Chapter 9: The Man Who Buried the Truth
The sound of Salvatore's hand touching his weapon was louder than any scream.
Everyone froze.
My father stood in the doorway.
Alive.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakably him.
And the man who had spent the entire night standing beside me, protecting me, guiding me, and claiming loyalty was now reaching for a gun.
For years, I had believed Salvatore was the closest thing I had to a father after Angelo disappeared.
I believed he was the man who helped me survive.
The man who taught me how to lead.
The man who stayed when everyone else left.
Now I didn't know if he had been saving me.
Or controlling me.
"Salvatore.""
My father's voice was quiet.
But everyone heard the warning.
The old man stopped.
His fingers remained near the weapon.
"I thought you were dead.""
Angelo smiled sadly.
"That was the point.""
The room became silent.
I looked between them.
"You two knew.""
Neither answered.
My anger rose.
"You both knew.""
Salvatore looked at me.
"Roman—"
"No.""
I stepped forward.
"Not another excuse.""
My voice shook.
"I spent twelve years believing my father was gone.""
I pointed toward Angelo.
"I spent years grieving him.""
Then toward Salvatore.
"I spent years trusting you.""
My throat tightened.
"And both of you let me.""
Nobody spoke.
Even Clara was quiet.
She sat beside Katherine, watching the adults argue with the confusion of a child who only understood that the people she loved were hurting each other.
Angelo looked at her.
His expression softened.
"Clara.""
My daughter looked up.
She didn't know him.
But something about his voice made her listen.
He slowly lowered himself to one knee.
"I know you don't know me.""
Clara held her rabbit tighter.
"Are you Daddy's daddy?""
The question hit the entire room.
Angelo closed his eyes briefly.
Then nodded.
"Yes.""
She looked at me.
Then back at him.
"Are you a bad man?""
Nobody breathed.
Because a child had asked the question everyone else was afraid to ask.
Angelo looked at her.
"No.""
His voice cracked.
"But I made bad choices.""
Clara studied him.
Then whispered:
"Mommy made bad choices too.""
Katherine looked down.
Angelo looked at me.
"She told you.""
I nodded.
"She told me enough.""
"No.""
His expression became serious.
"She told you what she needed you to know.""
The words bothered me.
Because everyone had been doing that.
Giving me pieces.
Never the whole truth.
"Then give me the whole thing.""
Angelo stood.
And for the first time since entering the room, he looked less like a powerful man and more like a tired father.
"Six years before Clara was born, I discovered someone inside our family was stealing from us.""
My eyes moved toward Salvatore.
He remained silent.
"I thought it was business.""
Angelo continued.
"I thought someone wanted money.""
He looked at me.
"I was wrong.""
"Why?""
"Because they didn't want money.""
He paused.
"They wanted control.""
The room was still.
"Salvatore wasn't stealing.""
My uncle looked away.
"He was building something.""
I looked at Salvatore.
"What?""
Angelo's voice became colder.
"An empire inside my empire.""
Salvatore finally spoke.
"You disappeared because you were afraid.""
Angelo looked at him.
"I disappeared because you tried to kill me.""
The accusation landed like a gunshot.
Nobody moved.
I looked at Salvatore.
He didn't deny it.
That was the worst part.
"Tell me he's lying.""
Salvatore looked at me.
For years, he had always had an answer.
This time, he didn't.
"Roman.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
My voice broke.
"Tell me.""
Silence.
Then Salvatore said:
"I did what I had to do.""
My chest tightened.
The words were almost worse than a confession.
"Why?""
His expression changed.
Anger.
Regret.
Something I couldn't identify.
"Because your father was going to destroy everything.""
Angelo laughed quietly.
"There it is.""
Salvatore looked at him.
"You don't know what I know.""
"I know exactly what you know.""
Angelo stepped closer.
"You knew about Clara.""
Salvatore's face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
I noticed.
"You knew?""
He didn't answer.
I stepped forward.
"Did you know?""
Finally, he said:
"Yes.""
The room felt colder.
"How?""
Salvatore looked at Clara.
"Because I was there the night she was born.""
Katherine covered her mouth.
I stared.
"You were there?""
He nodded.
"I saw Angelo leave.""
My heart pounded.
"Leave where?""
"To protect her.""
I looked at Angelo.
"What does that mean?""
My father looked away.
"I learned someone wanted Clara gone.""
My stomach dropped.
"Why?""
"Because she was proof.""
"Proof of what?""
Angelo looked at Salvatore.
"That he wasn't the rightful heir.""
The sentence confused me.
Then slowly...
I understood.
The family.
The company.
The inheritance.
The power.
Clara's existence threatened someone.
Not because she was a child.
Because she represented a future they couldn't control.
Salvatore spoke quietly.
"Angelo was supposed to die that night.""
I looked at him.
"But he didn't.""
"No.""
Salvatore's eyes moved to my father.
"Because I changed my mind.""
Everyone went still.
Angelo looked surprised.
"You?""
Salvatore nodded.
"I couldn't do it.""
The room became silent.
"Then why continue?""
Salvatore closed his eyes.
"Because by the time I realized what was happening, it was too late.""
I stared.
"You poisoned my wine.""
His eyes moved to me.
"No.""
The answer came immediately.
Too immediately.
Angelo stepped forward.
"He's telling the truth.""
I looked at my father.
"What?""
"The wine was not Salvatore's plan.""
Angelo looked toward the hallway.
"Someone else used his access.""
My eyes narrowed.
"Who?""
Nobody spoke.
Then Katherine whispered:
"Marcus.""
Everyone turned.
Marcus stood near the doorway.
His face changed.
"No.""
Katherine looked at him.
"You told me you were trying to help.""
"I was.""
"You lied.""
Marcus looked at me.
"Roman, listen.""
I was tired of listening.
"Why did you attack me at the table?""
His face tightened.
"Because I thought Clara was about to reveal something that would get her killed.""
The answer stunned me.
"You attacked me to protect her?""
He nodded.
"I knew someone was watching.""
"Who?""
Marcus looked toward Salvatore.
Then Angelo.
Then me.
"I didn't know.""
His voice broke.
"I only knew the plan was bigger than Katherine.""
A sudden sound interrupted him.
A phone buzzing.
Everyone looked.
It was Salvatore's.
He checked the screen.
His face changed.
"What?""
I watched him.
"Who is it?""
He didn't answer.
Angelo walked closer.
"Show him.""
Salvatore slowly turned the phone around.
A message.
From an unknown number.
One sentence.
*You failed to kill Roman. Finish what Angelo started.*
Nobody moved.
I looked at my father.
"What does that mean?""
Angelo stared at the message.
And for the first time since he entered the house...
He looked afraid.
"Roman.""
I waited.
"Your father was not the person who started this.""
The room went silent.
"Then who?""
Angelo looked toward the ceiling.
Toward the rooms above us.
Toward my daughter.
Then he said:
"The person who has been protecting Clara all night...""
A pause.
"The person who knew exactly where she was...""
His eyes moved to Katherine.
"No.""
Katherine whispered.
Angelo finished:
"The person who helped create this entire plan...""
Everyone turned.
Because behind us, standing at the entrance of the living room, was someone nobody had noticed.
Someone who had been in the house the entire time.
Someone Clara trusted.
And someone holding a knife.
The person smiled.
"Roman.""
My blood went cold.
Because I knew that voice.
It was the voice that had read Clara bedtime stories.
The voice that had brought her presents.
The voice that had kissed her forehead.
The voice of someone I never suspected.
"My mistake was thinking you would die before you learned the truth.""
May you like
The person stepped into the light.
And the final secret of my family was finally revealed.
