Amused

Chapter 7: The Child They Tried to Erase

I had heard my daughter cry hundreds of times.

A scraped knee.

A nightmare.

A lost toy.

A bad dream that felt real to a three-year-old.

But this scream was different.

This was not the sound of a child asking for comfort.

This was the sound of a child who had realized the person standing near her was dangerous.

I ran.

I didn't think.

I didn't listen.

I didn't care who followed.

The staircase blurred beneath my feet as I moved upward.

Behind me, I heard Salvatore shouting orders.

"Lock the house down!""

Guards rushed through the halls.

Marcus yelled something I couldn't understand.

Katherine followed.

"Roman, wait!""

I didn't turn around.

Not this time.

Nothing mattered except Clara.

When I reached her room, the door was open.

The small lamp beside her bed was knocked over.

The Christmas lights around the window were still glowing.

But Clara wasn't in her bed.

For one terrible second, I couldn't breathe.

Then I saw her.

She was hiding behind the chair in the corner.

Her little body was shaking.

And standing near the window was a man I had never seen before.

He was dressed in black.

Older.

Calm.

Too calm.

My guards entered behind me, weapons raised.

The stranger lifted his hands.

"Nobody needs to panic.""

I stared at him.

Nobody needs to panic.

A stranger standing in my daughter's bedroom on Christmas night.

Those were the words he chose.

"Who are you?""

The man looked at Clara.

Not at me.

That made my anger turn into something colder.

"Roman.""

Salvatore entered behind me.

The moment he saw the man, his face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"You.""

The stranger smiled slightly.

"Hello, Salvatore.""

The room became silent.

I looked between them.

"You know him.""

Salvatore didn't answer.

That was enough.

I stepped closer.

"Who is he?""

The man finally looked at me.

"My name is Vincent.""

I waited.

Nothing.

The name meant nothing.

But Salvatore reacted.

And that meant everything.

"Roman," Salvatore said quietly.

"Do not trust him.""

Vincent smiled.

"Funny.""

He looked at Salvatore.

"That is exactly what you told Angelo.""

My father's name.

Again.

Everything came back to my father.

The dead man who wasn't dead.

The secrets.

The lies.

The people who knew more than they admitted.

I moved toward Clara.

She immediately reached for me.

"Daddy.""

I picked her up.

She buried her face against my neck.

"You're okay.""

She nodded.

But she was still trembling.

I looked at Vincent.

"What did you want?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Katherine.

Because she had followed us into the room.

"You told him.""

Katherine stopped.

Her face went pale.

I turned toward her.

"Told me what?""

Nobody answered.

I looked at Vincent.

"Talk.""

He sighed.

"Your family has spent years hiding the truth from you.""

I almost laughed.

"Tonight has been full of people saying that.""

Vincent looked at Clara.

"But your daughter was the one who discovered it first.""

My grip tightened.

"What does that mean?""

He stepped closer.

The guards immediately raised their weapons.

He stopped.

"Clara hears everything.""

My eyes narrowed.

"She's three.""

"Exactly.""

Vincent's expression changed.

"Adults underestimate children. They think because they don't understand every word, they understand nothing.""

My daughter stayed silent.

But she was listening.

Always listening.

"What truth did she discover?""

Vincent looked at Katherine.

"Ask your wife why she was meeting me.""

Katherine shook her head.

"No.""

The answer came too quickly.

Too desperately.

I looked at her.

"You know him.""

She swallowed.

"Yes.""

The room changed.

Again.

Every secret seemed to have another secret underneath.

"When?""

Katherine looked down.

"Six months ago.""

Marcus whispered:

"The same time everything started.""

I turned toward him.

"You knew?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

But his face said something else.

Maybe not the details.

But enough.

I looked back at Katherine.

"Why did you meet him?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because he came to me.""

"Why?""

"Because he said he knew what you were planning.""

I frowned.

"What I was planning?""

She nodded.

"Your divorce.""

The word hung in the air.

Vincent smiled.

"She was scared.""

Katherine looked at him.

"Don't.""

But he continued.

"She thought Roman would take Clara, destroy her reputation, and leave her with nothing.""

I stared at Katherine.

"And you believed him?""

She shook her head.

"At first, no.""

"At first?""

Her face crumbled.

"Then he showed me things.""

"What things?""

She looked toward Clara.

"Things about your father.""

My heart stopped.

"What things?""

Before she could answer, the lights went out again.

This time, nobody moved.

Because everyone knew.

This wasn't an accident.

Emergency lights turned on seconds later.

But Vincent was gone.

The window beside him was open.

Snow blew into the room.

I rushed forward.

Nothing.

No footprints.

No sound.

Just cold air.

Salvatore cursed under his breath.

"He planned this.""

I turned around.

"Who is he?""

Salvatore looked at me.

"Someone your father trusted.""

The words made me freeze.

"My father trusted him?""

"Yes.""

"And you know why he's here?""

Salvatore looked away.

That was all the answer I needed.

I stepped closer.

"You knew.""

"No.""

"You knew something.""

He didn't deny it.

My anger rose.

"Everyone in this house knew pieces of my life except me.""

"Roman—"

"No.""

I looked around the room.

"My wife knew.""

I looked at Marcus.

"My cousin knew.""

I looked at Salvatore.

"My uncle knew.""

Then I looked at Clara.

"And my daughter was the only honest person here.""

Nobody spoke.

Because it was true.

I carried Clara downstairs.

She refused to let go of me.

When we reached the living room, Katherine followed.

"Roman.""

I stopped.

"What?""

She looked exhausted.

"I need to tell you everything.""

I turned.

"Then start with the truth.""

She nodded slowly.

"I didn't poison you.""

Nobody moved.

"Not tonight.""

The words were carefully chosen.

Not tonight.

I noticed.

"Then what did you do?""

She looked down.

"I helped create the opportunity.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Katherine.""

She looked at him.

"I'm done protecting you.""

That sentence shocked me.

"You were protecting him?""

She nodded.

"At first.""

"Why?""

Her voice broke.

"Because he promised me he could fix everything.""

"Who?""

She looked toward the phone still in my hand.

Toward the name that had appeared.

Toward my dead father.

Then she whispered:

"Your father.""

The room went silent.

My hands tightened.

"My father was involved?""

Katherine nodded.

"He contacted me months ago.""

Nobody moved.

"Angelo DeLuca told me he was alive.""

My father's voice echoed in my memory.

You trusted blood too easily.

I stared at her.

"Why would he contact you?""

She looked at Clara.

And what she said next changed the entire meaning of the night.

"Because he believed Clara was the key.""

I frowned.

"To what?""

Katherine's eyes filled with fear.

"To exposing the person who actually tried to destroy your family.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Who?""

She opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Because from the hallway came a voice.

A voice that answered for her.

"Me.""

Everyone turned.

Marcus stood there.

But he wasn't alone.

He was holding a folder.

And on top of it was a photograph.

A photograph of him.

With my father.

Taken thirteen years ago.

The day before Angelo DeLuca supposedly died.

Marcus looked at me.

"I didn't plan to kill you.""

His voice shook.

"I planned to make sure you found the truth.""

He placed the folder on the table.

"But I was too late.""

I stared at him.

"Too late for what?""

Marcus looked at Clara.

Then at me.

"Because the person who started this was never Katherine.""

He opened the folder.

Inside was one final document.

A birth certificate.

My daughter's.

But the name written under *father* was not mine.

My world stopped.

May you like

And Marcus whispered:

"Roman... Clara isn't your daughter.""
