Chapter 9: The Child My Father Tried to Save
Nobody moved.
The voice behind the wall echoed through the bedroom.
A child.
Another child.
Not Mia.
Not Lily.
Another little girl was trapped inside our house.
My first instinct was disbelief.
My mind searched for any explanation.
A recording.
A trick.
A memory.
Anything except the impossible.
But then Mia grabbed my hand.
Her fingers were shaking.
“Daddy…”
I looked down at her.
She was staring at the wall.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Afraid.
“You know her?””
Mia slowly nodded.
“She was there.””
The room went silent.
My heart dropped.
“What do you mean?””
Mia looked at the hidden panel.
“She talked to me.””
David stepped forward.
“Who?””
Mia swallowed.
“Anna.””
The name felt strangely familiar.
I looked around the room.
Nobody reacted.
Nobody except my mother.
Her face turned white.
“Anna?””
I stared at her.
“You know that name?””
My mother didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I grabbed the wooden panel.
My uncle immediately moved forward.
“Don’t.””
I turned.
“Why?””
His expression hardened.
“Because you don’t know what’s behind there.””
I laughed bitterly.
“That’s the story of my entire life.””
I pulled.
The panel cracked open.
The hidden room appeared.
The same dark space where I found Mia.
The same place that had destroyed everything I believed.
But this time…
It was empty.
No child.
No movement.
Nothing.
I stepped inside.
The air smelled old.
Dust.
Wood.
Fear.
On the floor was a small blanket.
Next to it was a faded drawing.
I picked it up.
A family.
Four people holding hands.
A father.
A mother.
Two little girls.
I turned it over.
A name was written on the back.
Anna Carter.
My hands went cold.
“Carter?””
Everyone stared.
Michael whispered,
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He stepped closer.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
He looked at the drawing.
“Because Anna died.””
The room froze.
I turned slowly.
“What did you say?””
Michael looked at my mother.
Then Grace.
“You knew.””
Grace covered her mouth.
My mother sat down.
“I thought she was gone.””
I stared.
“Who was Anna?””
Nobody answered.
I raised my voice.
“Who was Anna?””
Michael finally spoke.
“She was your father’s daughter.””
The words hit me.
Another daughter.
Another secret.
Another person erased.
I looked at Mia.
She was standing silently.
Understanding only pieces.
But feeling all of it.
“How many children did my father have?””
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was already too painful.
My mother whispered,
“Three.””
I felt dizzy.
“Three?””
She nodded.
“You.””
She looked at Mia.
“Her.””
Then she looked at the drawing.
“And Anna.””
I closed my eyes.
My father.
The man I thought I knew.
A man with three children.
A man whose children had all been hidden from each other.
“Where is she?””
Michael’s expression changed.
“She was taken.””
“By who?””
Silence.
Then my uncle spoke.
“She wasn’t taken.””
Everyone looked at him.
“She was a casualty.””
The anger inside me exploded.
“What does that mean?””
My uncle looked at the drawing.
“Your father made choices.””
“No.””
I stepped toward him.
“You don’t get to talk about children like they’re numbers.””
His face remained cold.
“Anna was evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
“Of your father’s weakness.””
Michael pushed him.
“Enough.””
My uncle shoved him back.
“You still don’t understand.””
“I understand enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
My uncle pointed at the wall.
“Your father built this place because he knew secrets were dangerous.””
He looked at me.
“He created hiding places because he was always running.””
I stared.
“Running from you?””
His silence answered.
I turned back to the hidden room.
There had been three children.
And my father had built a place to protect them.
But why had Mia been the only one left?
Where was Anna?
A sound came from inside the wall.
Everyone froze.
Again.
A knock.
Then another.
This time, I followed the sound.
I pressed my hand against the wooden surface.
“Anna?””
No answer.
Then a tiny voice whispered.
“Who are you?””
My heart stopped.
“I’m Ryan.””
A pause.
Then:
“Are you Daddy’s son?””
I closed my eyes.
“Yes.””
The little voice became quieter.
“He said you would come.””
I looked back at everyone.
My mother was crying.
“Anna?””
The child whispered.
“Don’t let him hear me.””
I looked around.
“Who?””
The answer came immediately.
“Uncle Thomas.””
The room went completely still.
My eyes moved toward my uncle.
Thomas.
Nobody had said his name before.
But the child knew.
My uncle’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
“You’re lying.””
His voice was cold.
The little girl behind the wall started crying.
I stepped in front of her.
“Stay away.””
My uncle stared at me.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
“Actually, I think I finally do.””
I looked at the room.
“All these years, everyone kept saying they were protecting me.””
I pointed toward the wall.
“But children were hiding.””
My voice shook.
“Children were suffering.””
I looked at my uncle.
“And you were always there.””
He said nothing.
That was worse.
I turned to David.
“Open it.””
He looked confused.
“What?””
“The wall.””
David hesitated.
“Ryan…”
“Open it.””
Michael helped him.
Together, they pulled away the old wooden boards.
Behind them was another small space.
But this one was different.
There were scratches on the inside.
Drawings.
Words carved into the wood.
A child’s handwriting.
I stepped closer.
My flashlight moved across the wall.
One sentence repeated over and over.
*Daddy said Ryan would save us.*
My chest tightened.
Below it were dates.
Years.
The last one was only six months ago.
I froze.
Six months ago.
Someone had been here recently.
I looked at my mother.
“You knew.””
She shook her head quickly.
“No.””
“Someone did.””
I looked around.
Everyone.
Then I noticed something.
A small camera attached near the ceiling.
Someone had been watching this room.
Watching Mia.
Watching us.
I ripped it down.
My uncle’s face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“You know what that is.””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“You know.””
Thomas looked at me.
“You’re asking questions you shouldn’t ask.””
I laughed.
“That’s all anyone says when they’re guilty.””
His jaw tightened.
“Careful.””
“No.””
I held up the camera.
“Not anymore.””
Then the device in my hand made a sound.
A tiny light blinked.
It was still connected.
A speaker crackled.
Everyone froze.
A voice came through.
An adult voice.
A woman.
“Ryan?””
My blood turned cold.
Because I knew that voice.
Claire.
Mia’s mother.
Everyone stared at the speaker.
The voice continued.
“If you’re hearing this, then you found Anna.””
Mia covered her mouth.
“Mommy?””
The recording continued.
“I’m sorry, Ryan.””
A pause.
Then:
“I tried to come back for my daughters.””
My heart stopped.
“My daughters.””
Plural.
Two daughters.
“Your father wanted to tell you everything, but he knew the truth would put you in danger.””
The recording crackled.
Then Claire whispered:
“The person who destroyed our family was not your uncle.””
Everyone froze.
I looked at Thomas.
His face changed.
But Claire’s voice continued.
“It was someone much closer.””
The speaker went silent.
Then one final sentence played.
A sentence that made my entire body go cold.
“Ryan, the person who has been protecting Thomas all these years…”
A pause.
“Is your wife.””
I turned slowly toward Emma.
She was standing near Lily.
Her face had gone completely pale.
And for the first time since this nightmare began…
May you like
Emma didn’t look afraid.
She looked caught.
