Chapter 7: The Secret Buried Since the Day He Was Born
I had spent thirty-eight years protecting one truth.
Not because I was ashamed.
Not because I wanted to deceive my son.
But because I was terrified of losing him.
And now, sitting in my living room with Harrison staring at me, I realized the secret I had hidden to protect him might become the weapon that destroyed us.
“Mom.””
His voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
“Why is my birth record in that folder?””
I looked down at the paper in my hands.
The old hospital document.
The one I had kept locked away in a box at the back of my closet.
The one I never expected anyone else to see.
Daniel stood near the doorway, uncomfortable.
“I think I should leave.””
“No,” Harrison said.
His eyes never left mine.
“You stay.””
Daniel nodded.
Because he knew this wasn’t just my family’s problem anymore.
Sloan had made sure of that.
“Harrison,” I whispered.
He waited.
I had imagined this moment many times over the years.
I imagined him older.
I imagined sitting him down gently.
I imagined having the right words.
But life never gives you the perfect moment.
Sometimes it forces the truth out in the middle of a storm.
“I need you to understand something first.””
His expression tightened.
“What?””
“You are my son.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I reached across the table.
“You need to hear me.””
His face softened slightly.
“You are my son in every way that matters.””
The words came out with more emotion than I expected.
“But?””
There it was.
The question.
The one I had avoided.
I took a breath.
“The man who raised you was not your biological father.””
The room became completely silent.
Harrison stared at me.
I watched the sentence hit him.
Like a physical blow.
“No.””
I swallowed.
“Harrison—”
“No.””
He stood suddenly.
“No, that’s not possible.””
“I’m sorry.””
“You’re sorry?””
His voice cracked.
“You’re telling me at thirty-eight years old that the person I thought was my father wasn’t my father?””
I stood too.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
I had no answer.
“When you were five? Ten? Twenty?””
His laugh was painful.
“Maybe never?””
“Harrison.””
“No, Mom.””
He backed away.
“You let me believe something that wasn’t true my entire life.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised him.
“Yes, I did.””
“Why?””
Because I remembered.
The hospital.
The rain outside.
The tiny newborn baby in my arms.
And the promise I made.
I closed my eyes.
“Because your father left before you were born.””
Harrison froze.
“What?””
“Your biological father left when I told him I was pregnant.””
Daniel looked away.
Even he seemed affected by the story.
“He didn’t want responsibility. He said he wasn’t ready.””
My voice trembled.
“I was twenty-six years old. I was scared. I had no idea how I was going to raise a child alone.””
“So what happened?””
I looked at the floor.
“Then your father came back.””
“The man I knew?””
I nodded.
“He knew everything.””
Harrison’s eyes narrowed.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
The word hung there.
“He chose to raise you.””
Harrison sat down slowly.
“He knew I wasn’t his?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because he loved you.””
My voice broke.
“He loved you more than anyone could have asked him to.””
Harrison looked away.
The pain on his face was unbearable.
“He was my dad.””
“Yes.””
“He still is.””
“Yes.””
“Then why does this matter?””
That question broke my heart.
Because I knew exactly why.
“Because Sloan found out.””
His face changed.
“She used this?””
Daniel spoke quietly.
“That’s why she wanted control.””
Harrison looked at him.
“Explain.””
Daniel opened the folder.
“Sloan discovered the identity of your biological father.””
My blood ran cold.
Harrison looked at me.
“Who?””
I closed my eyes.
I didn’t want to say the name.
Because saying it would make the past real again.
“Richard Hale.””
Harrison frowned.
“I don’t know that name.””
“You weren’t supposed to.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Sloan found out he became very wealthy.””
Harrison’s expression changed.
“What?””
I nodded slowly.
“Your biological father built a company years later.””
“How wealthy?””
Daniel answered.
“Hundreds of millions.””
The room went silent.
Harrison stared at the folder.
And suddenly everything made sense.
Sloan didn’t just want my estate.
She wanted a connection to a fortune even bigger.
“She knew,” Harrison whispered.
I nodded.
“She knew before I did.””
Daniel continued.
“She believed if she could prove Harrison was Richard Hale’s son, she could position herself to benefit.””
Harrison looked sick.
“She was going to use me.””
“Yes.””
“And you knew?””
The question was directed at me.
I looked down.
“No.””
That was the truth.
“I never contacted him.””
“Why?””
“Because he left.””
I wiped my eyes.
“And because your father—the man who raised you—was the only father you ever needed.””
Harrison sat quietly.
Then he asked the question I feared most.
“Did my father know Richard was alive?””
I looked away.
“Yes.””
The room froze.
“What?””
“He knew.””
“How?””
“Richard contacted me years later.””
Harrison stood again.
“You talked to him?””
“Once.””
“And you never told me?””
“I made a choice.””
“A choice for me.””
“Yes.””
His anger returned.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I watched you grow up.””
My voice rose.
“I watched you become kind. Loyal. Strong. And I knew the moment I told you about Richard Hale, your entire identity would change.””
Harrison’s eyes filled.
“But maybe I deserved to know.””
The sentence hurt because it was true.
Maybe he did.
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel whispered:
“That’s probably him.””
I stared.
“Who?””
Daniel’s face turned serious.
“Richard Hale.””
My hands went cold.

the man who started this secret was finally calling.
