Chapter 9: The Fall Of Daniel Brooks
By sunrise, my name was everywhere.
News channels.
Social media.
Business websites.
Everyone had an opinion.
Some called me a liar.
Some called me a monster.
Some demanded my resignation.
The internet had already decided my story before hearing the truth.
That was Richard's talent.
He didn't need to destroy someone.
He only needed to make the world doubt them.
When I entered the Brooks Hospitality headquarters, employees stopped talking.
The same people who once smiled now looked away.
The boardroom doors opened.
Victor stood at the front.
"Daniel.""
I looked at him.
"You betrayed me.""
He sighed.
"This isn't personal.""
"Everything is personal.""
I placed the flash drive on the table.
"This proves Richard's crimes.""
Victor looked nervous.
For one second, I thought I had him.
Then he smiled.
"You should have brought that earlier.""
My expression changed.
"What?""
The door opened.
Richard entered.
Holding a copy of the same flash drive.
"I believe this belongs to me.""
My blood went cold.
"You copied it.""
Richard smiled.
"I planned for Thomas.""
Thomas looked furious.
"You knew?""
Richard laughed.
"I knew everything.""
He looked at the board.
"Daniel Brooks built this company.""
He paused.
"But I built the system.""
The board members exchanged looks.
Richard continued.
"Daniel believes leadership is about kindness.""
He smiled.
"I believe leadership is about control.""
Then he turned toward me.
"And today, the board agrees.""
Victor placed papers on the table.
"The vote is complete.""
I looked at the document.
Chairman removal.
Effective immediately.
For the first time in fifteen years...
I had no authority.
No title.
No company.
But I had something Richard didn't understand.
The truth.
I stood.
"You think you won.""
Richard smiled.
"I know I won.""
I walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
"Richard.""
He looked at me.
"You made one mistake.""
"What?""
"You thought my company was my legacy.""
I looked back.
"It isn't.""
I left.
Outside the building, reporters surrounded me.
Questions everywhere.
"Mr. Brooks, did you abandon your daughter?""
"Are you stepping down permanently?""
"Did Richard Vale expose the truth?""
I said nothing.
Because for once, I didn't need to defend myself.
Not yet.
That night, I sat with Lily in the hotel room.
The same hotel where this nightmare began.
She looked at me.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Are we poor now?""
The question broke me.
I smiled sadly.
"No, sweetheart.""
"Are you sure?""
I nodded.
"Because money isn't what makes us rich.""
She thought about it.
"Then what does?""
I held her hand.
"People who stay.""
A knock came at the door.
I stood.
Security had been removed.
The hotel no longer belonged to me.
But when I opened it...
Claire was standing there.
She held a folder.
"I found something.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
She handed it to me.
"Before Richard took control, he made one mistake.""
I opened the folder.
Inside were employee records.
Financial documents.
Private messages.
Everything.
My eyes widened.
"Where did you get this?""
Claire swallowed.
"Richard thought nobody would notice me.""
She looked down.
"But people like me learn how to survive by watching powerful people.""
I turned the pages.
Then I saw it.
A transaction.
A payment.
A signature.
Richard had paid someone inside my company.
Someone close to me.
Someone who helped him from the beginning.
I looked at the name.
And my heart sank.
Because the person who betrayed me wasn't Victor.
It wasn't Emily.
It wasn't even Thomas.
It was someone I trusted more than anyone.
Someone who had stood beside me for fifteen years.

The signature belonged to:
Marcus Hale.
