Amused

Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Plan

For the first time in my life, I saw fear in my father’s eyes.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Fear.

“Who sent that?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

He locked his phone.

“Emma, I need you to trust me.””

I shook my head.

“That’s exactly what you asked me to do before.””

He looked hurt.

But I couldn’t stop.

“You told me everything was about having a normal experience. But someone changed my records. Someone brought me here.””

“I’m trying to find out who.””

“But you already know it’s someone close to you.””

Silence.

That was my answer.

The next morning, Hawthorne Academy felt different.

The cafeteria where Madison humiliated me was no longer just a room.

It was evidence.

A place where everyone had chosen sides.

The school board investigation was everywhere.

Teachers looked nervous.

Students whispered.

And Madison?

She was strangely quiet.

That scared me more.

People like Madison didn’t become calm because they felt sorry.

They became calm because they were planning.

During lunch, I sat at the same table.

The same table where everything started.

Except this time, someone sat across from me.

Madison.

I looked up.

“What do you want?””

She placed her tray down.

“I want to talk.””

I almost smiled.

“Since when?””

She ignored that.

“I didn’t know who you were.””

“I know.””

“If I had known…”

I interrupted.

“That’s the problem.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“You wouldn’t have done it to me if you knew my last name.””

She had no response.

Because she knew I was right.

Finally, she whispered:

“My father told me not to mess with you.””

I frowned.

“Your father knew?””

She looked away.

“He knows more than you think.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Before she answered, a voice interrupted.

“Emma.””

I turned.

It was Daniel Brooks.

The student council president.

One of the few people at Hawthorne who had never treated me differently.

He looked nervous.

“I need to show you something.””

Madison stood.

“I should go.””

“No,” I said.

She looked surprised.

“Stay.””

Because for the first time, I thought maybe she wasn’t the biggest threat.

Daniel handed me an envelope.

“Where did you get this?””

“Someone left it in my locker.””

I opened it.

Inside were copies of documents.

Financial records.

School board communications.

And one name appeared again and again.

Bennett Foundation.

But not my father.

Someone else.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then I froze.

Because the signature at the bottom belonged to…

my mother.

I looked up.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I thought so too.””

Madison crossed her arms.

“Now you understand.””

I stared at her.

“Understand what?””

“That this school isn’t just about rich kids bullying poor kids.””

She looked around the cafeteria.

“It’s about powerful people protecting their secrets.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From my father.

*Come home immediately. We need to talk about your mother.*

My heart sank.

Because my mother had been dead for three years.

And my father had never once said her name without sadness.

I looked back at the document.

The signature.

The date.

The approval.

Everything pointed to one impossible truth.

My mother had a connection to Hawthorne Academy.

A connection my father had hidden from me.

And then Madison whispered the words that changed everything.

“Emma… your mother didn’t send you here.””

May you like

She looked directly into my eyes.

“She was trying to expose what this school did.””
