Amused

Chapter 2: The Flash Drive in Her Little Hands

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Lily.

Not the man standing behind our table.

Even the noise of the ballroom seemed to fade into the background.

“Video of Vanessa?”” I repeated.

The man looked around quickly, like he was afraid someone might hear him.

His name was Ethan. He had been Daniel’s best friend since college. I remembered him from the few family gatherings I had attended during Vanessa’s engagement.

He was always polite.

Quiet.

The kind of person who noticed things without saying much.

But right now, his face looked terrified.

Lily held the flash drive tighter.

“Mom,” she whispered.

I immediately reached for her hand.

“It’s okay.””

But I wasn’t sure if I was saying it to her or myself.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Where did she find it?””

I looked at Lily.

“Sweetheart?””

She glanced between us.

“In Uncle Daniel’s office.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What office?””

“At the house.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“What house?””

“The one where Aunt Vanessa and Uncle Daniel live.””

A cold feeling moved through my stomach.

Because Lily had never been alone at Vanessa’s house.

Not once.

“Lily,” I said carefully, “tell me exactly what happened.””

She looked down at her yellow cardigan.

“I was there last weekend.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Grandma brought me because you were working.””

My mother.

Of course.

I remembered that Saturday.

I had spent twelve hours at school preparing grades and lesson plans. My mother had offered to take Lily for the afternoon.

“I wanted to help,” Patricia had said.

At the time, I was grateful.

Now, I wondered what else had happened while I was away.

Lily continued.

“Grandma was helping Aunt Vanessa choose pictures for the wedding. I got bored, so I walked around.””

Ethan looked at me.

“She went into Daniel’s office?””

Lily nodded.

“The door was open.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“What did you see?””

She hesitated.

“I saw Uncle Daniel arguing with someone.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

The answer made Ethan straighten.

“Was it a man?””

“No.””

“A woman?””

Lily nodded.

“Yes.””

My mouth went dry.

“What did she look like?””

Lily closed her eyes, trying to remember.

“She had red hair.””

Ethan looked away.

That reaction told me everything.

He knew something.

“Ethan,” I said.

He didn’t answer.

“Ethan.””

Finally, he looked back at me.

“There’s something you need to know.””

The way he said it made my chest tighten.

Before he could continue, a loud voice came from across the ballroom.

“Claire!””

Vanessa.

She was standing near the dance floor.

The photographer beside her.

And everyone was watching.

Of course they were.

She had noticed we weren’t sitting quietly enough.

I stood slowly.

Ethan stepped back.

“Don’t show anyone that drive yet.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if what’s on it is what I think it is…”

He stopped.

“What?””

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

“Daniel needs to see it first.””

I looked down at Lily.

My daughter had spent the last hour being humiliated by people who were supposed to love her.

And now she was holding something that could change everything.

I put my hand over hers.

“Stay here with Ethan.””

She looked worried.

“But Mom—”

“I’ll be right back.””

I walked toward Vanessa.

Every step felt different this time.

When I entered the ballroom, I wasn’t the woman trying to avoid attention.

I was the woman who knew something they didn’t.

Vanessa smiled as I approached.

“There she is.””

She looked at the photographer.

“This is my sister Claire.””

The way she said my name made it sound like an apology.

The photographer smiled politely.

“Family photos?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes. But just immediate family.””

I looked at her.

“Immediate family?””

She glanced at Lily sitting in the corner.

“She can stay there.””

The photographer looked uncomfortable.

“Shouldn’t the child be included?””

Vanessa laughed lightly.

“Oh, Lily isn’t really part of the photo theme.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Not because of me.

Because I saw my daughter watching.

Waiting.

Hoping someone would choose her.

I turned back to Vanessa.

“You should be careful what you say today.””

Her smile disappeared slightly.

“Excuse me?””

I stepped closer.

“You never know who is listening.””

For the first time all afternoon, Vanessa looked uncertain.

Then she laughed.

“Is that supposed to scare me?””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“It’s supposed to warn you.””

Her expression hardened.

“You always do this, Claire.””

“Do what?””

“Act like you’re better than everyone because you struggle.””

I almost laughed.

“Struggle?””

She crossed her arms.

“You think being broke makes you noble?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

I looked toward Lily.

“It makes me responsible.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“You always wanted people to admire you for being the victim.””

That was when I realized something.

Vanessa didn’t hate my old dress.

She didn’t hate my job.

She didn’t hate my divorce.

She hated that I had survived things she thought should have destroyed me.

Before I could answer, Daniel walked over.

He looked perfect.

Black tuxedo.

Perfect smile.

A man about to marry the woman he loved.

But when his eyes met mine, his smile faded.

“Claire?””

His voice was careful.

“Is everything okay?””

Vanessa immediately stepped between us.

“Everything is fine.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Vanessa?””

She smiled.

“Claire is just upset because she doesn’t understand how weddings work.””

I watched Daniel’s face.

Something was wrong.

Not with him.

With her.

There was a flicker of fear in Vanessa’s eyes.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

Then Ethan appeared beside us.

“Daniel.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“Ethan?””

They stared at each other.

The room around us continued moving.

Guests laughed.

Glasses clinked.

A photographer adjusted his camera.

But the four of us stood frozen.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“What happened?””

Ethan looked at me.

Then at Lily.

Then back at Daniel.

“Your fiancée’s wedding gift from the past just arrived.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Ethan ignored her.

“Daniel, I think you need to see something.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Ethan looked toward the back table.

“The flash drive.””

The color drained from Vanessa’s face.

It happened so quickly that if I hadn’t been watching her, I might have missed it.

But I saw it.

And so did Daniel.

“Vanessa?”” he said.

She recovered immediately.

“What?””

“What flash drive?””

Her voice was too fast.

Too defensive.

Daniel noticed.

“What flash drive is he talking about?””

Vanessa smiled.

“I have no idea.””

Ethan shook his head.

“Don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Pretend.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re ruining my wedding.””

“No,” Ethan said quietly.

“I’m trying to stop you from marrying someone without knowing the truth.””

A silence formed around us.

Not the entire ballroom.

Not yet.

But enough people nearby had started listening.

Vanessa looked at me.

And suddenly, I understood.

She wasn’t looking at Ethan.

She wasn’t looking at Daniel.

She was looking at Lily.

My daughter.

The little girl she had called worthless.

Because Vanessa knew.

She knew Lily had found something.

She knew the flash drive existed.

And she was afraid.

Vanessa walked toward the back table.

“Give me that.””

I moved in front of her.

“No.””

Her eyes sharpened.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

“You think this makes you important?””

“No.””

I looked at Lily.

“It makes my daughter brave.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Your daughter is eight years old.””

“Yes.””

“And you’re letting her play detective?””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I’m letting her tell the truth.””

For the first time, Vanessa lost control.

“Claire, you have no idea what’s on that drive.””

The room went silent.

Because she had just admitted something.

She knew.

Daniel turned toward her slowly.

“Vanessa.””

She froze.

“Why would you know what’s on it?””

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Then suddenly, the ballroom doors opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Everyone near the entrance turned.

She had red hair.

A black coat.

And a face that looked like she had spent months carrying a secret.

She scanned the room.

Then her eyes landed on Daniel.

“I’m sorry I’m late,” she said.

Vanessa went completely still.

The woman walked forward.

“I came because he deserves to know what happened before he says those vows.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at Vanessa.

Then back at him.

“My name is Rachel.””

She reached into her bag and pulled out a folder.

“And I’m the reason your wedding should never have happened.””

Then she placed the folder on the nearest table.

On the cover was a name.

May you like

A name that made Daniel’s face turn pale.
