Amused

Chapter 8: The Mother Who Chose a Side

The video froze on the screen.

My mother.

Standing inside Daniel’s house.

Inside his office.

Four days before the wedding.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Patricia.

She stared at her own image on the screen like she was seeing a stranger.

“Mom?””

My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.

She didn’t answer.

“Mom, explain.””

Her lips moved.

Nothing came out.

The ballroom had already witnessed one betrayal that day.

Now everyone was waiting to see if there would be another.

Daniel looked at Patricia.

“You were in my office?””

My mother looked down.

“I can explain.””

Those four words.

Again.

Everyone always said them after the damage was done.

Daniel took a step forward.

“When?””

Patricia swallowed.

“Last week.””

“Why?””

She looked toward me.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because even now, even after everything, she was looking at me like she was asking permission to tell the truth.

“Mom.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was trying to help Vanessa.””

The sentence landed like a stone.

Not because I was surprised.

Because some part of me had still hoped.

Still hoped that maybe this time, my mother would choose me.

But she didn’t.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You helped her?””

Patricia shook her head quickly.

“No. Not like that.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“Then explain why you were in his office.””

My mother looked at the floor.

“I didn’t know what Vanessa was planning.””

Nobody believed her.

Not because we wanted to accuse her.

Because the evidence was right there.

Her walking into the room.

Opening drawers.

Looking through files.

Taking pictures.

The video continued.

My mother moved around Daniel’s office.

She opened the desk drawer.

Then another.

Then she stopped.

She found something.

The screen zoomed slightly.

A folder.

The same type of folder Rachel had brought.

My heart tightened.

“What was that?””

My mother whispered:

“I don’t remember.””

I stared at her.

“You don’t remember?””

She looked ashamed.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked at me.

“Losing both my daughters.””

That answer made something inside me crack.

Because once again, she had made it about Vanessa and me.

Not about what she did.

Not about what she allowed.

About her fear.

Daniel looked at her.

“Patricia, you entered my home without permission.””

“I know.””

“You searched my office.””

“I know.””

“You gave something to Vanessa.””

My mother started crying.

“I thought I was helping her fix things.””

Rachel’s eyes narrowed.

“What did she tell you?””

Patricia wiped her face.

“She said Daniel was hiding money.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“What?””

“She said she was worried he was going to leave her with nothing.””

Rachel shook her head.

“And you believed that?””

My mother looked embarrassed.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

Then I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

Vanessa had never only manipulated Daniel.

She manipulated everyone.

She knew exactly which story to tell each person.

To Daniel, she was the loving future wife.

To my mother, she was the daughter who needed protection.

To the guests, she was the perfect bride.

To me, she was the sister who wanted me to disappear.

And she had built each version carefully.

My mother looked at me.

“Claire.””

I didn’t answer.

“Please.””

I looked at Lily.

She was watching me.

Waiting.

I didn’t want her to see me break.

So I stayed calm.

“You knew she hated me.””

My mother looked away.

“I knew you two had problems.””

“No.””

My voice became firmer.

“You knew.””

She said nothing.

“You knew Vanessa always compared herself to me.””

“Yes.””

“You knew she treated Lily differently.””

A tear fell down my mother’s cheek.

“Yes.””

“And you still helped her.””

The silence answered.

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

I wasn’t angry at him.

But I needed to say it.

“I spent my whole life thinking Vanessa was the problem.””

I looked at my mother.

“But she wasn’t the only one.””

Patricia covered her mouth.

“I made mistakes.””

“Yes.””

My voice trembled.

“You did.””

That was the first time I had ever said it.

Not screamed it.

Not used it as a weapon.

Just said it.

The truth.

My mother had failed me.

And admitting it hurt.

But pretending otherwise hurt more.

Suddenly, the ballroom doors opened.

An officer walked back inside.

Everyone turned.

“Mr. Carter?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Yes?””

“We need to speak with you privately.””

Daniel frowned.

“About what?””

The officer looked toward the screen.

“About another development.””

Rachel immediately became alert.

“What happened?””

The officer hesitated.

“We found another person connected to the investigation.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

The officer looked at the folder in his hand.

“Someone who made a statement claiming they were pressured by Ms. Vanessa Carter.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Who?””

The officer opened the folder.

Then he said a name.

A name that made my blood run cold.

“Michael Reed.””

I froze.

Nobody else seemed to understand.

But I did.

Because Michael Reed wasn’t a stranger.

He was Lily’s father.

My ex-husband.

The man who disappeared eight years ago.

The man who left me alone with a newborn baby.

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire?””

I couldn’t speak.

Rachel noticed my reaction.

“You know him?””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“How?””

I stared at the officer.

“Because he’s my daughter’s father.””

The room went silent.

Even Lily looked confused.

She had only known Michael as a name.

A story.

A person who existed somewhere far away.

Her father.

But never someone who showed up.

Never someone who called.

Never someone who asked if she was okay.

Daniel looked at the officer.

“What does he have to do with Vanessa?””

The officer answered:

“He claims Ms. Carter contacted him several months ago.””

My heart started pounding.

“For what?””

The officer looked at his notes.

“To discuss custody.””

I felt sick.

“Custody?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Why would Vanessa care about custody?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

Vanessa had spent years trying to prove I wasn’t enough.

Not rich enough.

Not successful enough.

Not important enough.

And now I understood.

She didn’t just want my inheritance.

She wanted to destroy the one thing I had built without her.

My life with Lily.

The officer continued.

“Mr. Reed provided evidence suggesting Ms. Carter was planning to use your divorce history and financial records to challenge your custody.””

I closed my eyes.

The room spun.

My daughter.

My little girl.

The person Vanessa called worthless.

The person she had secretly tried to take away.

Lily stepped closer.

“Mom?””

I looked down.

I forced myself to smile.

“I’m here.””

She whispered:

“Are we going to be okay?””

That question almost destroyed me.

Because for the first time that day, I wasn’t sure.

I held her hand.

“Yes.””

But my voice was quieter.

Because now I knew.

The wedding disaster wasn’t the end of Vanessa’s plan.

It was only the beginning.

Then Daniel’s phone rang again.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at him.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A voice came through.

A man’s voice.

Michael.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Who is this?””

The voice replied:

“Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

“I need you to listen carefully.””

Daniel looked at me.

Then the phone.

The man continued:

“Vanessa wasn’t trying to marry you for your money.””

A pause.

“She was trying to use you to get access to something else.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

The voice became quieter.

“Claire’s father left her more than an inheritance.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

Michael answered:

“The trust contains evidence your father-in-law collected before he died.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel gripped the phone tighter.

“Evidence of what?””

The line went silent.

Then Michael said:

“Evidence that Vanessa has been lying about who she really is.””

The call ended.

The ballroom remained frozen.

And for the first time, I wondered if the person I had spent my entire life fighting against…

was someone I never truly knew at all.
