Amused

Chapter 2: The Secret From The Past

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

The mansion that had been filled with music and fake laughter became completely silent.

My mother stared at Alexander.

My sisters stared at me.

And I stood there with my hands still wet, trying to understand what he had just said.

Twelve years ago.

The accident.

My mind went back immediately.

I was sixteen.

My father had still been alive.

And Alexander Hayes was just a stranger whose name I never knew.

It was raining that night.

I remembered driving home from school with my father. He had always been the person who picked me up, no matter how busy he was.

That was before everything changed.

We saw a car crash near the side of the road.

My father stopped.

“Someone needs help,” he said.

I remembered holding an umbrella while running through the rain.

A young man was trapped inside the damaged vehicle.

He was bleeding.

Terrified.

But alive.

My father and I stayed until emergency workers arrived.

I remembered the stranger looking at me before they carried him away.

“Thank you,” he whispered.

I never saw him again.

Until tonight.

Alexander looked at me like he was seeing a memory come back to life.

“You were there,” he said.

I swallowed.

“I don’t understand.””

He took a step closer.

“I was nineteen years old. I had just started my first company. Everyone thought I was reckless. That night, I lost control of my car on that road.””

His eyes softened.

“Your father stopped. You helped me.””

I looked at him carefully.

“You remember me?””

“I never forgot.””

The words made my chest tighten.

Because there was something painful about being remembered by a stranger while being forgotten by my own family.

My mother suddenly stepped forward.

“Alexander, I think there’s been a misunderstanding.””

His expression turned cold.

“No. There hasn’t.””

She forced a laugh.

“Emma was young. She probably doesn’t even remember.””

I looked at her.

That hurt more than I expected.

She wasn’t trying to protect me.

She was trying to erase me.

“I remember,” I said quietly.

Everyone looked at me.

I continued.

“I remember Dad stopping the car.””

My voice shook.

“I remember you.””

Alexander looked surprised.

“You do?””

I nodded.

“You told me you wanted to thank us someday.””

A small smile appeared on his face.

“I did.””

My mother’s fingers tightened around her glass.

“Emma, please go finish your work.””

The room went quiet again.

Alexander slowly turned toward her.

“Your work?””

My mother hesitated.

“She helps around the house.””

Alexander looked at my apron.

Then at the empty plates in my hands.

“Helps?””

The way he said the word made my mother uncomfortable.

“She prefers staying busy.””

I almost laughed.

Preferred?

I wanted to say something.

I wanted to finally tell the truth.

But years of being ignored had trained me to stay silent.

Alexander noticed.

He always seemed to notice things others missed.

“Emma,” he said, looking at me.

“Is that true?””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because the answer felt dangerous.

My mother gave me a warning look.

One I knew too well.

But for the first time in years, I looked away from her.

“No,” I whispered.

The room went still.

“No, it’s not true.””

Olivia gasped.

Charlotte stared.

My mother’s face changed instantly.

“Emma.””

I continued before fear could stop me.

“I don’t help because I want to.””

My voice became stronger.

“I do it because nobody else will.””

Nobody spoke.

Alexander watched me carefully.

Not with pity.

With respect.

My mother stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous. She’s emotional.””

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“Interesting.””

“What is?””

“You introduced Olivia and Charlotte as your beautiful daughters.””

He looked at me.

“But you never introduced Emma.””

My mother had no answer.

The silence was unbearable.

Then Alexander reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Actually…”

Everyone waited.

He turned the phone toward himself.

“What?””

He read something.

Then his eyes moved directly to my mother.

“Victoria, I think you forgot to mention something.””

My mother looked nervous.

“What are you talking about?””

Alexander’s voice became colder.

“You told me you had two daughters.””

The room froze.

My mother said nothing.

He looked at me.

“Why did you hide the third?””
