Richard had become more dangerous. He said the foundation's accounts were being manipulated, and he needed my help to stop him.""

"Did you help?""

"I tried.""

Jonathan opened another folder.

Inside were copies of financial statements, handwritten notes, and a recording transcript.

"Your grandfather had discovered that Richard was using the foundation to finance a separate investment company. But he couldn't remove Richard without proving that the transfers were intentional.""

Samuel examined the documents.

"These are potentially important.""

Jonathan nodded.

"There's more.""

He reached into the folder and removed a small envelope.

"This was given to me by William a week before he died.""

I recognized the handwriting.

My grandfather's.

Jonathan handed it to me.

I opened it.

Jonathan,

I have made a mistake I cannot repair. Richard has taken control of more than the foundation. He has convinced Margaret that the only way to protect herself is to keep lying.

I need you to understand something. Eleanor must never be told that she was the reason you disappeared unless we can establish what really happened.

There was an incident at the hospital the night she was born.

I believe Richard knows more about it than he has admitted.

I looked up.

"What incident?""

Jonathan took a deep breath.

"When you were born, there was a complication.""

I waited.

"Your mother experienced severe bleeding. The doctors believed she might not survive. You were placed in intensive care for several days.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Was I all right?""

"Eventually, yes. But there was an issue with the hospital's consent forms.""

"What issue?""

"Richard had signed documents claiming he was your legal guardian before the adoption had been completed.""

I frowned.

"How?""

"He had already arranged for your mother to name him as your father on certain private records.""

"But he wasn't my biological father.""

"Exactly.""

Jonathan leaned forward.

"Your grandfather discovered that Richard had used a false acknowledgment of paternity to gain access to your hospital records and insurance information.""

Victoria looked shocked.

"That would have required someone at the hospital to cooperate.""

Jonathan nodded.

"Someone did.""

He showed us a name.

Dr. Peter Lawson.

The attending physician listed on my original birth records.

Samuel immediately photographed the document.

"Do you know where he is now?""

Jonathan shook his head.

"He retired years ago. But he sent me a letter last year.""

"Why?""

"Because he was dying.""

Jonathan handed me another envelope.

Inside was a handwritten statement.

I participated in the alteration of Eleanor Carter's original hospital records under pressure from Richard Carter.

I was told the change was necessary to protect the family.

I later learned that the documentation had been used to support fraudulent financial claims and to conceal the existence of Jonathan Reed.

I read the statement again.

"Why would my birth records be connected to financial fraud?""

Jonathan looked at me.

"Because Richard needed to establish himself as your legal father before William's adoption agreement was finalized. It gave him access to the original family trust administration.""

I turned toward Samuel.

"Is that possible?""

"It needs legal examination, but the documents suggest that the original records were deliberately altered.""

I felt a cold wave pass through me.

My parents hadn't merely hidden my biological father.

They had manipulated official documents to create a legal identity that served their financial interests.

And my grandfather had spent years trying to undo it.

Jonathan reached across the table.

"There's something else I need to tell you.""

I looked at him.

"Go ahead.""

"Your grandfather didn't just leave you the foundation.""

He opened a separate envelope.

Inside was a property deed.

The address was in Boston.

It belonged to an old building near the university.

I recognized it.

It was the building where the Carter Foundation had originally operated its scholarship office.

Jonathan explained that William had transferred ownership into a private trust before his death.

The trust had been established for the benefit of the foundation's future scholarship recipients.

But there was a condition.

The property could only be sold or transferred with the approval of the independent trustee.

My name appeared on the document.

"So Dad can't sell it?""

"Not without your authorization.""

Jonathan looked at Samuel.

"And that's important because Richard has been trying to sell that building for months.""

Samuel frowned.

"To whom?""

Jonathan handed him another paper.

A purchase agreement.

The buyer was a company called Northbridge Development Group.

The proposed sale price was $6.2 million.

Samuel read the document carefully.

Then he looked at me.

"Do you know who owns Northbridge Development Group?""

I shook my head.

Jonathan answered.

"Richard Carter.""

Silence.

My father had been preparing to sell a property that belonged to the scholarship trust to a company he controlled.

And he had apparently planned to use the proceeds without authorization.

I looked at Jonathan.

"How do you know all this?""

He stood.

"Because I was working with William until the night he died.""

He walked toward a locked cabinet and removed a small black recorder.

"This is the original audio file.""

I stared at it.

"The one from Grandpa's office?""

"No. The recording from the night he collapsed.""

Jonathan placed it on the table.

"I recorded the conversation because I knew Richard would deny what happened.""

Samuel immediately asked him not to play it until it could be preserved properly.

But Jonathan looked at me.

"There's something you need to understand first.""

He pressed a button.

A man's voice emerged.

Richard.

"Father, sign the documents. We can settle this without involving Eleanor.""

My grandfather answered.

"She has nothing to do with your business.""

"She has everything to do with it. Her name is on the trust.""

"Because I wanted her protected.""

Richard laughed.

"Then you've made a terrible mistake.""

A chair scraped.

Then my grandfather said:

"Richard, what happened to the scholarship money?""

My father's voice dropped.

"You're not going to like the answer.""

The recording stopped.

Jonathan looked at me.

"There's another file.""

He turned the recorder over.

A second label was written in black ink.

*THE NIGHT WILLIAM CARTER DIED — FINAL MINUTES.*

Samuel reached for it.

But before he could take it, my phone rang.

The caller ID showed Daniel.

I answered.

"Daniel?""

His voice was barely audible.

"Ellie, I need you to listen.""

"Where are you?""

"At home.""

"Are you safe?""

A pause.

Then he whispered:

"Mom just told me what really happened to Grandpa.""

I gripped the phone.

"What?""

Daniel started crying.

"She said Dad didn't just argue with him that night.""

He took a shaky breath.

"She said Dad locked him in the study.""

I felt the room go cold.

May you like

Then Daniel said:

"And she told me I helped cover it up without knowing what I was signing.""
