Amused

Chapter 7: The Family Friend Who Lied

Richard Bennett arrived at the mansion before noon.

Alexander had insisted I didn’t face him alone.

For the first time in my life, someone was standing beside me.

Not because they needed something.

Because they cared.

The mansion looked different when I returned.

The same walls.

The same expensive furniture.

But the illusion was gone.

It wasn’t a beautiful home anymore.

It was a crime scene filled with memories.

Richard walked into the living room wearing his usual expensive suit.

He smiled when he saw me.

“Emma.””

The way he said my name almost made me sick.

Like nothing had changed.

Like he wasn’t part of the reason I lost twelve years.

He opened his arms.

“I heard there was some confusion.””

I stepped back.

He noticed.

His smile disappeared.

“Emma?””

Alexander stood beside me.

“There’s no confusion, Richard.””

Richard looked at him.

Then his expression changed.

“You.””

Alexander’s eyes narrowed.

“Yes.””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know what you think you found—”

“We found everything.””

Alexander placed a folder on the table.

Richard didn’t touch it.

He didn’t need to.

He already knew.

“You helped Victoria transfer company funds after Daniel’s death.””

Richard laughed.

A nervous laugh.

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at him.

“You signed the documents.””

His eyes moved to me.

And something changed.

The fake kindness disappeared.

“You always were more observant than your mother gave you credit for.””

The words shocked me.

Not because they were kind.

Because they proved he knew.

He knew exactly how my mother treated me.

“You knew?””

Richard looked away.

“I knew enough.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew she was hiding my inheritance?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I remembered him standing at my father’s funeral.

Putting a hand on my shoulder.

Telling me:

“Your father would want you to stay strong.””

The memory suddenly felt disgusting.

“You lied to me.””

Richard sighed.

“Emma, you need to understand something. Business is complicated.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

My voice was stronger than I expected.

“Stealing from a child isn’t complicated.””

The room went quiet.

Richard looked surprised.

Maybe because he still saw me as the sixteen-year-old girl who stayed silent.

But I wasn’t her anymore.

He looked at Alexander.

“You’re making a mistake protecting her.””

Alexander didn’t move.

“I’m protecting the truth.””

Richard smiled coldly.

“You think she’s special because she helped you once?””

I looked at Alexander.

But his expression didn’t change.

Richard continued.

“She’s just emotional. Just like her father.””

That sentence changed everything.

Alexander stepped forward.

“Do not compare her to Daniel Bennett.””

Richard raised an eyebrow.

“Why?””

Alexander’s voice became dangerous.

“Because Daniel Bennett had integrity.””

The insult landed.

Richard looked away.

The lawyer beside Alexander opened another file.

“There’s more.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

“Evidence showing you and Victoria attempted to modify the trust documents after Mr. Bennett’s death.””

My mother appeared at the doorway.

She had been listening.

“Richard.””

Everyone turned.

Her face was pale.

Richard looked at her.

“You should have controlled your daughter.””

My stomach dropped.

Controlled?

That was what they thought.

Not loved.

Not protected.

Controlled.

My mother looked terrified.

“You said there wouldn’t be evidence.””

Richard laughed.

“You said she would never find out.””

I looked between them.

All these years.

They weren’t just hiding things.

They were depending on my silence.

But silence was over.

Richard walked toward the door.

“This isn’t finished.””

Alexander’s security stepped forward.

Richard stopped.

Then he looked at me.

“You really think Alexander Hayes cares about you?””

The question bothered me.

Not because I believed him.

Because a small part of me still feared losing the one person who had finally seen me.

Richard smiled.

“People like him don’t save people like you without a reason.””

After he left, I stood frozen.

Alexander noticed.

“Don’t listen to him.””

I looked at him.

“Why do you care?””

He was quiet.

Too quiet.

Then he answered.

“Because twelve years ago, you were the only person who stopped to help me.””

“That was just kindness.””

“No.””

He looked directly at me.

“That was courage.””

My heart felt strangely heavy.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Emma…”

I knew from his face.

Something was wrong.

“What happened?””

He lowered the phone.

“The police found something in Richard’s office.””

“What?””

Alexander swallowed.

“They found a recording.””

I stared at him.

“A recording of what?””

He looked at the phone screen.

May you like

Then quietly said:

“A conversation between your mother and your father.””
