Amused

Chapter 6: The Father’s Secret

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.

The words were simple.

The meaning was impossible.

*The man meeting your wife that night was your father.*

I looked at Daniel.

Then at the photograph.

Then back at Daniel.

“No.””

It came out automatically.

Not as a response.

As a defense.

Because sometimes the mind rejects the truth before the heart even has a chance to feel it.

“My father was in the hospital that night,” I said.

Daniel didn’t argue.

He simply placed the folder on the desk.

“I checked the timestamps three times.””

I opened it.

The image was grainy.

Black and white.

Taken from a security camera outside the hospital.

But there was no mistaking the shape of the man standing beside Evelyn.

The posture.

The height.

The familiar way he held his shoulders.

My father.

Richard Whitmore.

A man who had been dead for fourteen years.

I sat down slowly.

Ethan didn’t speak.

That bothered me more than anything.

Because he wasn’t shocked.

He wasn’t confused.

He was remembering.

“You knew.””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Ethan looked at me.

“Adrian…”

“You knew.””

His silence confirmed it.

I stood so quickly the chair moved backward.

“You knew my father was involved?””

“I knew he met Evelyn.””

“When?””

“After she left the hospital.””

“And you never told me?””

Ethan’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Not guilt.

Pain.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

But there was no humor in it.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I pointed at the photograph.

“My wife.””

“My daughter.””

“My father.””

“My brother.””

“Everyone was protecting me while they destroyed the truth around me.””

Ethan looked down.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“You made choices.””

The room went silent.

My father, Richard Whitmore, had always been larger than life.

He was the man who built the foundation of the Whitmore name before I ever entered the business world.

To outsiders, he was brilliant.

Disciplined.

A visionary.

To me, he was complicated.

He loved success more than anything.

Sometimes even more than people.

Growing up, I learned quickly that affection was something you earned.

A perfect grade.

A successful project.

A business achievement.

My father didn’t say “I’m proud of you.””

He said things like:

“You’re finally becoming the man you need to be.””

At the time, I thought that was love.

Maybe because I wanted it to be.

But there was one thing I never questioned.

His loyalty to family.

Until now.

“Why was he there?”” I asked.

Ethan looked at me.

“I don’t know everything.””

I stared at him.

“You’re running out of chances to say that.””

He accepted the anger.

“I know.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

Ethan walked toward the window.

“When Evelyn discovered the records were changed, she became afraid.””

“Afraid of who?””

“Your father.””

The answer hurt more than I expected.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ethan turned around.

“Because she believed he knew more about Charlotte’s birth than he admitted.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“What did he want from her?””

“I don’t know.””

“Ethan.””

“I swear.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“I only know what Evelyn told me afterward.””

“What did she tell you?””

“That your father offered to fix everything.””

“Fix what?””

“The records.””

The room felt colder.

“He could change hospital records?””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“Your father had influence. Money. Connections.””

I clenched my jaw.

“And what did Evelyn say?””

“That she didn’t want a lie.””

Those words sounded like her.

Evelyn always hated shortcuts.

Even when they benefited her.

Even when they protected her.

“She wanted the truth,” Ethan continued.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Because she was afraid you would lose everything.””

“What does that mean?””

“She knew how much your father controlled the company.””

I froze.

My father had passed away before Charlotte was old enough to remember him.

But when he died, I inherited more than money.

I inherited a business empire.

A board.

A legacy.

A name.

“You think my father threatened her?””

“I think he gave her a choice.””

“What choice?””

Ethan’s face tightened.

“Protect Charlotte’s future…”

He paused.

“Or expose the truth and risk destroying the Whitmore family.””

I looked at the photograph.

My father.

Standing beside my wife.

A conversation that happened without me.

A decision that changed my entire life.

Then I noticed something.

A detail I hadn’t seen before.

The car behind them.

The license plate.

“Daniel.””

He stepped forward.

“Yes?””

“Can you enhance this?””

“I already did.””

He handed me another image.

The car was clearer.

And below it was a name.

A company registration.

Not my father’s.

Not mine.

Someone else’s.

I looked at the name.

My heart dropped.

“Who is this?””

Daniel hesitated.

“The company belonged to someone named Victor Hale.””

The name hit me immediately.

Victor Hale.

My father’s former business partner.

The same man Ethan had mentioned.

The same man who could prove Charlotte wasn’t my biological daughter.

“How is he connected to my father?””

Daniel answered carefully.

“They built Whitmore Industries together before your father bought him out.””

I stared at him.

“Why have I never heard this name?””

Ethan spoke quietly.

“Because your father erased him.””

I turned.

“What?””

“Victor wasn’t just a business partner.””

Ethan looked at the photograph.

“He was your father’s biggest secret.””

I spent the next hour searching through old company records.

Most people believed my success story started when I founded my first technology company.

They didn’t know I had grown up around business.

They didn’t know my father had spent decades building an empire before handing pieces of it to me.

And they definitely didn’t know about Victor Hale.

Because every mention of him had disappeared.

Not hidden.

Removed.

That required power.

Money.

Access.

The same things someone had used to alter Rosa’s payroll.

The same things someone had used to manipulate Charlotte’s records.

The pattern was becoming impossible to ignore.

“Why now?”” I asked.

Ethan sat across from me.

“What?””

“Why are all these secrets appearing now?””

He didn’t answer.

I already knew.

Because someone wanted them revealed.

Or someone was afraid I was about to find them.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

The same person.

I answered immediately.

“Who are you?””

Silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

“You finally found Victor Hale.””

I stood.

“Who is this?””

“You should be asking why your father wanted him forgotten.””

“Where did you get my number?””

A quiet laugh.

“Adrian, I’ve had your number for years.””

The sentence sent a chill through me.

“Who are you?””

“You still don’t recognize my voice?””

I froze.

There was something familiar.

Something buried deep.

A memory.

A woman crying.

A hospital hallway.

A voice whispering my name.

“No.””

The woman sighed.

“I knew you wouldn’t.””

“Tell me who you are.””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m the person who was there the night Charlotte was born.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?””

“I can’t meet you.””

“Why?””

“Because someone is watching me.””

“Who?””

The line went quiet.

Then she whispered:

“The same person who stole Rosa’s money.””

I looked at Ethan.

He looked back at me.

Both of us knew what that meant.

Someone close.

Someone with access.

Someone inside my family.

“Tell me their name.””

The woman took a breath.

Then said:

“Adrian…”

Her voice broke.

“I’m sorry.””

“Sorry for what?””

The answer came softly.

“Because the person you’re looking for isn’t trying to hide the truth from you.””

A pause.

“They’re trying to make sure you never live long enough to discover it.””

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed instantly.

“What happened?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Mr. Whitmore…”

“What?””

His face had gone pale.

“The security team found someone inside the mansion.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Daniel swallowed.

“They won’t say.””

“Why?””

“Because the person was found in your office.””

I looked toward the hallway.

My office.

The place where secrets kept appearing.

The place where someone had searched for answers.

The place where someone had entered without permission.

“Are they still there?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Did they identify them?””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

May you like

Then back at me.

“It’s Rosa Martinez.””
