Amused

Chapter 2: The Name They Never Expected

The question hung in the ballroom like a warning.

“Who exactly is your father calling?””

Sebastian’s voice was no longer confident.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not the anger.

Not the confusion.

The fear.

A few minutes earlier, he had been the man who believed he controlled the entire room. He had watched me fall, watched his mother humiliate me, watched Lavinia sit in my chair, and he had never once imagined that I had any power left.

But now he was looking at Mr. Osgood like the old butler had just opened a door he could not close.

Mr. Osgood did not answer him.

He simply held the phone to his ear.

“Mr. Winslow,” he said calmly.

“Your daughter would like to speak with you.””

My heart tightened.

Even after everything, hearing that name spoken aloud felt strange.

Because for the last two years, I had tried so hard to become an Ashworth.

I had learned their traditions.

Memorized their family history.

Attended their charity events.

Smiled beside people who never truly wanted me there.

I had spent so much time proving I belonged that I almost forgot where I came from.

The phone was handed to me.

I stared at the screen.

One name.

One call.

One decision.

“Claire?”” my father’s voice answered immediately.

He always knew when something was wrong.

Even when I tried to hide it.

“Dad.””

The moment I said that word, my voice almost broke.

Not because I was weak.

Because for the first time all evening, I was speaking to someone who was actually on my side.

“What happened?”” he asked.

I looked around the ballroom.

At Sebastian.

At Lavinia.

At Philippa.

All of them watching.

All of them waiting to see if I would collapse.

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“The agreement is terminated.””

Silence.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

My father understood immediately.

He had always been smarter than people gave him credit for.

“Are you certain?””

I looked at Sebastian.

The man who had promised to protect me.

The man who had sworn I was his future.

The man who had just replaced me before our vows were even spoken.

“Yes,” I said.

My voice became steadier.

“I am.””

My father exhaled slowly.

“Then I'll handle the rest.””

The call ended.

The entire room remained silent.

Sebastian stared at me.

“You have no idea what you just did.””

I almost smiled.

Because that sentence proved everything.

He still thought he was the person with something to lose.

“I know exactly what I did.””

He stepped closer.

“You canceled a partnership worth hundreds of millions because you're angry?””

“No.””

I looked directly into his eyes.

“I ended a partnership because I finally understood who I was making one with.””

Lavinia shifted beside him.

Her confidence was beginning to crack.

“Claire,” she said softly, “this doesn't have to become some dramatic revenge story.””

I turned toward her.

That word.

Revenge.

Interesting.

She was already thinking about consequences.

“I don't want revenge, Lavinia.””

She tilted her head.

“Then what do you want?””

I looked at the chair where she had been sitting.

My chair.

The place where she had proudly taken my position.

“I want everyone in this room to remember what happened today.””

Her smile faded.

Before she could respond, Philippa stepped forward.

“You are making a mistake.””

Her voice was colder now.

The performance was over.

The polite society mask had fallen.

“You think your father's money gives you authority?””

I faced her.

“No.””

I paused.

“Knowing my worth does.””

A few guests exchanged looks.

Some people had always known more than they admitted.

The Ashworth family had built their reputation on appearing untouchable.

But powerful families had one weakness.

They depended on everyone believing they were powerful.

And tonight, that belief had started to crack.

Philippa walked closer.

“You came into this family with nothing.””

There it was.

The insult she had been saving.

The one she thought would hurt the most.

“You should be grateful Sebastian chose you.””

I looked at Sebastian.

Waiting.

Waiting for him to deny it.

To tell his mother she was wrong.

To defend the woman he had promised to love.

He said nothing.

That silence answered everything.

I nodded slowly.

“I understand now.””

Sebastian frowned.

“Understand what?””

“That I was never the woman you chose.””

His expression changed.

“You're being ridiculous.””

“No.””

I looked at Lavinia.

“I was the woman you needed.””

The room went still.

Sebastian’s jaw tightened.

Because that was the truth he didn't want spoken.

Two years ago, when his family's company was struggling after a failed expansion, my father had helped stabilize their finances.

Not publicly.

Not with headlines.

Quietly.

A private agreement.

A partnership.

And Sebastian had come into my life during that exact time.

At first, I believed it was fate.

Now, standing in that ballroom, I wondered if it had simply been strategy.

“Claire,” Sebastian said, lowering his voice, “don't do this here.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

His eyes flickered.

“Because we can discuss this privately.””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

The old me would have followed him.

The old me would have protected his reputation.

The old me would have walked away quietly and cried somewhere no one could see.

But that woman was still lying on the marble floor behind me.

And I refused to become her again.

“You wanted everyone to see this,” I said.

“So everyone will see the consequences too.””

Sebastian glanced around.

For the first time, he noticed the guests weren't looking at me with embarrassment.

They were looking at him.

Judging.

Whispering.

The story had changed.

The bride who was supposed to be destroyed was now the person everyone wanted answers from.

A waiter quietly approached the edge of the ballroom.

He looked nervous.

“Mr. Ashworth?””

Sebastian turned.

“What?””

The waiter swallowed.

“There are several reporters outside.””

The room erupted with whispers.

Philippa’s face went pale.

“What reporters?””

The waiter looked uncomfortable.

“They were invited by Mr. Ashworth's office.””

Everyone turned toward Sebastian.

His expression changed.

Not because reporters were there.

Because he realized something.

The humiliation he created was supposed to happen privately.

Controlled.

Managed.

But now it was outside the Ashworth walls.

Public.

Permanent.

I looked at him.

“You invited the world to watch your wedding.””

My voice was quiet.

“Don't be surprised when they watch the ending too.””

Lavinia suddenly grabbed Sebastian’s arm.

“Sebastian, we need to leave.””

He looked at her.

For a moment, I saw panic between them.

Not love.

Not concern.

Panic.

The same panic of people who realize their plan has failed.

Then something unexpected happened.

A phone on the table near Philippa began ringing.

Everyone looked at it.

Philippa picked it up.

Her face changed almost immediately.

“No.””

It was barely a whisper.

Sebastian noticed.

“Mother?””

She ignored him.

Her hand trembled as she listened.

Then she slowly lowered the phone.

“What happened?”” Sebastian asked.

Philippa looked at me.

Not with anger.

With fear.

“Your father just received a notice.””

Sebastian stepped forward.

“What notice?””

Philippa swallowed.

“The bank has frozen the Ashworth accounts connected to the merger.””

The ballroom went silent.

Sebastian stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

I said nothing.

Because I knew.

My father never acted emotionally.

Never.

He waited.

He calculated.

And when he moved, he made sure there was no way back.

Sebastian looked at me.

“You planned this?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

And that frightened him even more.

Because I hadn't planned anything.

I had simply stopped protecting him.

The difference was devastating.

Mr. Osgood stepped closer to me.

“Miss Winslow.””

I turned.

“Yes?””

His expression was serious.

“There is one more matter.””

The entire ballroom seemed to freeze.

“What matter?””

He reached inside a folder he had been carrying all evening.

A folder I had never noticed before.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a single document.

With a familiar name at the top.

My name.

Claire Winslow.

But beneath it was another name.

One that made Sebastian stop breathing.

Because it was not a wedding document.

It was not a business agreement.

It was something that had been prepared long before I ever met Sebastian.

Mr. Osgood looked at me and said,

“Your mother wanted this revealed on your wedding day if the Ashworth family ever betrayed you.””

My fingers went cold.

“My mother?””

I stared at the document.

A woman who had been gone for fifteen years had just entered the ballroom without opening the door.

And somehow, she had left behind a secret that could destroy everything the Ashworths believed about my family.

I looked at the first line.

And my heart stopped.

May you like

Because it began with six words:

*“The Ashworth fortune was never theirs.””*
