Amused

Chapter 10: The Truth My Daughter Deserved

I found Livia's silver butterfly clip on the floor beneath the broken window.

For one terrible second, I couldn't move.

Then I heard Marco shouting into his radio, and the world snapped back into focus.

“Lock down the property! Nobody leaves!””

Rosalie stumbled into the hallway behind me.

“Where is she?””

I couldn't answer.

I picked up the butterfly clip with shaking hands.

There was a smear of blood on the windowsill, but no sign of a struggle beyond the broken glass and a blanket dragged across the floor.

I called Livia's name.

Once.

Twice.

Then again, louder.

Nothing.

The police arrived within minutes. Marco organized a search of the grounds while officers examined the window and checked the security footage.

I stood beside the staircase, gripping my phone so tightly my fingers hurt.

The unknown number called again.

I answered immediately.

“Where is my daughter?””

Thomas's voice came through the speaker.

“She's alive.””

“Where is she?””

“Listen to me, Alessandro. You need to stop the police from searching the property.””

“Are you insane? Someone took my six-year-old daughter!””

“I know who took her.””

“Then tell me!””

“Adrian Bellini.””

My blood turned to ice.

“Why would Adrian take Livia?””

“Because he believes she is the only person who can lead him to the original hospital records.””

“She's a child!””

“To him, she's evidence.””

I closed my eyes.

“Thomas, if you hurt her—”

“I would never hurt Livia. I promised Isabella I would protect her.””

“Then help me find her.””

“I will. But you have to trust me.””

I almost laughed.

“Trust you? I've spent my entire life believing you were dead.””

“I know.””

“You let me mourn you!””

“I didn't have a choice.””

“Everyone has a choice!””

Thomas's voice broke.

“Not when the people threatening your family are powerful enough to make a death look real.””

I looked at the butterfly clip.

“Tell me where she is.””

“There's an abandoned estate outside the city. The Bellinis used it for private meetings years ago. I'll send you the location.””

“I'm bringing the police.””

“Bring them. But don't let Adrian know you're coming.””

The call ended.

A message arrived seconds later with an address.

I handed it to Marco.

“Find the location. Get the police there immediately.””

Rosalie caught my arm.

“Alessandro, please. What did he say?””

“Adrian has Livia.””

She made a broken sound and covered her mouth.

I took her hands.

“I'm bringing her home.””

“What if—”

“No.”” My voice cracked.

“Don't finish that sentence.””

I kissed her forehead and turned toward the door.

As I ran outside, I called Samuel.

“Contact every authority you can. Tell them a child has been abducted. We have a suspect, a location, and a possible connection to the Bellini family.””

“I'm on it.””

“Samuel, I need the original hospital records. Every page. Every amendment. Every signature.””

“I'll get them.””

“And find out who my brother was.””

There was a long silence.

Then Samuel said, “Alessandro, I think I already know.””

I stopped beside the car.

“What?””

“Your father had another son. His name was Luca Moretti. He was born twelve years before you.””

I stared into the darkness.

“I don't have a brother named Luca.””

“You were told he died in infancy. But the records are inconsistent. There is no confirmed death certificate, and the hospital file was sealed after a court order was issued.””

My hands began to shake.

“Who issued the order?””

“Your father.””

I climbed into the car.

“Get me everything.””

We reached the abandoned estate shortly after midnight.

Police vehicles lined the road, their headlights cutting through the rain. Officers had established a perimeter around the property, and armed units were moving toward the main building.

I stepped out before the car stopped completely.

Marco grabbed my shoulder.

“Sir, wait for the tactical team.””

“My daughter is inside.””

“We don't know that.””

“I do.””

I ran toward the entrance.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, the house smelled of damp wood and old smoke. A single lamp burned in the drawing room.

Adrian Bellini stood beside the fireplace.

Livia was sitting on a sofa behind him, wrapped in a blanket. Her eyes were swollen from crying, but she was unharmed.

When she saw me, she jumped up.

“Daddy!””

I crossed the room and pulled her into my arms.

She clung to my neck.

“I was scared.””

“I know, baby. I'm here.””

“I told him I didn't know anything.””

“You don't have to tell anyone anything.””

She buried her face against my shoulder.

Behind us, Adrian raised his hands as officers entered the room.

“I didn't intend to hurt her,” he said.

I turned toward him.

“You took my daughter.””

“I needed to know where Isabella hid the original records.””

“You kidnapped a six-year-old girl to get documents?””

“She was never in danger.””

I stared at him.

“Look at her.””

Livia was shaking against my chest.

“Look at what you've done.””

For the first time, Adrian seemed unable to answer.

The officers took him into custody.

I carried Livia outside, where paramedics checked her for injuries. She had a small cut on one finger and a bruise on her knee, but nothing more serious.

I held her hand while they cleaned the wound.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Is he going to take me away again?””

“No.””

I pressed her hand against my cheek.

“No one is taking you away from me.””

She nodded, but she didn't let go of my sleeve.

As the police prepared to transport Adrian, Thomas emerged from the shadows near the side entrance.

He was older than the man I'd imagined from childhood memories. His hair was almost entirely gray, his face lined, and his shoulders bent beneath a dark coat.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

My father's eyes.

Or the eyes of the man I'd once believed was my father.

Thomas stopped several feet away.

“Alessandro.””

I stared at him.

“You're alive.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe you were dead.””

He lowered his head.

“I know.””

“Why?””

“Because your father told me that if I ever returned, the Bellinis would destroy the family.””

I looked at Livia.

“And you thought disappearing for thirty years was the best way to protect us?””

“No. I thought it was the only way.””

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to demand every answer he had withheld.

Instead, I asked the only question that mattered.

“Who is Luca?””

Thomas's face crumpled.

“My son.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“Your son?””

He nodded.

“Luca was born before you. He was taken to St. Catherine's after a medical emergency.

Your father believed he had died. But I found evidence that the hospital had transferred him to another facility.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your father forbade me from speaking about it. He said Luca's disappearance was connected to the Bellini family's financial arrangements. He threatened to have me arrested if I pursued it.””

“And Isabella?””

Thomas looked toward the police vehicles.

“She discovered the truth years later. She was trying to find Luca when she became ill.””

I stared at him.

“Was Luca alive when she died?””

Thomas hesitated.

“I don't know.””

“Then how can you say he's connected to Livia?””

“Because Isabella believed the original hospital records contained evidence of two separate incidents. One involving the newborn identification error. The other involving Luca's disappearance.””

I closed my eyes.

Everything had been connected.

The ring. The altered trust documents. The sealed hospital records. The threats.

But I still didn't understand why Bianca had been involved.

Thomas seemed to read my thoughts.

“Bianca was working with Adrian because she believed the Bellinis would give her control of the trust. They promised her money, influence, and a position in their company.””

“And what did Adrian want?””

“The original records. He believed they proved his father had arranged the transfer of a child years ago. He wanted to destroy them before the truth became public.””

“Which child?””

Thomas looked at Livia.

“I believe it was Luca.””

I held my daughter closer.

The police led Adrian toward a waiting vehicle.

He stopped before entering and looked back at me.

“You still don't understand,” he said.

“Isabella knew what happened. She knew the Bellinis had nothing to do with Livia's birth.””

I stared at him.

“Then why did she hide the records?””

“Because she knew who had arranged the original transfer.””

“Who?””

Adrian smiled bitterly.

“Your father.””

I felt as if someone had struck me.

Thomas stepped forward.

“That's a lie.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Is it? Your brother arranged the original transfer. He paid Dr.

Lang. He used the hospital's confusion to conceal Luca's identity.””

Thomas's face went white.

“No.””

“Your brother wanted to protect the family name. He believed Luca's existence would expose a secret that could destroy the Moretti fortune.””

I shook my head.

“My father was dead.””

Adrian gave a short, humorless laugh.

“Your father died eight years ago. But the man who arranged the transfer was alive when it happened.””

I stared at Thomas.

“What is he talking about?””

Thomas looked away.

And in that moment, I understood.

The man in the photograph had not been my father.

It had been Thomas.

He had used my father's identity to enter the hospital.

He had helped Isabella investigate the records.

And he had concealed the truth from me because he believed he was protecting us.

“Tell me the truth,” I said.

Thomas's eyes filled with tears.

“I am not your father's brother.””

I felt Livia's fingers tighten around mine.

Thomas continued.

“I was your father's son. His firstborn. He raised me as his brother after he adopted you into the family.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Your father and mother adopted you when you were an infant. Your biological parents were never listed on the public records because they had been involved in the original Bellini agreement.””

I couldn't breathe.

“My parents were my parents.””

“Yes,” Thomas whispered.

“They loved you. They raised you. They were your parents in every way that mattered.””

I looked down at Livia.

The words Isabella had written returned to me.

Livia is your daughter in every way that matters.

I suddenly understood why she'd chosen those words.

Not because she was uncertain whether I loved my daughter.

Because she knew the truth about my own birth.

Thomas stepped closer.

“The original records show that your biological mother was Elena Voss. Your biological father was never identified. The Bellinis arranged your adoption through a private agreement, and your parents raised you without knowing the full details.””

I stared at him.

“And Luca?””

Thomas's voice broke.

“Luca was my biological son. He was the child whose identity was altered at St. Catherine's. Isabella discovered that he had been transferred to a private facility under another name.””

“Is he alive?””

Thomas shook his head.

“We don't know. But the original records may finally tell us.””

I looked toward the police vehicle carrying Adrian away.

For two years, Isabella had tried to protect our daughter from a secret that had begun before either of us was born.

Bianca had exploited that secret.

The Bellinis had tried to bury it.

And Thomas had hidden himself in the shadows, believing his disappearance could keep the truth from reaching us.

I looked at Livia.

She was watching me with tired, frightened eyes.

“Daddy?””

I knelt in front of her.

“Yes, baby?””

“Are you still my daddy?””

The question broke whatever remained of my composure.

I took her face in my hands.

“Always.””

“Even if the papers say something different?””

“Even if every paper in the world says something different.””

She started crying.

I pulled her into my arms.

“You are my daughter, Livia. You were my daughter the first moment I held you, and you'll be my daughter until my last breath. Nobody can change that.””

She clung to me.

“Then I don't care about the papers.””

I kissed the top of her head.

“Neither do I.””

Three weeks later, the original hospital records were recovered from Dr. Lang's storage unit.

They confirmed that Livia's identification had been verified before she left the hospital. The suspected discrepancy involved another newborn, a boy who had been transferred under an incorrect name during the emergency.

The investigation also uncovered evidence that the Bellini family had paid several hospital employees to conceal the circumstances of Luca's transfer.

Adrian was charged in connection with the attempted financial fraud, the forged guardianship documents, and Livia's abduction. Bianca faced separate charges related to the trust transfer and the falsified paperwork. The evidence from the bridal suite, the airfield, and the abandoned estate became part of the case against them.

The court froze the disputed accounts and restored the protections around Livia's inheritance.

Samuel helped us establish an independent legal review of the Moretti family records.

And Thomas, for the first time in decades, stopped running.

He gave a full statement to the investigators and agreed to help locate Luca.

We never learned whether Luca was still alive.

But we learned enough to understand why Isabella had spent her final months gathering documents, preserving letters, and trying to protect our daughter from people who believed family was something that could be owned.

On the anniversary of Isabella's death, Livia and I visited her grave.

Her hair had begun to grow back. The new curls were shorter and softer, but they caught the sunlight in the same golden-brown ribbons I remembered.

She placed a white rose beside her mother's name.

Then she looked at me.

“Daddy, do you think Mommy knew everything would be okay?””

I crouched beside her.

“I think she hoped we'd be strong enough to find the truth.””

Livia touched the silver butterfly clip in her hair.

“I wish she could see me now.””

I wrapped my arm around her shoulders.

“She can see the little girl she loved. The brave girl who told the truth even when she was scared.””

Livia smiled faintly.

“Do you think she would be proud of us?””

I looked at Isabella's name carved into the stone.

“Yes, sweetheart. I think she'd be very proud.””

As we walked back toward the car, my phone vibrated.

Samuel had sent a message.

*We've received a new lead on Luca. A witness claims he was seen alive six months ago.*

I stopped walking.

Livia looked up at me.

“What is it, Daddy?””

I stared at the message.

For years, I'd believed my family was built on simple truths: the people who raised you were your parents, the people you loved were your family, and the past could be left behind if you worked hard enough to build a better future.

Now I understood that the truth was more complicated.

But one thing had never changed.

Livia was my daughter.

And no secret, no document, no fortune, and no threat would ever take that away from me.

I slipped my phone into my pocket and took her hand.

“Nothing we need to worry about today,” I said.

She squeezed my fingers.

“Then can we go get ice cream?””

I laughed for the first time in weeks.

“Absolutely.””

And as we walked toward the sunlight, I made myself a promise.

Whatever truth waited for us next, I would face it with my daughter beside me.

May you like

Not because I needed to prove I was her father.

But because I already was.
