Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Lies
The party ended without anyone saying goodbye.
The guests left quietly.
No laughter.
No congratulations.
No champagne.
Just whispers.
By midnight, the beautiful garden looked abandoned.
The white flowers were still glowing under the lights, but everything else felt broken.
I sat inside the mansion with my mother across from me.
For the first time in twelve years.
I didn’t know what to say.
She looked older than I remembered.
Not weak.
Just tired.
“Why did you come tonight?”” I asked.
She touched the handbag beside her.
“Because I knew the truth was coming out eventually.””
“Why not before?””
Her eyes lowered.
“Because your father threatened to destroy everything I had left.””
I clenched my fists.
“He threatened you?””
She nodded.
“He told me if I contacted you again, he would make sure you hated me forever.””
The words hurt because they worked.
My mother watched me carefully.
“I’m not here to make you choose between us.””
I looked up.
“Then why?””
“Because I wanted you to know I never abandoned you.””
Silence.
That was the sentence I had waited years to hear.
Not from strangers.
Not from old records.
From her.
I looked away.
Claire walked into the room.
Her makeup was gone.
Her expensive dress was wrinkled.
For the first time, she looked like a normal person.
“Daniel.””
I didn’t answer.
She came closer.
“Please.””
My mother stood.
“No.””
Claire looked at her.
“You ruined everything.””
My mother smiled.
“No. I revealed everything.””
Claire’s eyes filled with anger.
“You think you’re better than me because you showed up dressed like this?””
She pointed at my mother’s traditional clothes.
The insult was deliberate.
My mother looked down at herself.
Then back at Claire.
“I came wearing the clothes my mother made for me.””
She paused.
“They are worth more than everything you wear.””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“That’s exactly why you lost.””
I stared at her.
“What did you say?””
Claire realized too late.
She had revealed too much.
My mother noticed.
“You never cared about love.””
Claire looked at me.
“I loved Daniel.””
“No,” my mother said.
“You loved what Daniel represented.””
Claire’s face turned cold.
The mask finally fell.
“You want the truth?””
She looked at me.
“Fine.””
My heart sank.
“I was never going to marry you because of your personality.””
The words cut.
“I was going to marry you because you were the only thing your father couldn’t control.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She laughed.
“Your father built everything around money. Power. Reputation. But you?””
She stepped closer.
“You were his weakness.””
My mother’s face changed.
Claire continued.
“And once I became your wife, I would control everything.””
I felt nothing.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Just emptiness.
“So all of this…”
I looked around the mansion.
“The engagement.””
“The love.””
“The future.””
“It was a plan?””
Claire didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
My mother picked up the handbag.
“There is one more thing.””
She removed a small key.
Claire’s expression changed instantly.
“What is that?””
My mother looked at her.
“The reason you were so desperate to keep me away.””
She placed the key on the table.
“This opens a safety deposit box.””
Claire went pale.
“What’s inside?””
My mother smiled.
“The evidence your father thought he destroyed.””
Before anyone could move, the front door opened.
A man stood there.
Blood on his shirt.
Everyone froze.
It was my father.
Richard.
But he looked nothing like the powerful businessman from the newspapers.
He looked afraid.
His eyes went straight to my mother.
“You shouldn’t have opened the bag.””
My mother stared at him.
“You shouldn’t have lied to our son.””
Richard took a step forward.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I looked at him.
The man who shaped my entire life.
The man who took my mother away.
“What else did you lie about?””
He opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
Because my mother pulled out one final item from the handbag.
A recording device.
And a voice came from it.
Richard’s voice.
Clear.
Cold.
May you like
Saying words that made everyone in the room freeze.
“I’ll make sure Daniel never sees his mother again.””
