Chapter 8: The Man Who Protected the School

I couldn’t breathe.

Principal Harris.

The man who had apologized to me.

The man who looked ashamed when he saw my ruined lunch.

The man who claimed to want the truth.

He was the person in the video.

“No.””

My voice came out quietly.

Madison watched me.

“I reacted the same way.””

“You knew?””

“My father showed me.””

“When?””

“Yesterday.””

I looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“Because my father made sure nobody would believe me.””

I turned toward Principal Harris.

He was sitting behind his desk.

Silent.

I expected him to deny it.

To become angry.

To call security.

Instead, he looked tired.

“Emma.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t.””

He looked down.

“I never wanted you involved.””

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Did you hurt my mother?””

His silence was terrifying.

“Answer me.””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

“I did not hurt your mother.””

“Then explain.””

He rubbed his face.

“I met with her that night.””

“Why?””

“She discovered something.””

“What?””

He looked at the door.

Then lowered his voice.

“The school was being used.””

“By who?””

He hesitated.

“Your father’s business rivals.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Years ago, several families used Hawthorne to build connections. They exchanged favors. They protected each other.””

“And my mother found out?””

“Yes.””

“Then why were you meeting her?””

“Because I was helping her.””

That made no sense.

“You were helping her?””

He nodded.

“I was supposed to deliver evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

His eyes moved to the documents on his desk.

“Financial manipulation.””

I stared.

“Explain.””

“Some donors weren’t donating because they cared about education.””

A pause.

“They were buying influence.””

The pieces started connecting.

Madison’s father.

The board.

The hidden files.

My mother’s investigation.

“But the video…”

Principal Harris looked broken.

“My car was seen near hers because I tried to stop her.””

“Stop her?””

“Stop her from leaving.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“Because she was going to confront them.””

“Who?””

He whispered:

“The people who controlled Hawthorne.””

Before I could ask another question, the office lights went out.

Everyone froze.

Then the emergency alarm started.

A loud, painful sound.

Students screamed in the hallway.

Principal Harris stood immediately.

“What happened?””

His phone rang.

He answered.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

A pause.

“No, don’t let anyone leave.””

He hung up.

“What is it?”” Madison asked.

He looked at me.

“The evidence room was broken into.””

My stomach dropped.

“What evidence?””

“The files your mother collected.””

Ten minutes later, security officers searched the building.

But whoever broke in was gone.

The room looked destroyed.

Cabinets opened.

Papers everywhere.

Except one thing.

One folder remained untouched.

Principal Harris picked it up.

My name was written on it.

Emma Bennett.

My hands went cold.

“What is that?””

He looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

I took the folder.

Inside was a letter.

From my mother.

My fingers shook as I opened it.

Emma,

If you are reading this, then they failed to keep the truth hidden.

I stopped reading.

My eyes filled.

My mother had written to me.

Years ago.

The letter continued.

I never wanted you involved in this. I wanted you to grow up without carrying my battles.

A tear fell onto the paper.

But some people believe power gives them the right to hurt others.

That is why I need you to know something.

The person who betrayed me was not a stranger.

It was someone we trusted.

Someone who knew our family.

Someone who knew you.

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.

I never found out if he acted alone.

Then another page slipped out.

A photograph.

A group of people standing outside Hawthorne Academy.

My mother.

Principal Harris.

Madison’s father.

And one more person.

A person I recognized instantly.

Someone from my own home.

My heart stopped.

Because standing beside them was my father’s closest friend.

His business partner.

The man who had been my godfather since I was born.

The man who attended my mother’s funeral.

The man who comforted me when I cried.

I whispered his name.

And Madison looked at me.

“You know him?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because the person who had been helping my father run Bennett Enterprises for twenty years…

May you like

was the same person my mother had been investigating.
