Chapter 8: The Truth Beneath The House
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
My mother stood in my son's nursery as if she belonged there.
As if she had every right to be there.
As if twelve years of secrets and lies had not destroyed our family.
She held Elijah carefully.
Too carefully.
That was what frightened me most.
She wasn't acting like someone who wanted to hurt him.
She was acting like someone who believed she owned him.
"Give him to me.""
My voice shook.
Margaret Carter looked at me with the same gentle expression she had worn my entire life.
The expression that had convinced everyone she was kind.
"Naomi, you don't understand what you have.""
I stepped forward.
"He's my son.""
"Of course he is.""
Her words were calm.
Almost comforting.
But there was something underneath.
Something cold.
"And he is also something much bigger.""
I felt sick.
"No.""
My mother sighed.
"You're still emotional.""
"Emotional?""
I stared at her.
"You came into my house. You hid cameras. You allowed someone to hurt my baby.""
Her expression barely changed.
"Nobody was supposed to hurt him.""
I froze.
"What does that mean?""
She looked toward the hallway.
"Where is Daniel?""
My eyes narrowed.
"Don't change the subject.""
She smiled faintly.
"You're just like your father.""
The words hit harder than they should have.
I hated that.
Because even after everything, some part of me still wanted my mother to be my mother.
Not a stranger.
Not the person behind a nightmare.
"Where is Daniel?"" she asked again.
I looked back.
He wasn't behind me.
My heart dropped.
"Daniel?""
No answer.
A horrible thought entered my mind.
But before I could follow it, my mother spoke.
"He always was weak.""
I turned toward her.
"What did you do?""
She looked surprised.
"Me?""
"Where is my husband?""
"Your husband made his own choices.""
My hands curled into fists.
"What choices?""
She looked at Elijah.
"Bad ones.""
I moved closer.
"Put him down.""
My mother shook her head.
"Naomi.""
Her voice softened.
"I know you think I am the villain.""
"You are.""
The words came out immediately.
For the first time, her face changed.
A tiny crack.
A flicker of hurt.
Then it disappeared.
"You have no idea what I sacrificed.""
I laughed.
A painful sound.
"You sacrificed my childhood?""
"No.""
"You sacrificed Rachel?""
Her eyes hardened.
"You don't know what happened with Rachel.""
"I know enough.""
"Do you?""
She stepped toward me.
"Do you know your sister was willing to destroy everything because of her emotions?""
I stared at her.
"She wanted to expose you.""
"She wanted revenge.""
"She wanted the truth.""
My mother looked away.
"Truth is a luxury people ask for when they don't understand consequences.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"You really believe this.""
"Yes.""
She said it without hesitation.
And that terrified me.
She genuinely believed she was right.
"You created a program.""
"A medical advancement.""
"You chose children's futures.""
"We gave children opportunities.""
"You treated them like experiments.""
"No.""
Her voice sharpened.
"We protected them from being born into failure.""
The room went silent.
I felt a chill.
"Failure?""
My mother looked at Elijah.
"Look at him.""
I stepped forward.
"Don't.""
"He is healthy. Intelligent. Strong.""
"He is a baby.""
"He is the result of years of work.""
My stomach turned.
"He is not your achievement.""
She looked at me.
"He is ours.""
"No.""
I grabbed Elijah from her arms.
For one second, she resisted.
Just one second.
But that was enough.
My heart stopped.
My mother had resisted giving me my own child.
I pulled him against my chest.
"Never touch him again.""
She stared at me.
Then whispered:
"You really don't know.""
"Know what?""
"How he was created.""
I froze.
"What are you saying?""
Before she could answer, the nursery window shattered.
Glass exploded across the floor.
My mother immediately grabbed my arm.
"Down!""
The command shocked me.
But I reacted.
I dropped behind the crib with Elijah in my arms.
A second later, another sound.
Not glass.
A car door.
Someone outside.
My mother looked toward the window.
Her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"They found us.""
I stared at her.
"Who?""
She didn't answer.
Then the lights went out.
Again.
The entire house disappeared into darkness.
I held Elijah tighter.
My mother whispered:
"We need to leave.""
I almost laughed.
"You think I'm leaving with you?""
She looked at me.
"Naomi.""
For the first time, she sounded desperate.
"If they get him, you will never see him again.""
"Who are they?""
Before she could answer, footsteps echoed downstairs.
Slow.
Heavy.
Someone was inside.
My mother looked toward the door.
"Take him.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"Take Elijah and run.""
The contradiction was impossible.
Five minutes ago, she was claiming ownership.
Now she was telling me to escape.
"Why should I trust you?""
She looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw my mother without the mask.
Not the powerful woman.
Not the person behind the foundation.
Just a mother.
Terrified.
"Because they were never my people.""
I froze.
"What?""
She whispered:
"I thought I could control them.""
A noise came from the hallway.
Closer.
My mother continued:
"I was wrong.""
The nursery door moved.
Someone was opening it.
My mother grabbed a hidden panel beside the bookshelf.
A small door opened in the wall.
I stared.
"There are secret passages in this house?""
She didn't look at me.
"Your father built them.""
Of course he did.
The footsteps got closer.
My mother looked at Elijah.
Then at me.
"Go.""
I didn't move.
"Why?""
Her eyes filled slightly.
A tiny crack in the woman who had seemed impossible to break.
"Because I failed you once.""
The door handle turned.
"Don't make me fail you again.""
The door opened.
A man stepped inside.
I didn't recognize him.
Tall.
Dark coat.
Cold expression.
His eyes immediately found Elijah.
"There he is.""
My mother stepped between us.
"No.""
The man's face remained emotionless.
"Margaret.""
His voice was calm.
"Move.""
"No.""
I had never heard my mother speak that way.
Not afraid.
Not apologetic.
Defiant.
The man sighed.
"You knew this day would come.""
"I know.""
"Then you know what happens next.""
My mother looked at me.
"Run.""
I grabbed Elijah and moved toward the hidden passage.
The man noticed.
He reached for me.
But my mother pushed him back.
"Naomi!""
I climbed into the narrow passage.
Behind me, I heard shouting.
A struggle.
My mother screaming.
The door closed.
Darkness surrounded me.
I crawled forward, holding Elijah against my chest.
My phone had no signal.
The passage smelled like dust and old wood.
Then my hand touched something.
A metal box.
Hidden inside the wall.
I pulled it out.
Inside were files.
Hundreds of pages.
At the top was a familiar name.
*Carter Foundation.*
But underneath it was something I had never seen before.
A different title.
*Project Second Generation.*
I opened the first page.
And my blood froze.
The file wasn't about Elijah.
It wasn't about me.
It was about another child.
A child born years before Elijah.
A child listed as:
*Subject One.*
Then I saw the name.
And my entire world stopped.
Because Subject One was not a stranger.
It was Rachel.
A final note was attached.
Written by my father.
*The first attempt failed. The second attempt succeeded. But Naomi must never know the third child exists.*
I stared at the words.
Third child.
My hands began shaking.
Because if Rachel was the first...
And Elijah was the second...
Then who was the third?
A sound came from behind me.
Someone was crawling through the passage.
Coming closer.
I turned off my phone light.
Held Elijah tighter.
And heard a familiar voice whisper in the darkness:
"Naomi...""
My blood went cold.
Because it wasn't my mother.
It wasn't Daniel.
It wasn't Rachel.
It was someone I had buried years ago.
May you like
My father's voice.
"Don't let them find my third child.""
