Chapter 8: The Person Closest to Me
The message remained on my screen.
Five words.
But they felt heavier than every secret that had been revealed that night.
*Do not trust the person standing closest to you.*
My eyes moved slowly around the room.
Evan was beside me.
His hand was still wrapped around mine.
Helen sat at the table.
Daniel stood near the doorway.
Everyone was watching me.
Everyone looked suspicious.
Everyone looked afraid.
And that was the cruelest part.
Because I didn’t know who was afraid for me.
And who was afraid of me.
“Maya.””
Evan’s voice was soft.
Too soft.
I pulled my hand away.
Not because I thought he was guilty.
Because I didn’t know anything anymore.
The hurt on his face appeared instantly.
“Maya…”
“I need a minute.””
He nodded.
But he didn’t move away.
“I’m here.””
Those words should have comforted me.
Instead, they made my chest ache.
Because being there was not the same as telling the truth.
The baby monitor crackled again.
Noah made a tiny sound.
I immediately walked toward him.
No matter what secrets surrounded him, he was still my son.
My baby.
The one person in this room who had never lied to me.
I lifted him carefully.
His tiny hand wrapped around my finger.
And for a moment, everything became quiet.
The fear.
The anger.
The confusion.
All of it disappeared.
Then I noticed something.
A small mark on his hospital bracelet.
A handwritten number.
I had never paid attention before.
But now, after everything, every detail felt important.
I looked closer.
“Evan.””
He came over.
“What?””
I pointed.
“Did you see this before?””
He looked at the bracelet.
“No.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What is it?””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
Helen suddenly stood.
“Let me see.””
The speed of her reaction made everyone freeze.
Evan looked at her.
“Why?””
Helen stopped.
“I…”
She looked at the bracelet.
Then away.
I felt something inside me tighten.
“You know something.””
“No.””
“Helen.””
She looked exhausted.
“I don’t know what it means.””
“But you reacted.””
She said nothing.
Evan’s expression hardened again.
“Mom.””
Helen sat back down.
“I saw a number like that before.””
“Where?””
“In Claire’s records.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What number?””
Helen whispered it.
A series of digits.
Daniel’s face changed.
“That’s impossible.””
“What is it?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“It was Claire’s medical identification code.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
“That code was created when she was a child.””
I stared at Noah’s bracelet.
“That makes no sense.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“It doesn’t.””
Evan looked at me.
“Someone put it there.””
The room went silent.
Someone.
Again.
That word.
Always someone.
Never an answer.
I picked up my phone.
The message from Dr. Lane was still there.
I typed a response.
*Who do you mean?*
The message delivered.
No reply.
I waited.
Thirty seconds.
A minute.
Nothing.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“I need to take this.””
Evan watched him.
“Who is it?””
Daniel hesitated.
“My lawyer.””
“Why would your lawyer call you now?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Evan stepped forward.
“Put it on speaker.””
Daniel stared at him.
“This is private.””
“So was my son’s medical file.””
Daniel looked down.
Then answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
“Daniel, you need to come back immediately.””
“Why?””
“The documents were found.””
Daniel froze.
“What documents?””
“The original custody petition.””
My stomach dropped.
Evan looked at me.
Daniel went pale.
“Where?””
A pause.
Then the lawyer answered.
“At the Carter house.””
Everyone stopped breathing.
Evan looked toward Helen.
“No.””
Daniel whispered:
“How?””
The lawyer continued.
“They were hidden in the old nursery.””
Helen’s face went white.
The old nursery.
A place in her house.
A place connected to Evan’s childhood.
A place where she had kept things hidden.
Evan slowly turned toward his mother.
“Mom.””
Helen looked away.
“I can explain.””
The words were automatic.
The same words everyone used before revealing something terrible.
“No.””
Evan shook his head.
“Not anymore.””
He walked toward her.
“What did you hide?””
Helen started crying.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing everything.””
Evan laughed bitterly.
“You already lost me.””
The pain on Helen’s face was immediate.
But this time, I didn’t look away.
Because I had spent too long protecting everyone else’s feelings.
“What was in the petition?”” I asked.
Daniel answered.
His voice was quiet.
“It was a request for emergency custody.””
My heart stopped.
“Of Noah?””
Daniel nodded.
“Filed before his birth.””
Evan looked at him.
“By your family?””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then said:
“Because they believed Noah was the last living connection to Claire.””
I looked at my son.
A baby.
A person.
Not a connection.
Not a symbol.
Not a second chance.
A person.
Evan’s phone suddenly rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
“Maya…”
“What?””
“It’s the hospital.””
Every person in the room went still.
He answered.
“Hello?””
He listened.
Then his expression became confused.
“What?””
A pause.
“No, I’m his father.””
Another pause.
Then:
“Why would you say that?””
I watched his face lose color.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
Then at Noah.
The call continued.
“What do you mean there is another birth record?””
My breath stopped.
Another birth record.
No.
Not again.
Evan stood frozen.
“Where?””
He listened.
“Okay.””
He ended the call.
Nobody spoke.
“What did they say?””
His eyes were full of fear.
“The hospital found the original file.””
I swallowed.
“And?””
He looked at Noah.
Then at me.
“The original file has a different mother listed.””
My entire body went cold.
“What?””
Evan shook his head.
“No.””
He looked like he was trying to deny his own words.
“The hospital said it’s impossible.””
“Then why are you saying it?””
He looked at the paper on the table.
The documents.
The letters.
The secrets.
Then he whispered:
“Because the name on the original birth record…”
He stopped.
I couldn’t breathe.
“Whose name?””
Evan looked at me.
And I knew from his face that whatever came next would change everything.
“The original mother listed on Noah’s first record…”
May you like
His voice broke.
“…was Claire Carter Whitmore.””
