Amused

Chapter 9: The Last Confession

I never thought I would see Claire afraid.

Not angry.

Not manipulative.

Not pretending.

Afraid.

She stood in my mother’s doorway, waiting for me to believe her.

And the worst part was…

I did.

Because fear was something Claire had never been good at pretending.

“Where did you get this?”” I asked.

She looked at the photograph.

“Michael’s office.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Why were you there?””

Claire lowered her eyes.

“Because I was trying to find evidence.””

I almost laughed.

“Evidence?””

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Against who?””

“Michael.””

The room became silent.

Claire took a breath.

“I thought he was helping me.””

That sentence explained everything.

She had been using him.

And he had been using her.

Claire told us everything.

Michael had approached her years earlier.

He knew she wanted wealth.

Status.

A powerful marriage.

He promised her a future.

All she had to do was marry me.

Keep me away from my mother.

Keep me loyal to my father.

She thought she was winning.

Until she realized she was just another piece on Michael’s board.

“He never planned to let me become part of the family,” she whispered.

My mother looked at her.

“You finally understand.””

Claire nodded.

“I was stupid.””

My mother said nothing.

Because sometimes consequences teach lessons better than anger.

We found Richard in an old warehouse outside the city.

The place where the company stored old records.

My father was there.

Bound to a chair.

Alive.

But broken.

When he saw me, his eyes filled with shame.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t move.

“You lied to me.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“No excuses?””

He closed his eyes.

“I have no excuses left.””

For the first time, I saw my father as a human being.

Not a monster.

Not a victim.

Just a man who had spent years choosing the wrong things.

“Why?””

I asked.

“Why did you let me hate my mother?””

His voice cracked.

“Because I was afraid.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You were afraid?””

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“Because I knew she was stronger than me.””

My mother stepped closer.

Richard looked at her.

“I loved you.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“You did.””

She answered quietly.

“But you loved power more.””

A long silence followed.

Then Richard whispered:

“Michael was always the dangerous one.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

He swallowed.

“He has been planning this since before you were born.””

The warehouse door suddenly slammed.

Everyone turned.

Michael stood there.

Holding a gun.

“Always so dramatic, Richard.””

My body froze.

Michael smiled.

“Family reunions are beautiful.””

My mother stepped in front of me.

“Enough.””

Michael laughed.

“You still think you can protect everyone.””

He looked at me.

“Daniel, do you know why I chose you?””

I said nothing.

“Because you were the perfect son.””

The words disgusted me.

“You obeyed.””

“You trusted.””

“You never questioned.””

He smiled.

“You were everything your father wasn’t.””

Richard looked at him.

“You promised you wouldn’t hurt him.””

Michael’s expression changed.

“You still think promises matter?””

The gun moved.

My mother grabbed my arm.

Then suddenly—

A loud sound filled the warehouse.

Not a gunshot.

A recording.

Michael’s own voice.

Everyone froze.

Because the recording was coming from Claire’s phone.

Michael’s voice echoed through the room.

“I’ll remove Richard, take control of the company, and Daniel will inherit nothing.””

Michael looked shocked.

Claire stepped forward.

“You should have checked your office.””

His face changed.

“You recorded me?””

She nodded.

“For the first time in my life, I chose the right side.””

Michael’s grip tightened.

But before he could react…

Police lights flashed outside.

May you like

And this time…

Michael had nowhere left to run.
