Amused

Chapter 5: The Mother Who Never Stopped Looking

The words struck me harder than the revelation about my father.

My mother was alive.

Grace Carter.

The woman I had buried in my memory for seventeen years.

The woman whose photograph I kept in the drawer beside my bed.

The woman whose last birthday card I had read so many times that the ink had almost disappeared.

I grabbed Margaret's wrist.

"Where is she?""

Margaret looked down.

"I don't know.""

"You just said she's alive!""

"I said she was alive when I last saw her.""

"When?""

"Six months ago.""

My knees nearly buckled.

"Six months?""

Margaret nodded.

"She contacted me after years of silence. She wanted to know whether you were safe.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because she asked me not to.""

I pulled away.

"Everyone keeps making decisions about my life without asking me!""

Nathaniel stepped closer.

"Rose, breathe.""

I turned on him.

"Don't tell me to breathe. You've known about this for an hour. I've spent seventeen years mourning a woman who might have been sitting somewhere waiting for me.""

His expression softened.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

He looked down.

For the first time, he seemed less like a billionaire heir and more like a frightened man who had just discovered his entire family history was a lie.

Eleanor sat quietly.

"Rose, I should have told you everything.""

I turned toward her.

"Why didn't you?""

"Because I was afraid Richard would hurt you.""

"He's dead.""

"His influence isn't.""

Margaret reached for the velvet pouch.

"Grace left something with me. Something she said you would need if the truth ever came out.""

She removed a folded sheet of paper.

The handwriting was familiar.

My mother's.

My fingers trembled as I unfolded it.

Margaret,

If you are reading this, then Richard's secret has finally escaped him.

Please tell Rose that I never abandoned her.

I spent years trying to find the truth about what happened at the hospital. Every time I got close, someone destroyed the records or threatened the people helping me.

The girl I gave birth to was not the girl I raised.

I know that now.

But I also know the child I raised was never meant to be a stranger.

If Rose asks about the other baby, tell her to look beneath the old chapel.

And please, Margaret, don't let her go there alone.

Grace.

I read the letter again.

"The old chapel?""

Margaret nodded.

"The Callaway estate has a private chapel. It hasn't been used in years.""

Nathaniel stood.

"We're going there.""

Eleanor immediately shook her head.

"No.""

"Mother, we need answers.""

"Richard kept things there that should never be uncovered.""

Nathaniel looked at her.

"That's exactly why we're going.""

Margaret picked up her handbag.

"I'll come with you.""

I folded the letter carefully and placed it inside my uniform.

"Then let's go.""

The Callaway estate stood on twelve acres outside Greenwich, Connecticut.

A stone driveway curved through towering oak trees before reaching a massive limestone mansion. Its windows glowed warmly against the dark evening sky, but the building looked more like a museum than a home.

Two security vehicles followed our car through the gates.

Nathaniel sat beside me in the back seat.

He had barely spoken since leaving Manhattan.

Finally, he turned.

"Do you remember your childhood?""

"Of course.""

"What do you remember about Grace?""

I looked out the window.

"She sang while cooking. She hated thunderstorms. She kept every drawing I ever made.""

I smiled sadly.

"She used to tell me that the most important thing a mother could give her child was the freedom to become whoever she wanted.""

Nathaniel listened quietly.

"My father never came home for dinner," he said.

"I remember waiting by the window with a plate of food. My mother always told me he was working.""

"Did you love him?""

He considered the question.

"I wanted him to love me.""

That answer hurt more than anything else.

The car stopped outside the mansion.

Marcus opened the door.

"Mr. Callaway, there's someone waiting inside.""

Nathaniel frowned.

"Who?""

"Your father's attorney.""

The man waiting in the entrance hall was thin, impeccably dressed, and at least seventy years old.

He held a leather briefcase.

"Mr. Callaway. My name is Arthur Whitmore. I represented your father for thirty-five years.""

Nathaniel didn't offer his hand.

"What do you want?""

Arthur looked at Eleanor.

"To prevent another tragedy.""

Margaret stepped forward.

"You're too late.""

Arthur's eyes moved to her.

"Mrs. Hayes.""

"Don't pretend you didn't know.""

He sighed.

"I know more than you think.""

Nathaniel pointed toward the staircase.

"We're going to the chapel.""

Arthur immediately shook his head.

"That would be unwise.""

"Why?""

"Because the documents stored beneath it are part of a confidential estate arrangement.""

Nathaniel gave a cold smile.

"That's my estate.""

"Not entirely.""

Arthur opened his briefcase and removed a thick legal folder.

"Your father established a trust shortly before his death. Its provisions were never activated because one of the beneficiaries could not be identified.""

He placed a document on the table.

Nathaniel scanned it.

Then he looked at me.

"Rose.""

I stepped closer.

The document contained two names.

Nathaniel James Callaway.

Rose Elizabeth Carter.

Beneath them was a clause stating that the controlling shares of Callaway Holdings would be transferred jointly to the two beneficiaries upon proof of their identities.

I stared.

"How much?""

Arthur adjusted his glasses.

"Approximately six billion dollars in current assets and controlling interests.""

I stepped back.

"I don't want it.""

Nathaniel looked at me.

"Neither do I.""

Arthur raised an eyebrow.

"That may be difficult. The trust cannot be dissolved without both beneficiaries' signatures.""

Eleanor struck the floor with her cane.

"Richard planned this.""

Arthur looked at her.

"Yes, Mrs. Callaway.""

"Why?""

"Because he believed the children would eventually find each other.""

Margaret shook her head.

"No. He believed they would fight over the money.""

Arthur closed his briefcase.

"Perhaps.""

Nathaniel walked toward him.

"Where are the original hospital records?""

Arthur hesitated.

"In the chapel.""

"Then take us there.""

The private chapel stood behind the eastern wing of the mansion.

Its heavy oak doors creaked when Marcus pushed them open.

Inside, dust covered the wooden pews. A large stained-glass window depicted an angel holding a child.

At the altar stood a marble statue of the Virgin Mary.

Margaret approached the floor.

"Grace said beneath the old chapel.""

Nathaniel crouched and examined the stone tiles.

"There must be a hidden entrance.""

Marcus checked the walls.

Eleanor remained near the doorway.

"Richard used to come here every Sunday. He said this was the only place he could think clearly.""

I noticed something strange about the statue.

One of its hands held a small metal key.

I walked closer.

"Look.""

Nathaniel joined me.

He reached up and turned the key.

A quiet click sounded beneath the altar.

The marble platform shifted slightly.

Marcus helped move it.

Underneath was a narrow metal staircase leading into darkness.

Nathaniel pulled out his phone and switched on the flashlight.

"Stay behind me.""

We descended.

The air smelled of damp stone and old paper.

At the bottom was a small room lined with filing cabinets.

A wooden desk stood in the center.

On it rested a leather-bound book.

I opened it.

The first page contained a hospital record dated thirty years earlier.

Two babies.

Two birth times.

Two different sets of fingerprints.

And a handwritten note:

Original identities confirmed.

I turned the page.

A second document had been attached.

It was a DNA report.

I scanned the first names.

Then I stopped.

The report identified Nathaniel Callaway as the biological son of Eleanor Callaway.

But beneath my name was a different result.

*Biological mother: Grace Carter.*

*Biological father: Richard Callaway.*

I looked up.

"That proves I'm their daughter.""

Arthur nodded.

"Yes.""

"But where is the other baby?""

Nobody answered.

I turned another page.

There was a second DNA report.

The name at the top made my stomach turn.

Victoria Sterling.

Biological father: Richard Callaway.

Biological mother: Vivian Sterling.

I stared at the document.

Nathaniel stepped closer.

"She's my half-sister.""

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"Richard had a daughter with Vivian before you were born.""

I looked toward the staircase.

"Then why did Victoria say my mother stole a baby?""

Arthur removed another envelope from the desk.

"Because Victoria was never supposed to be raised as a Sterling.""

He handed it to Nathaniel.

Inside was a letter from Richard.

Victoria is my daughter. Vivian knows this.

But she also knows the child I intended to protect was not Victoria.

The second daughter was meant to inherit nothing. The first was meant to inherit everything.

Nathaniel frowned.

"First daughter?""

Arthur looked at me.

"Your father had another child before you and Nathaniel.""

My hands went cold.

"What?""

Eleanor shook her head.

"That's impossible.""

Arthur opened the final document.

It was a hospital discharge record.

Three babies had been listed.

Not two.

Three.

I looked at the names.

One was Nathaniel.

One was Rose.

The third was marked as deceased.

But beside the word deceased was a handwritten correction.

Transferred alive.

My breath caught.

"Who was the third baby?""

Arthur looked directly at me.

"Your father's first daughter.""

Nathaniel stared.

"Who took her?""

Arthur slowly closed the folder.

"Your father.""

A heavy sound came from above us.

The chapel doors slammed shut.

Marcus immediately ran toward the stairs.

Then we heard a woman's voice.

"Don't bother.""

Victoria.

She stood at the top of the staircase.

In her hand was a small black pistol.

Behind her stood Thomas.

And beside him was the woman from the wedding.

Dr. Helen Brooks.

May you like

Victoria smiled.

"Now that everyone is here, we can finally finish what Richard started.""
