Amused

Chapter 5: The File That Changed Everything

I read the words again.

Then again.

Because my mind refused to accept them.

*Candidate: Elijah Carter.*

*Biological parents: Naomi Carter and Daniel Carter.*

*Status: Approved.*

The paper shook between my fingers.

"Approved?""

My voice sounded strange.

Almost like it belonged to someone else.

"Approved for what?""

Daniel didn't answer.

He just stared at the document like it had reached out from the past and grabbed him by the throat.

"Daniel.""

Nothing.

I stepped closer.

"What was my son approved for?""

His eyes finally lifted.

And the answer was written all over his face before he ever spoke.

"You weren't supposed to find this.""

My chest tightened.

"You knew.""

He looked away.

"You knew about this.""

"Naomi—"

"You knew.""

My voice cracked.

The anger came faster than the fear.

"You knew my father had files about our child before Elijah was even born?""

"Listen to me.""

"No.""

I pushed the document against his chest.

"No more listening. No more excuses. No more telling me I don't understand.""

Daniel caught the papers.

His expression broke.

"I was trying to protect you.""

The words made me laugh.

A painful, empty laugh.

"Protect me?""

I pointed toward the nursery.

"My son was being hurt by a woman we trusted.""

I pointed at the papers.

"My entire life might have been planned by people who treated my child like an experiment.""

I looked back at him.

"And you think hiding the truth was protecting me?""

Daniel had no answer.

That hurt more.

I walked away from him and picked up the box from the floor.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Medical records.

Financial statements.

Private letters.

Every page felt heavier than the last.

Then I saw a familiar name.

Dr. Samuel Carter.

My father.

I opened the letter.

The paper was old.

Yellowed around the edges.

But his handwriting was unmistakable.

*Daniel,*

*The child must remain unaware of the circumstances surrounding his birth. Naomi's emotional attachment cannot interfere with the process.*

My hands went cold.

I stopped reading.

"What process?""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Naomi.""

"What process, Daniel?""

He moved toward me.

I stepped back.

"Don't.""

The word came out quietly.

But he stopped.

"Tell me.""

He looked like he was fighting with himself.

Then he whispered:

"Your father believed some children carried the future of certain families.""

I stared at him.

"That doesn't even make sense.""

"He believed genetics mattered.""

"Everyone knows genetics matter.""

"Not like this.""

Daniel looked toward Elijah.

"He believed he could predict success.""

A sick feeling spread through me.

"Success?""

"Intelligence. Health. Personality traits.""

My stomach turned.

"You mean he was choosing children.""

Daniel didn't answer.

"Say it.""

His voice dropped.

"Yes.""

The room felt freezing.

"My father was choosing children?""

"Not exactly.""

"Then what exactly?""

"He was influencing who would have them.""

I stepped back.

"Influencing?""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"The foundation started with fertility assistance. Then it became something else.""

"What?""

He looked at the papers.

"Control.""

The word hung there.

I thought about my father.

The man who taught me how to ride a bicycle.

The man who carried me on his shoulders.

The man who told me family was the most important thing in the world.

And now I was staring at proof that he had been deciding the lives of strangers.

Including mine.

"Why me?""

Daniel looked up.

"What?""

"Why was I involved?""

His silence was immediate.

Too immediate.

I already knew.

"Daniel.""

He swallowed.

"Because your father chose you.""

My heart stopped.

"No.""

"Naomi—"

"No.""

I shook my head.

"My father didn't choose my life.""

Daniel looked away.

"Naomi.""

I stepped closer.

"Did he choose you too?""

Daniel didn't answer.

That was all I needed.

"You were part of this.""

"I was young.""

The words came quickly.

Defensively.

"I was twenty-three.""

"So?""

"So I didn't understand what I was involved in.""

"Then why are you in these files?""

Daniel looked at the floor.

"I worked for your father.""

I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

Not because he worked for my father.

Because he had never told me.

"You never mentioned that.""

"I knew how you felt about him.""

"That isn't an answer.""

Daniel rubbed his hands over his face.

"I met Rachel because of those files.""

My entire body froze.

"What?""

"She found me looking through records.""

"When?""

"Before she disappeared.""

The room became silent.

"Why were you looking through them?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Because I started realizing what your father was doing.""

"And Rachel?""

"She knew more than I did.""

I thought about the message.

The caller.

Her warning.

The person you married made sure I couldn't come home.

My heart sank.

"What did you do to her?""

Daniel looked at me.

Pain flashed across his face.

"I didn't hurt Rachel.""

"Then what happened?""

He looked at the floor.

"I tried to help her escape.""

"Escape from who?""

He didn't answer.

"Who was after her?""

Daniel opened his mouth.

Before he could speak, the lights went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

My breath caught.

A second later, Elijah started crying upstairs.

I ran.

I didn't think.

I didn't wait.

I just ran.

"Elijah!""

Daniel followed behind me.

The hallway was black except for the faint light from my phone.

The nursery door was open.

Again.

My stomach dropped.

I rushed inside.

The crib was empty.

For one horrible second, the world stopped.

Then I heard him.

A small cry.

Not from the crib.

From the closet.

I spun around.

The closet door was slightly open.

Daniel moved in front of me.

"Stay back.""

But I pushed past him.

Inside the closet, behind a row of blankets, was Elijah.

He was lying safely inside a hidden compartment.

A space I had never seen before.

Someone had placed him there.

Carefully.

Not to hurt him.

To hide him.

I grabbed him immediately.

"Oh my God.""

He was crying, but he was alive.

Safe.

Daniel stared at the hidden compartment.

"What is this?""

I looked at him.

"You tell me.""

He didn't answer.

Then something caught my attention.

A small camera.

Mounted inside the closet.

Recording.

My blood ran cold.

Someone had been watching the nursery.

Watching Elijah.

Watching me.

Daniel noticed it too.

His face changed.

"That's impossible.""

"Why?""

"Because this room was inspected before he was born.""

"By who?""

Daniel didn't answer.

I held Elijah tighter.

"By who?""

Then the camera light turned on.

A tiny red dot appeared.

Someone was watching us live.

Daniel grabbed his phone.

"I need to call someone.""

"Who?""

He hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

"Daniel.""

He looked at me.

"Who are you calling?""

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face went pale.

I didn't need to ask who it was.

I already knew.

Rachel.

He answered slowly.

"Hello?""

A few seconds passed.

Then his expression changed.

Fear.

Shock.

Regret.

He put the phone on speaker.

Rachel's voice filled the room.

"Daniel, did she find the file?""

Neither of us spoke.

Rachel continued.

"She did, didn't she?""

I stared at Daniel.

Then at the phone.

"Rachel.""

The line went quiet.

"Naomi?""

"Tell me the truth.""

A long pause.

Then my sister whispered:

"I was trying to stop them before Elijah was born.""

My grip tightened around my son.

"Who are they?""

Rachel's voice trembled.

"The people who created that program.""

"And my father?""

Another pause.

"He wasn't the person in charge.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Then who was?""

Rachel took a shaky breath.

And the next words changed everything.

"Naomi...""

May you like

"The person who approved Elijah's file...""

"Was your mother.""
