Chapter 5: The Mother Who Buried the Truth

“Ryan?””

The voice outside the bedroom door froze me.

My mother’s voice.

A voice I hadn’t heard in years.

A voice I had spent half my life remembering.

But my mother was dead.

She had died three years after my father.

So who was standing on the other side of the door?

Nobody moved.

The room had become a cage.

Mia was hidden behind David.

Lily was holding Emma’s hand.

Michael stood beside the bed, his fists clenched.

Grace looked like she had seen a ghost.

Again, I heard it.

“Ryan, sweetheart?””

The door handle turned.

I looked at Emma.

She looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

That told me everything.

She knew who was outside.

The door opened.

And a woman stepped inside.

For a second, my brain refused to process what I was seeing.

She was older.

Her hair was completely gray.

There were deep lines around her eyes.

But I knew that face.

I knew those eyes.

Because I had looked into them every day of my childhood.

“Mom?””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

The woman stared at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Ryan.””

My knees almost gave out.

“No.””

I stepped backward.

“No, this isn’t possible.””

My mother slowly reached toward me.

I moved away.

She stopped.

The pain on her face was real.

That almost made it worse.

“You’re alive,” I whispered.

She swallowed.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words.

Not an explanation.

Not a denial.

Just an apology.

I looked around the room.

Everyone knew.

Everyone.

“You’re alive.””

My voice shook.

“And everyone knew.””

Emma looked down.

“I didn’t know she was alive.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew enough.””

She flinched.

My mother looked at me.

“Ryan, please.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Please what?””

I pointed around the room.

“Please explain why my dead mother is standing in my bedroom?””

She closed her eyes.

“Because I had to disappear.””

“Disappear?””

My anger exploded.

“You disappeared from me!””

My voice cracked.

“I was twenty-four years old when you died.””

She started crying.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I stepped closer.

“Do you know what it was like losing both my parents?””

Her face twisted with pain.

“I watched.””

The words stopped me.

“What?””

“I watched from a distance.””

The room went silent.

“You watched?””

She nodded.

“I saw you graduate.””

My breathing slowed.

“I saw you marry Emma.””

Emma looked shocked.

My mother continued.

“I saw Lily being born.””

I stared at her.

“You were there?””

“Sometimes.””

My hands curled into fists.

“And you never came to me?””

She looked away.

“I wanted to.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Her answer came quietly.

“Because your father made me promise.””

I froze.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“He knew something would happen if you knew the truth.””

I looked at the letter.

The warning.

The secrets.

The lies.

“My entire life was controlled by a dead man.””

Nobody responded.

Because nobody could deny it.

I turned back to my mother.

“Why did he hide Michael?””

Her eyes moved toward him.

Michael looked away.

“Because your father made mistakes.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I pointed toward Mia.

“His mistake was a little girl growing up inside my wall?””

My mother’s face broke.

“No.””

She looked at Mia.

“That was never supposed to happen.””

Mia stared at her.

“Who are you?””

My mother looked devastated.

She knelt slowly.

“I’m your grandfather’s wife.””

Mia didn’t understand.

But I did.

The woman who had raised me.

The woman I called Mom.

She was not Mia’s grandmother.

She was the person who had helped hide the truth.

I looked at Michael.

“How long have you known she was alive?””

Michael answered quietly.

“Three years.””

I stared.

“And you?””

I looked at Emma.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Six months.””

I felt numb.

Six months.

My wife had known my mother was alive for six months.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Emma whispered,

“Because she begged me not to.””

I turned toward my mother.

“She begged you?””

My mother nodded.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I laughed.

The sound was empty.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the black SUV still waited.

The people who had entered my life like a storm were now surrounding me.

I had spent years believing I had a simple family.

A normal family.

Now I had discovered my family was built on secrets.

“Who are they?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I turned around.

“Who is outside?””

My mother’s expression changed.

“They work for your uncle.””

The name hit me again.

The uncle I never knew existed.

The person my family had erased.

“What does he want?””

My mother looked at Mia.

“The same thing he always wanted.””

“What?””

“Your father’s legacy.””

I frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

She walked closer.

“Your father left everything to you.””

I stared.

“I don’t own anything.””

“Yes, you do.””

“No.””

“Ryan…”

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You’re talking about some company I never knew existed.””

My mother nodded.

“Your father built it before you were born.””

“And why would he leave it to me?””

“Because he wanted to keep it away from your uncle.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Your father knew your uncle would destroy everything.””

I looked at him.

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Michael gave a sad smile.

“Because your father believed knowledge was dangerous.””

I looked at Mia.

“And hiding a child wasn’t?””

Nobody answered.

A sudden loud bang came from downstairs.

Everyone jumped.

The front door.

Someone had forced it open.

My mother immediately moved toward the bedroom door.

“We need to leave.””

I stared.

“What?””

“We don’t have much time.””

Grace grabbed Mia’s hand.

David moved toward Lily.

Emma looked at me.

“Ryan.””

I didn’t move.

“No.””

Everyone stopped.

I looked around the room.

“No more running.””

My mother stared.

“Ryan.””

“No.””

I pointed at the wall.

“At this moment, there are people breaking into my house.””

I pointed at Mia.

“My daughter was hidden from me.””

I pointed at my mother.

“You faked your death.””

I looked at Emma.

“My wife lied to me.””

My voice became quieter.

“I’m done running from things I don’t understand.””

Michael watched me carefully.

“What are you going to do?””

I looked toward the door.

The footsteps were getting closer.

“I’m going to ask questions.””

My mother looked afraid.

“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with.””

“Then explain.””

She hesitated.

And that hesitation told me the truth was worse than anything I had imagined.

“My uncle isn’t just looking for the company.””

I waited.

“He’s looking for Mia.””

“Why?””

My mother looked at the little girl.

“Because she is the only person who can prove what he did.””

The hallway went silent.

The footsteps stopped.

Someone was standing right outside the bedroom.

Then a man’s voice spoke.

Calm.

Confident.

Familiar.

“Ryan.””

Everyone froze.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it every Christmas.

Every family gathering.

Every holiday dinner.

The door slowly opened.

And the man standing there smiled.

“Your father always said you were smarter than him.””

I stared at the person who had just walked into my home.

The man I had trusted my entire life.

My uncle.

The man I thought was my father’s closest friend.

He looked at me.

Then at Mia.

Then smiled.

“But he was wrong.””

He stepped inside.

“You’re exactly like him.””

I felt my blood run cold.

Because behind him stood several strangers.

And in his hand…

Was another photograph.

One showing my father.

May you like

Holding a gun.

And standing over a body.
