Chapter 2: The Secret Behind The Storm
Fifteen years earlier, nobody knew my name.
I wasn't a chairman.
I wasn't a billionaire.
I was just a young man with a notebook full of impossible ideas.
I built Brooks Hospitality from nothing.
Long nights.
Empty bank accounts.
Hundreds of failures.
But I never forgot one thing.
A hotel wasn't built with marble.
It was built with people.
Every guest who walked through those doors deserved respect.
That was why seeing Claire's behavior hurt more than the insult itself.
Not because she humiliated me.
Because she humiliated someone else every day.
Someone without my name.
Someone without power.
Someone who couldn't defend themselves.
Marcus led me away from the lobby.
"Sir, I cannot apologize enough.""
I looked back at Claire.
She stood frozen behind the desk.
"How long has she worked here?""
Marcus hesitated.
"Almost three years.""
"Three years?""
I looked at him.
"And nobody noticed this?""
His silence answered for him.
Lily woke up slowly.
"Daddy?""
I smiled.
"Hey, sleepyhead.""
She looked around.
"Are we at home?""
I kissed her forehead.
"Almost.""
Marcus watched us carefully.
"Sir... may I ask why you came without telling anyone?""
That was a fair question.
The chairman of a hotel chain usually didn't arrive soaked and carrying a backpack.
I looked through the glass doors at the rain.
"Because I wanted to see what my company looked like when nobody knew who I was.""
Marcus lowered his eyes.
A few months earlier, I had started receiving reports about declining customer satisfaction.
Complaints about staff attitude.
Complaints about wealthy guests receiving better treatment than ordinary families.
The executives always gave me the same answer.
"Online complaints are exaggerated.""
"Employees are under pressure.""
"The hotel remains successful.""
So I decided to test it myself.
No assistants.
No security.
No expensive suit.
Just Daniel Brooks.
A father carrying his daughter through a storm.
Marcus sighed.
"I wish you had told me.""
"I wish I didn't have to.""
He looked ashamed.
I entered the private elevator with Lily.
But before the doors closed, I saw Claire still standing there.
She wasn't angry anymore.
She looked terrified.
The next morning, I called a meeting.
Every senior manager attended.
The conference room was silent.
I placed a printed document on the table.
"How many complaints about disrespectful treatment have been ignored?""
Nobody answered.
The operations director looked uncomfortable.
"Mr. Brooks, these situations are complicated.""
I looked at him.
"Complicated?""
I opened the folder.
Inside were dozens of customer complaints.
A grandmother mocked for wearing old clothes.
A family questioned because they booked a cheaper room.
A businessman welcomed because of his watch before anyone checked his reservation.
I tapped the pages.
"This is not complicated.""
Nobody spoke.
"This is culture.""
Marcus looked down.
"We failed you.""
I shook my head.
"You failed them.""
That afternoon, I walked back into the lobby.
Claire was waiting.
She looked different.
Smaller.
"Mr. Brooks...""
I stopped.
She looked at Lily.
"I am sorry.""
Lily hid behind my jacket.
Claire swallowed.
"I was wrong.""
I studied her face.
An apology was easy after consequences arrived.
But before I could answer, the front doors opened.
A man in a dark suit rushed inside.
He looked nervous.
"Mr. Brooks.""
I turned.
"Who are you?""
He handed me an envelope.
"My name is Ethan Cole. I work with the legal department.""
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
My hands went still.
Because the picture showed someone I thought I would never see again.
My former business partner.
The man who disappeared ten years ago.
The man who betrayed me.
May you like
And beneath the photograph were five words:
*He knows about your daughter.*
