Chapter 6: The Document That Changed Everything
The original documents arrived the next morning.
Not by mail.
Not by email.
By a person.
A man named Daniel Whitmore.
The same man whose name had appeared on Sloan’s hidden paperwork.
I expected someone threatening.
Someone arrogant.
Someone like Sloan.
Instead, Daniel looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.
He stood on my porch holding a brown folder.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
I didn’t invite him inside.
“Sorry for what?””
His eyes moved toward Harrison.
“Everything.””
Harrison stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I was Sloan’s financial consultant.””
“And now?””
“Now I’m the person who realizes I helped someone destroy a family.””
I stared at the folder.
“What’s inside?””
He looked at me.
“The truth.””
I took it.
The weight of the folder felt strange.
It was just paper.
But sometimes paper could ruin lives.
Sometimes it could save them.
We sat in the living room.
Daniel placed his hands together.
“Sloan came to me three years ago.””
Harrison looked up.
“Three years?””
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
Before the wedding.
Before I thought Sloan was family.
“What did she want?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“She wanted information about your assets.””
“Why?””
“At first, she told me she was planning for your retirement.””
I almost laughed.
“Of course she did.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I believed her.””
“What changed?””
He looked at the folder.
“She asked me to create documents that would make it appear you were unable to manage your finances.””
Harrison stood.
“And you did?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
I expected anger.
I expected to feel betrayed.
But strangely, I felt tired.
Because Sloan had surrounded herself with people who believed she was entitled to take pieces of my life.
Daniel opened the folder.
“The documents were never filed.””
Harrison frowned.
“Why?””
“Because I discovered something.””
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Sloan had another reason for wanting control.””
I felt cold.
“What reason?””
He hesitated.
Then handed me a piece of paper.
I read the first line.
And my hands started shaking.
Because it wasn’t about my money.
Not entirely.
It was about Harrison.
A medical record.
A name.
A date.
Something from twenty years ago.
Something I had buried.
Something Sloan somehow discovered.
Harrison saw my expression.
“Mom?””
I looked at Daniel.
“How did she get this?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“She paid someone.””
“Who?””
His eyes moved to Harrison.
“I don’t know.””
The room became silent.
Because suddenly, Sloan’s plan looked different.
She wasn’t only trying to control my estate.
She was trying to destroy the one secret that could tear my son’s entire life apart.
Harrison reached for the paper.
I stopped him.
“Mom?””
I couldn’t speak.
Because the secret Sloan found was not about money.
May you like
It was about the night Harrison was born.
And the truth I had kept from him for thirty-eight years.
