Chapter 5: The Man Who Never Left
Adeline read the letter three times.
The words didn’t change.
The handwriting didn’t disappear.
The truth didn’t become easier.
Someone inside the Marchetti estate had been waiting for her.
But who?
The next morning, she found herself standing outside Enzo’s office.
She raised her hand.
Then stopped.
For the first time in her life, she wasn’t afraid of knocking.
She was afraid of what would happen after the door opened.
Finally, she knocked.
“Come in.””
Enzo sat behind his desk.
He looked like he hadn’t slept.
Neither had she.
“You knew.””
It wasn’t a question.
Enzo looked up.
“Yes.””
“Who is the man my mother was afraid of?””
His jaw tightened.
“There are things you shouldn’t know.””
Adeline walked inside.
“Stop saying that.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
“That I shouldn’t know.””
Her voice shook.
“I spent my whole life not knowing.””
Silence.
“My mother disappeared. Everyone lied. And now I find out the person who could answer everything has been standing in front of me this entire time.””
Enzo leaned back.
“Evelyn was investigating my father.””
Adeline froze.
“Your father?””
“Yes.””
“The former head of the family?””
Enzo nodded.
“The man who built the Marchetti empire.””
“What did she find?””
Enzo looked away.
“Evidence.””
“Of what?””
“Murders.””
The word was quiet.
But it changed the room.
Adeline stared.
“My mother discovered your father killed people?””
“Yes.””
“And you believed her?””
“I did.””
“Then why didn’t you expose him?””
A painful silence followed.
Because the answer was obvious.
Power.
Fear.
Family.
Enzo finally spoke.
“Because when I tried, Evelyn disappeared.””
Adeline’s anger softened.
Only slightly.
“You thought he killed her.””
“I knew.””
The certainty in his voice frightened her.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I couldn’t prove it.””
Adeline looked at him.
“And now?””
Enzo reached into a drawer.
He placed an old file on the desk.
The cover had one name.
EVELYN CROFT.
“I kept everything.””
Adeline opened it.
Documents.
Photos.
Reports.
And one picture that made her freeze.
A photograph of her mother standing beside a man.
Not Enzo.
Older.
Gray hair.
Cold eyes.
A familiar face.
She had seen him before.
On the walls.
In portraits.
“The man who built this family.””
Enzo nodded.
“My father.””
Adeline turned the photo over.
There was writing on the back.
A date.
And one sentence.
*The daughter will come back eventually.*
Her fingers went numb.
“He knew about me?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Enzo looked at her.
“Because he was the one who arranged your adoption.””
Adeline stepped back.
The room spun.
“No.””
“It’s true.””
“My mother…”
“Your mother tried to hide you.””
“From him?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did I end up alone?””
Enzo didn’t answer.
And that silence told her enough.
Someone had interfered.
Someone had separated her from the only person protecting her.
The office door suddenly opened.
Neither of them expected it.
Camilla entered.
But this time, she wasn’t smiling.
She looked terrified.
“Enzo.””
He stood immediately.
“What happened?””
Camilla closed the door behind her.
“He knows.””
The room went still.
Adeline looked between them.
“Who?””
Camilla swallowed.
“The man who has been searching for her.””
Enzo’s expression darkened.
“He’s here?””
Camilla nodded.
“He arrived this morning.””
Adeline felt cold.
“Who?””
Camilla looked at her.
And for the first time, there was no arrogance.
No cruelty.
Only fear.
“Your uncle.””
Adeline frowned.
“I don’t have an uncle.””
Camilla whispered:
“You do.””
A pause.
“The man who raised you after your mother disappeared.””
Adeline felt the world shift.
Because she suddenly remembered.
The man from her childhood.
The man who always told her not to ask about her mother.
The man who controlled every part of her life.
The man who had sent her to the Marchetti estate.
Her hands began shaking.
“No.””
Enzo stepped closer.
“Adeline.””
She looked at him.
“He’s the one who hired me.””
Nobody answered.
Because they already knew.
The door behind them opened.
Slowly.
A familiar voice filled the room.
“I see you finally found the truth.””
Adeline turned.
And every memory she had buried came rushing back.
The man standing there was older.
His hair was grayer.
But his smile was exactly the same.
“Hello, Adeline.””
Her blood ran cold.
“Uncle Richard.””
May you like
He smiled.
“I’ve been waiting twenty years for you to come home.””
