Chapter 7: The Man Who Chose Her Name
The voice on the phone disappeared.
But the damage was already done.
Adeline stood frozen in the hidden room, staring at Enzo.
For the first time since she met him, he looked afraid.
Not cautious.
Not angry.
Afraid.
“Who was that?”” she asked.
Enzo didn’t answer immediately.
The silence stretched until it became unbearable.
“Enzo.””
His fingers tightened around the phone.
“My father.””
Adeline felt a chill move through her body.
“The man in the portrait?””
“Yes.””
“The man who supposedly died?””
Enzo looked at her.
“He never died.””
The room seemed to shrink.
All the secrets.
All the lies.
All the years people had spent hiding the truth.
Everything pointed back to one person.
The founder of the Marchetti empire.
The man who had built an entire world out of fear.
“Your father has been alive this whole time?””
“Yes.””
“And everyone knew?””
“No.””
Enzo looked toward the door.
“Not everyone.””
Adeline understood immediately.
Richard.
Camilla.
Mrs. Bellini.
How many people had known?
How many had protected the secret?
“How long has he been controlling things?””
Enzo’s expression hardened.
“Since before I was born.””
The answer disturbed her.
“You mean he controlled you?””
A pause.
“Yes.””
Adeline looked at the powerful man standing in front of her.
The man everyone feared.
The man who could silence an entire room with one sentence.
And suddenly, she saw something different.
Not weakness.
Something worse.
A person who had survived.
“He made you into this.””
Enzo didn’t deny it.
“My father believed fear was the only language people respected.””
“And you?””
“I learned that fear was useful.””
Adeline studied him.
“But you hated him.””
“Yes.””
“Then why protect his empire?””
His eyes met hers.
“Because destroying it carelessly would destroy innocent people too.””
The answer was not what she expected.
She expected arrogance.
A confession of greed.
Instead, she saw someone trapped inside a legacy he never chose.
Before she could speak, the lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the entire estate went dark.
Enzo immediately moved.
“Stay behind me.””
Adeline almost laughed.
Even now.
Even after everything.
He still thought protecting her meant keeping her away from danger.
A loud crash echoed from downstairs.
Then another.
Someone had entered.
Not a servant.
Not a guest.
The security system should have stopped them.
But it didn’t.
Enzo pulled out his phone.
“No signal.””
Adeline looked around.
“How is that possible?””
His expression changed.
“Because someone inside the house disabled it.””
The words sent a wave of fear through her.
Someone inside.
Someone close.
A shadow moved outside the hidden room.
Enzo reached for the door.
Adeline grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed.
The shadow had stopped.
Whoever was outside was listening.
Then a voice came through the darkness.
“Enzo.””
The voice was old.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
But Adeline recognized it.
The same voice from the phone.
Her grandfather.
The man who had chosen her name.
Enzo slowly opened the door.
An elderly man stood in the hallway.
He looked nothing like the monster Adeline imagined.
That was what made him dangerous.
He wore a simple dark suit.
Held a wooden cane.
And smiled like he was greeting family.
“Adeline.””
Hearing her name from him made her skin crawl.
“You’re Elena’s daughter.””
Adeline stared.
“Who is Elena?””
The old man smiled.
A mistake.
A small one.
But she saw it.
“You don’t know?””
Enzo stepped forward.
“Her name is Adeline.””
The old man looked at him.
“You still haven’t told her.””
“Told me what?””
Nobody answered.
The old man slowly walked closer.
“You were not born Adeline Croft.””
Her breath caught.
“What?””
Enzo looked away.
And that hurt more than the stranger’s words.
“You knew?””
The old man smiled.
“She was born into this family.””
Adeline shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
He tilted his head.
“Your mother changed your identity to hide you.””
“From you?””
The old man’s smile faded slightly.
“From everyone.””
A cold silence followed.
Then Adeline noticed something.
The old man wasn’t looking at her like an enemy.
He was looking at her like something he owned.
“I chose your name,” he said softly.
Her stomach turned.
“Why?””
“Because your mother wanted you to have a name nobody connected to the Marchetti family.””
He looked at Enzo.
“She thought she could erase blood.””
Adeline stepped back.
“What does that mean?””
The old man smiled.
“It means, my dear, that you have spent your entire life believing you were ordinary.””
May you like
A pause.
“You were never ordinary.””
