Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Left Behind

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Not Rachel.

Not me.

Not even the world outside that abandoned building.

It felt like time had stopped.

Because there are some truths your mind refuses to accept immediately.

You can hear the words.

You can understand them.

But something inside you keeps saying:

No.

That cannot be real.

Marcus was not just the man who broke my heart.

He was connected to the darkest question my family had carried for years.

My father’s death.

I looked at Rachel.

“Tell me everything.””

Her face tightened.

“Nia…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“But I need to know.””

She looked down.

“I was there.””

“Where?””

“At the warehouse.””

My heart sank.

“What warehouse?””

“The place where your father met Marcus that night.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

Rachel took a slow breath.

“Because your father was going to expose him.””

The words were heavy.

“Expose him for what?””

“Everything.””

She opened the file again.

“Your father discovered Marcus had been creating fake accounts. Moving money between companies. Making deals under other people’s names.””

I looked at the documents.

“And he confronted him?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with pain.

“I don’t know exactly.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t know?””

“I heard them arguing.””

“What did they say?””

She closed her eyes.

“I heard your father say, ‘You’re not going to take my daughter’s future too.’”

My breath caught.

My daughter’s future.

Me.

Even then, my father was protecting me.

“What did Marcus say?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then:

“He said your father should have stayed out of things that didn’t concern him.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What happened after that?””

Rachel looked away.

“That’s where it gets complicated.””

I hated those words.

Complicated.

The word everyone used when the truth was ugly.

“Rachel.””

She looked at me.

“Your father left the warehouse alive.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He walked out.””

“Then how did he die?””

Rachel’s lips trembled.

“I don’t know.””

The answer frustrated me.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“You saw him leave.””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

She looked at the floor.

“I saw Marcus follow him.””

I left the building with a storm inside my head.

Rachel followed me to my car.

“Nia.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“You need to understand something.””

I turned around.

“What?””

“Marcus is going to try to make you doubt everything.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone already has.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her expression was serious.

“I mean everything.””

I stared at her.

“He will mix truth with lies.””

I thought about that.

Because that was exactly what Marcus did.

He never created completely fake stories.

He took pieces of reality.

Then he twisted them.

“What do you think happened that night?””

Rachel looked toward the building.

“I think Marcus knows more than he says.””

That wasn’t enough.

Not anymore.

“I need proof.””

Rachel nodded.

“I know.””

“Where do I find it?””

She looked at me.

“Your father left something.””

“What?””

“A backup.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

That answer almost made me angry.

But then she continued.

“Only one person would know.””

“Who?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Your mother.””

When I arrived at my mother’s house, she knew immediately why I was there.

She opened the door.

Saw my face.

And whispered:

“He told you.””

I stopped.

“Who?””

“Marcus.””

My chest tightened.

“So you knew.””

My mother looked away.

“Nia…”

“You knew about Dad.””

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“I knew he was afraid.””

“Afraid of Marcus?””

She nodded.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your father made me promise.””

I stepped inside.

“Mom, I need the truth.””

She closed the door.

Then walked to an old cabinet near the living room.

She opened a drawer.

Inside was a small black box.

I stared.

“What is that?””

“Your father’s.””

My heart started racing.

“He left it before he died.””

I reached for it.

My mother stopped me.

“Nia.””

“What?””

“If you open it…”

She looked terrified.

“You can’t pretend you don’t know anymore.””

I swallowed.

“I already know.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You know what happened to your marriage.””

Her voice broke.

“This is about your family.””

I opened the box.

Inside was a small recorder.

A flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

My father’s handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

My hands trembled as I unfolded it.

*Nia, if you are reading this, something happened that I could not prevent.*

I covered my mouth.

My father.

Speaking to me.

After all these years.

*I need you to understand one thing: Marcus is not the only person who lied.*

I looked at my mother.

She started crying.

I continued reading.

*People will tell you I trusted the wrong person. They will tell you I made mistakes. That may be true. But the biggest mistake I made was believing Marcus could be reasoned with.*

My heartbeat increased.

Then came the final sentence.

*The truth about Marcus is hidden in the recording.*

I picked up the recorder.

My fingers shook as I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

My father.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably him.

“If you’re hearing this, I’m probably gone.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know who will find this. I don’t know who I can trust.””

A pause.

Then:

“Marcus Hale is not who he says he is.””

I looked at my mother.

She covered her mouth.

My father continued.

“He has spent years creating identities. Relationships. Businesses. He survives by making people believe they are special.””

My chest tightened.

“He does not love people.””

The recording crackled.

“He uses them.””

A tear rolled down my face.

Because I had heard those words before.

Not from my father.

From reality.

Then my father said something that changed everything.

“But Marcus is not the person who worries me most.””

I froze.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“The person helping him is someone close to me.””

My mother looked terrified.

My breathing stopped.

Someone close to him.

Someone in the family.

My father’s voice lowered.

“I believe Marcus did not act alone.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

The silence was unbearable.

Then my mother whispered:

“I never wanted you to hear that.””

I looked at her.

“Who was he talking about?””

She cried.

“I don’t know.””

I stared.

“Mom.””

“I swear.””

“Then why did Dad think someone close to him was helping Marcus?””

She looked down.

“Because someone had access to everything.””

“What everything?””

“Your father’s accounts. His documents. His plans.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

My mother didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

“Who?””

Finally, she whispered:

“Your sister.””

The room went silent.

“No.””

“Nia…”

“No.””

I backed away.

“She wouldn’t.””

“I don’t know what happened.””

“You think she helped Marcus?””

“I think your father suspected everyone.””

My phone rang.

My sister.

I stared at the screen.

My mother looked at me.

“Answer it.””

I did.

“Nia?””

Her voice sounded urgent.

“Where are you?””

“At Mom’s.””

A pause.

“Did you find it?””

My blood ran cold.

“Find what?””

Silence.

Too long.

Then:

“Nia…”

“How did you know I was looking for something?””

She didn’t answer.

My hand tightened around the phone.

“You knew about the box.””

“Nia, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You knew.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone says that.””

“Nia, please.””

“Did you help Marcus?””

Silence.

And then I heard something.

Not her voice.

Someone else.

A man.

In the background.

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

Marcus.

My sister whispered:

“Nia, don’t hang up.””

I stood frozen.

“Why is Marcus with you?””

No answer.

Then Marcus spoke.

Directly.

“Nia.””

My entire body went still.

“You finally found the recording.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“How are you there?””

A pause.

Then he said:

“Because your sister was never protecting you from me.””

My heart stopped.

“She was protecting me from you.””

The line went dead.

And in that moment, I realized something terrifying.

I had spent the entire time trying to uncover Marcus’s secrets.

May you like

But I had never asked the most important question.

Why did everyone who knew the truth keep choosing him?
